We discovered non-stellar Balmer absorption lines in two many-narrow-trough FeLoBALs (mntBALs) by the near-infrared spectroscopy with Subaru/CISCO. Presence of the non-stellar Balmer absorption lines is known to date only in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151, thus our discovery is the first cases for quasars. Since all known active galactic nuclei with Balmer absorption lines share characteristics, it is suggested that there is a population of BAL quasars which have unique structures at their nuclei or unique evolutionary phase.

We report the discovery of non-stellar hydrogen Balmer and metastable helium absorption lines accompanying a transient, high-velocity (0.05$c$) broad absorption line (BAL) system in the optical spectra of the tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2018zr ($z =0.071$). In the HST UV spectra, absorption of high- and low-ionization lines are also present at this velocity, making AT2018zr resemble a low-ionization broad absorption line (LoBAL) QSO. We conclude that these transient absorption features are more likely to arise in fast outflows produced by the TDE than absorbed by the unbound debris. In accordance with the outflow picture, we are able to reproduce the flat-topped H$alpha$ emission in a spherically expanding medium, without invoking the typical prescription of an elliptical disk. We also report the appearance of narrow ($sim$1000~km~s$^{-1}$) NIII$lambda$4640, HeII$lambda4686$, H$alpha$, and H$beta$, emission in the late-time optical spectra of AT2018zr, which may be a result of UV continuum hardening at late time as observed by Swift. Including AT2018zr, we find a high association rate (3 out of 4) of BALs in the UV spectra of TDEs. This suggests that outflows may be ubiquitous among TDEs and may be less sensitive to viewing angle effects compared to QSO outflows.

I present the discovery of Balmer-line absorption from H alpha to H9 in iron low-ionizaton broad absorption line (FeLoBAL) quasar, SDSS~J172341.10+555340.5 by near-infrared spectroscopy with the Cooled Infrared Spectrograph and Camera for OHS (CISCO) attached to the Subaru telescope. The redshift of the Balmer-line absorption troughs is 2.0530 +/- 0.0003, and it is blueshifted by 5370 km s^{-1} from the Balmer emission lines. It is more than $4000$ km s^{-1} blueshifted from the previously known UV absorption lines. I detect relatively strong (EW_rest=20A) [O III] emission lines which are similar to those found in other broad absorption line quasars with Balmer-line absorption. I derived a column density of neutral hydrogen of 5.2x10^{17} cm^{-2} by using the curve of growth and taking account of Ly alpha trapping. I searched for UV absorption lines which have the same redshift with Balmer-line absorption. I found Al II} and Fe III absorption lines at z=2.053 which correspond to previously unidentified absorption lines, and the presence of other blended troughs that were difficult to identify.

An analysis of H alpha and H beta spectra in a sample of 30 cool dwarf and subgiant stars is presented using MARCS model atmospheres based on the most recent calculations of the line opacities. A detailed quantitative comparison of the solar flux spe ctra with model spectra shows that Balmer line profile shapes, and therefore the temperature structure in the line formation region, are best represented under the mixing length theory by any combination of a low mixing-length parameter alpha and a low convective structure parameter y. A slightly lower effective temperature is obtained for the sun than the accepted value, which we attribute to errors in models and line opacities. The programme stars span temperatures from 4800 to 7100 K and include a small number of population II stars. Effective temperatures have been derived using a quantitative fitting method with a detailed error analysis. Our temperatures find good agreement with those from the Infrared Flux Method (IRFM) near solar metallicity but show differences at low metallicity where the two available IRFM determinations themselves are in disagreement. Comparison with recent temperature determinations using Balmer lines by Fuhrmann (1998, 2000), who employed a different description of the wing absorption due to self-broadening, does not show the large differences predicted by Barklem et al. (2000). In fact, perhaps fortuitously, reasonable agreement is found near solar metallicity, while we find significantly cooler temperatures for low metallicity stars of around solar temperature.

I report the discovery of blueshifted broad absorption line (BAL) troughs in at least six transitions of the Balmer series of hydrogen (Hbeta to H9) and in CaII, MgII and excited FeII in the quasar SDSS J125942.80+121312.6. This is only the fourth ac tive galactic nucleus known to exhibit Balmer absorption, all four in conjunction with low-ionization BAL systems containing excited Fe II. The substantial population in the n=2 shell of H I in this quasars absorber likely arises from Ly-alpha trapping. In an absorber sufficiently optically thick to show Balmer absorption, soft X-rays from the quasar penetrate to large tau_Lyalpha and ionize H I. Recombination then creates Ly-alpha photons that increase the n=2 population by a factor tau_Lyalpha since they require about tau_Lyalpha scatterings to diffuse out of the absorber. Observing Ly-alpha trapping in a quasar absorber requires a large but Compton-thin column of gas along our line of sight which includes substantial H I but not too much dust. Presumably the rarity of Balmer-line BAL troughs reflects the rarity of such conditions in quasar absorbers.

(abridged) Non-ionizing stellar continua are a source of photons for continuum pumping in the hydrogen Lyman transitions. In the environments where these transitions are optically thick, deexcitation occurs through higher series lines, so that the fl ux in these lines has a fluorescent contribution in addition to recombination; in particular, Balmer emissivities are systematically enhanced above case B. The effectiveness of such mechanism in HII regions and the adequacy of photoionization models as a tool to study it are the two main focuses of this work. We find that photoionization models of H II regions illuminated by low-resolution population synthesis models significantly overpredict the fluorescent contribution to the Balmer lines. Conversely, photoionization models in which the non-ionizing part of the continuum is omitted or is not transferred underpredict the fluorescent contribution to the Balmer lines, producing a bias of similar amplitude in the opposite direction. In this paper, we carry out realistic estimations of the fluorescent Balmer intensity and discuss the variations to be expected as the simulated observational setup and the stellar populations parameters are varied. In all the cases explored, we find that fluorescent excitation provides a significant contribution. We also show that differential fluorescent enhancement may produce line-of-sight differences in the Balmer decrement, mimicking interstellar extinction. Fluorescent excitation emerges from our study as a small but important mechanism for the enhancement of Balmer lines, which should be taken into account in the abundance analysis of photoionized regions, particularly in the case of high-precision applications such as the determination of primordial helium.
