We present results of spectral analysis of Ginga data obtained during the decline phase after the 1989 outburst of GS 2023+338 (V404 Cyg). Our analysis includes detailed modelling of the effects of X-ray reflection/reprocessing. We have found that (1) the contribution of the reprocessed component (both continuum and line) corresponds to the solid angle of the reprocessor as seen from the X-ray source of Omega approx (0.4-0.5) 2pi, (2) the reprocessed component (both line and continuum) is broadened (``smeared) by kinematic and relativistic effects, as expected from the accretion disk reflection. We discuss the constraints these results give on various possible system geometries.

We present optical multi-colour photometry of V404 Cyg during the outburst from December, 2015 to January, 2016 together with the simultaneous X-ray data. This outburst occurred less than 6 months after the previous outburst in June-July, 2015. These two outbursts in 2015 were of a slow rise and rapid decay-type and showed large-amplitude ($sim$2 mag) and short-term ($sim$10 min-3 hours) optical variations even at low luminosity (0.01-0.1$L_{rm Edd}$). We found correlated optical and X-ray variations in two $sim$1 hour time intervals and performed Bayesian time delay estimations between them. In the previous version, the observation times of X-ray light curves were measured at the satellite and their system of times was Terrestrial Time (TT), while those of optical light curves were measured at the Earth and their system of times was Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). In this version, we have corrected the observation times and obtained a Bayesian estimate of an optical delay against the X-ray emission, which is $sim$30 s, during those two intervals. In addition, the relationship between the optical and X-ray luminosity was $L_{rm opt} propto L_{rm X}^{0.25-0.29}$ at that time. These features can be naturally explained by disc reprocessing.

Iron emission lines at 6.4-6.97 keV, identified with fluorescent Kalpha transitions, are among the strongest discrete features in the X-ray band. These are therefore one of the most powerful probes to infer the properties of the plasma in the innermo st part of the accretion disc around a compact object. In this paper we present a recent XMM observation of the X-ray burster 4U 1705-44, where we clearly detect a relativistically smeared iron line at about 6.7 keV, testifying with high statistical significance that the line profile is distorted by high velocity motion in the accretion disc. As expected from disc reflection models, we also find a significant absorption edge at about 8.3 keV; this feature appears to be smeared, and is compatible with being produced in the same region where the iron line is produced. From the line profile we derive the physical parameters of the inner accretion disc with large precision. The line is identified with the Kalpha transition of highly ionised iron, Fe XXV, the inner disc radius is Rin = (14 pm 2) R_g (where R_g is the Gravitational radius, GM/c^2), the emissivity dependence from the disc radius is r^{-2.27 pm 0.08}, the inclination angle with respect to the line of sight is i = (39 pm 1) degrees. Finally, the XMM spectrum shows evidences of other low-energy emission lines, which again appear broad and their profiles are compatible with being produced in the same region where the iron line is produced.
The X-ray energy spectra and Normalized Power Spectral Densities (NPSDs) of an X-ray nova, GS 2000+25, were investigated. The X-ray energy spectra of the source consist of two components: a hard component, which can be represented by a power-law, and an ultra-soft component, represented by radiation from an optically-thick accretion disk (the disk component). In a model in which the power-law component is the Compton-scattered radiation, it is found that the temperature of the incident blackbody radiation to the Compton cloud decrease from 0.8 keV to 0.2 keV according to the decay of the intensity, which coincides with that of the inner accretion disk. When the source changed from the high-state to the low-state, both the photon index of the power-law component (or Compton y-parameter) and the NPSD of the hard component dramatically changed as did GS 1124-683. That is, the photon index changed from 2.2--2.6 to 1.7--1.8 and the absolute values of the NPSDs at 0.3 Hz of the hard component in the low-state became about 10-times larger than those of the hard component in the high-state. These X-ray properties were similar to those of other black-hole candidates, such as Cyg X-1, GX 339-4, and LMC X-3.

We report results from the first simultaneous X-ray (RXTE) and optical (SAAO) observations of the low-mass X-ray binary GS 1826-24 in June 1998. A type-I burst was detected in both X-ray and optical wavelengths. Its energy-dependent profile, energeti cs and spectral evolution provide evidence for an increase in the X-ray but not fpr photospheric radius expansion. However, we may still derive an upper limit for its distance of $7.5pm0.5$ kpc, assuming a peak flux of 2.8times 10^{-8} erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. A ~3 s optical delay with respect to the X-ray burst is also observed and we infer that this is related to the X-ray reprocessing in the accretion disk into the optical. This provides support for the recently proposed orbital period of ~2 h. We also present an ASCA observation from March 1998, during which two X-ray bursts were detected.

In recent years there have been many reported detections of highly redshifted or blueshifted narrow spectral lines (both emission or absorption) in the X-ray spectra of active galaxies, but these are all modest detections in terms of their statistica l significance. The aim of this paper is to review the issue of the significance of these detections and, in particular, take account of publication bias. A literature search revealed 38 reported detections of narrow, strongly shifted (v/c >= 0.05) X-ray lines in the 1.5-20 keV spectra of Seyfert galaxies and quasars. These published data show a close, linear relationship between the estimated line strength and its uncertainty, in the sense that better observations (with smaller uncertainties) only ever show the smallest lines. This result is consistent with many of the reported lines being false detections resulting from random fluctuations, drawn from a large body of data and filtered by publication bias such that only the most `significant fluctuations are ever reported. The reality of many of these features, and certainly their prevalence in the population at large, therefore remains an open question that is best settled though uniform analysis (and reporting) of higher quality observations.
