First-order phase transitions that proceed via nucleation of bubbles are described by the homogeneous nucleation theory of Langer. The nucleation rate is one of the most interesting parameters of these transitions. In previous works we have computed nucleation rates with two different methods: (A) employing coarse-grained potentials; (B) by means of a saddle-point approximation, using dimensionally regularized field theory. In this article we compare the results of the two approaches in order to test their reliability and to determine the regions of applicability. We find a very good agreement.

In the long-time pursuit of the solution to calculate the partition function (or free energy) of condensed matter, Monte-Carlo-based nested sampling should be the state-of-the-art method, and very recently, we established a direct integral approach t hat works at least four orders faster. In present work, the above two methods were applied to solid argon at temperatures up to $300$K, and the derived internal energy and pressure were compared with the molecular dynamics simulation as well as experimental measurements, showing that the calculation precision of our approach is about 10 times higher than that of the nested sampling method.
We have developed a method to determine the transient surface density and transient rate for any given survey, using Monte-Carlo simulations. This method allows us to determine the transient rate as a function of both the flux and the duration of the transients in the whole flux-duration plane rather than one or a few points as currently available methods do. It is applicable to every survey strategy that is monitoring the same part of the sky, regardless the instrument or wavelength of the survey, or the target sources. We have simulated both top-hat and Fast Rise Exponential Decay light curves, highlighting how the shape of the light curve might affect the detectability of transients. Another application for this method is to estimate the number of transients of a given kind that are expected to be detected by a survey, provided that their rate is known.
In this paper we describe RooFitUnfold, an extension of the RooFit statistical software package to treat unfolding problems, and which includes most of the unfolding methods that commonly used in particle physics. The package provides a common interf ace to these algorithms as well as common uniform methods to evaluate their performance in terms of bias, variance and coverage. In this paper we exploit this common interface of RooFitUnfold to compare the performance of unfolding with the Richardson-Lucy, Iterative Dynamically Stabilized, Tikhonov, Gaussian Process, Bin-by-bin and inversion methods on several example problems.

The electronic structure of interfaces between lattice-mismatched semiconductor is sensitive to the strain. We compare two approaches for calculating such inhomogeneous strain -- continuum elasticity (CE, treated as a finite difference problem) and a tomistic elasticity (AE). While for small strain the two methods must agree, for the large strains that exist between lattice-mismatched III-V semiconductors (e.g. 7% for InAs/GaAs outside the linearity regime of CE) there are discrepancies. We compare the strain profile obtained by both approaches (including the approximation of the correct C_2 symmetry by the C_4 symmetry in the CE method), when applied to C_2-symmetric InAs pyramidal dots capped by GaAs.
Cross sections from low-energy neutron-nucleus scattering have been evaluated using a coupled channel theory of scattering. Both a coordinate-space and a momentum-space formalism of that coupled-channel theory are considered.A simple rotational model of the channel interaction potentials is used to find results using two relevant codes, ECIS97 and MCAS, so that they may be compared. The very same model is then used in the MCAS approach to quantify the changes that occur when allowance is made for effects of the Pauli principle.
