This paper presents the detailed results obtained in the search of density- velocity inhomogeneities in a volume limited and absolute magnitude limited sample of A-F type dwarfs within 125 parsecs of the Sun. A 3-D wavelet analysis is used to extract inhomogeneities, both in the density and velocity distributions. Having established a real picture of the phase space without assumption we come back to previously known observational facts regarding clusters and associations, superclusters. In the 3-D position space, well known open clusters (Hyades, Coma Berenices and Ursa Major), associations (parts of the Scorpio-Centaurus association) as well as the Hyades evaporation track are retrieved. Three new probably loose clusters are identified (Bootes, Pegasus 1 and 2). The sample is relatively well mixed in the position space since less than 7 per cent of the stars belong to structures with coherent kinematics, most likely gravitationally bound. In the velocity space, the majority of large scale velocity structures ($sigma$ ~ 6.3 $km s-1$) are Eggens superclusters (Pleiades SCl, Hyades SCl and Sirius SCl) with the whole Centaurus association. A new supercluster-like structure is found with a mean velocity between the Sun and Sirius SCl velocities. These structures are all characterized by a large age range which reflects the overall sample age distribution. Moreover, a few old streams of ~ 2 Gyr are also extracted at this scale with high U components. We show that all these large velocity dispersion structures represent 46% of the sample. Smaller scales (sigma ~ 3.8 and 2.4 $km s-1$) reveal that superclusters are always substructured by 2 or more streams which generally exhibit a coherent age distribution. Percentages of stars in these streams are 38% and 18% respectively.

A volume limited and absolute magnitude limited sample of A-F type dwarfs within 125 parsecs of the Sun is searched for inhomogeneities in the density- velocity space, expecting signatures of the cluster evaporation, phase mixing and possible disc he ating mechanisms. A 3-D wavelet analysis is used to extract inhomogeneities, both in the density and velocity distributions. Thus, a real picture of the phase space is produced. Not only are some clusters and streams detected, but the fraction of clumped stars can be measured. By estimating individual stellar ages one can relate the streams and clusters to the state of the interstellar medium at star formation time and provide a quantitative view of cluster evaporation and stream mixing. As a result, we propose a coherent interpretation of superclusters and derive some quantitative evolutionary tracers which we expect to serve in the understanding of the large scale evolution of the galactic disc. The sample is relatively well mixed in the position space since less than 7 per cent of the stars are proper motion confirmed cluster members. We also detect star evaporation out of the Hyades open cluster. In the velocity space, the typical scale of so-called Eggens superclusters ($sigma 6.3 km/s$) does not seem to correspond to any physical entity. The picture they form, their frequency and their divisions at smaller scales are well compatible with their creation by chance coincidence of physically homogeneous smaller scale structures ($sigma 3.8 or 2.4 km/s$). The detailed analysis of the phase space structures provides a scenario of kinematical evolution in the solar neighbourhood.

Hipparcos data provide the first, volume limited and absolute magnitude limited homogeneous tracer of stellar density and velocity distributions in the solar neighbourhood. The density of A-type stars more luminous than $M_v=2.5$ can be accurately ma pped within a sphere of 125 pc radius, while proper motions in galactic latitude provide the vertical velocity distribution near the galactic plane. The potential well across the galactic plane is traced practically hypothesis-free and model-free. The local dynamical density comes out as $rho_{0}=0.076 pm0.015~M_{sun}~{pc}^{-3}$ a value well below all previous determinations leaving no room for any disk shaped component of dark matter.
The Kepler spacecraft is providing photometric time series with micro-magnitude precision for thousands of variable stars. The continuous time-series of unprecedented time span open up opportunities to study the pulsational variability in much more d etail than was previously possible from the ground. We present a first general characterization of the variability of A-F type stars as observed in the Kepler light curves of a sample of 750 candidate A-F type stars, and investigate the relation between gamma Doradus, delta Scuti, and hybrid stars. Our results imply an investigation of pulsation mechanisms to supplement the kappa mechanism and convective blocking effect to drive hybrid pulsations and suggest a revision of the current observational instability strips of delta Scuti and gamma Doradus stars if the currently available values of effective temperature and surface gravity will be confirmed.

We have analyzed the phase space distribution of a sample of about 900 non--kinematically selected low metallicity stars in the solar vicinity. The stars primarily represent the thick disk and halo populations of the Milky Way. We aim to identify ove rdensely populated regions in phase space, which we interpret as signatures of star streams passing close to the Sun. The search was conducted in a space constructed from the angular momenta and eccentricities of the stellar orbits. Besides recovering all well known star streams in the thick disk, we isolated four statistically significant phase space overdensities amongst halo stars. One of them is associated with a previously known halo star stream, but three of them are novel features, which we propose be also considered as genuine halo streams.
The Kepler spacecraft is providing time series of photometric data with micromagnitude precision for hundreds of A-F type stars. We present a first general characterization of the pulsational behaviour of A-F type stars as observed in the Kepler ligh t curves of a sample of 750 candidate A-F type stars. We propose three main groups to describe the observed variety in pulsating A-F type stars: gamma Dor, delta Sct, and hybrid stars. We assign 63% of our sample to one of the three groups, and identify the remaining part as rotationally modulated/active stars, binaries, stars of different spectral type, or stars that show no clear periodic variability. 23% of the stars (171 stars) are hybrid stars, which is a much larger fraction than what has been observed before. We characterize for the first time a large number of A-F type stars (475 stars) in terms of number of detected frequencies, frequency range, and typical pulsation amplitudes. The majority of hybrid stars show frequencies with all kinds of periodicities within the gamma Dor and delta Sct range, also between 5 and 10 c/d, which is a challenge for the current models. We find indications for the existence of delta Sct and gamma Dor stars beyond the edges of the current observational instability strips. The hybrid stars occupy the entire region within the delta Sct and gamma Dor instability strips, and beyond. Non-variable stars seem to exist within the instability strips. The location of gamma Dor and delta Sct classes in the (Teff,logg)-diagram has been extended. We investigate two newly constructed variables efficiency and energy as a means to explore the relation between gamma Dor and delta Sct stars. Our results suggest a revision of the current observational instability strips, and imply an investigation of other pulsation mechanisms to supplement the kappa mechanism and convective blocking effect to drive hybrid pulsations.
