We derive a hydrodynamic model for a liquid of arbitrarily curved flux-lines and vortex loops using the mapping of the vortex liquid onto a liquid of relativistic charged quantum bosons in 2+1 dimensions recently suggested by Tesanovic and by Sudbo and collaborators. The loops in the flux-line system correspond to particle-antiparticle fluctuations in the bosons. We explicitly incorporate the externally applied magnetic field which in the boson model corresponds to a chemical potential associated with the conserved charge density of the bosons. We propose this model as a convenient and physically appealing starting point for studying the properties of the vortex liquid.

The statistical mechanics of the flux-line lattice in extreme type-II super- conductors is studied within the framework of the uniformly frustrated anisotropic 3D XY-model. A finite-field counterpart of an Onsager vortex-loop transition in extreme ty pe-II superconductors renders the vortex liquid phase- incoherent when the Abrikosov vortex lattice undergoes a first order melting transition. For the filling fractions considered in this paper $f$ given by $1/f=12,14,16,20,25,32,48,64,72,84,96,112$, and 128, the vortex liquid phase is not describable as a liquid of well-defined field induced vortex lines. This is due to the proliferation of thermally induced closed vortex-loops with dia- meters of order the magnetic length in the problem, resulting in a percolation transition driven by non-field induced vortices also transverse to the direc- tion of the applied magnetic field. This immediately triggers flux-line lattice melting and loss of phase-coherence in all direction. In a non-relativistic 2D boson-analogy picture, this latter feature would correspond to a vanishing mass of the bosons. Scaling functions for the specific heat are calculated in zero and finite magnetic field. From this we conclude that the critical region is of order 10% of $T_c$ for a mass anisotropy $sqrt{M_z/M}=3$, and increases with increasing mass anisotropy. The entropy jump at the melting transition is cal- culated as a function of magnetic field for a mass-ansitropy slightly lower than that in $YBCO$, and found to be $Delta S=0.1k_B$ per vortex panncake, independent of the magnetic field for the filling fractions considered here. This is slightly lower than experimental values of $Delta S approx 0.4k_B$ found experimentally for $YBCO$. We attribute this to the slightly lower mass anisotropy used in our simulations.
We report on dynamics of non-local Abrikosov vortex flow in mesoscopic superconducting Nb channels. Magnetic field dependence of the non-local voltage induced by the flux flow shows that vortices form ordered vortex chains. Voltage asymmetry (rectifi cation) with respect to the direction of vortex flow is evidence that vortex jamming strongly moderates vortex dynamics in mesoscopic geometries. The findings can be applied to superconducting devices exploiting vortex dynamics and vortex manipulation, including superconducting wires with engineered pinning centers.

Using dynamical computer simulation we have investigated vortex matters in glass states. A genuine continuous depinning transition is observed at zero temperature, which also governs the low-temperature creep motion. With the notion of scaling, we ev aluate in high accuracy critical exponents and scaling functions; we observe a non-Arrhenius creep motion for weak collective pinning where Bragg glass (BrG) is stabilized at equilibrium, while for strong pinning the well-known Arrhenius law is recovered. In both cases, a sharp crossover takes place between depinning and creep at low temperatures. The possible relation between the present results and a recent experimental observation of a second-order like phase boundary inside the BrG phase is discussed.
Demanding microwave applications in a magnetic field require the material optimization not only in zero-field but, more important, in the in-field flux motion dominated regime. However, the effect of artificial pinning centers (APC) remains unclear a t high frequency. Moreover, in coated conductors the evaluation of the high frequency material properties is difficult due to the complicated electromagnetic problem of a thin superconducting film on a buffered metal substrate. In this paper we present an experimental study at 48 GHz of 150-200 nm YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ coated conductors, with and without APCs, on buffered Ni-5at%W tapes. By properly addressing the electromagnetic problem of the extraction of the superconductor parameters from the measured overall surface impedance $Z$, we are able to extract and to comment on the London penetration depth, the flux flow resistivity and the pinning constant, highlighting the effect of artificial pinning centers in these samples.

We obtain hydrodynamic equations describing a fluid consisting of chiral molecules or a suspension of chiral particles in a Newtonian fluid. The stresses arising in a flowing chiral liquid have a component forbidden by symmetry in a Newtonian liquid. For example, a chiral liquid in a Poiseuille flow between parallel plates exerts forces on the plates, which are perpendicular to the flow. A generic flow results in spatial separation of particles of different chirality. Thus even a racemic suspension will exhibit chiral properties in a generic flow. A suspension of particles of random shape in a Newtonian liquid is described by equations which are similar to those describing a racemic mixture of chiral particles in a liquid.
