[Abridged] We present the results of a large program conducted with the Very Large Telescope and Keck telescope to search for forming clusters of galaxies near powerful radio galaxies at 2.0 < z < 5.2. We obtained narrow- and broad-band images of nine radio galaxies and their surroundings. The imaging was used to select candidate Lyman alpha emitting galaxies in ~3x3 Mpc^2 areas near the radio galaxies. A total of 337 candidate emitters were found with a rest-frame Lyman alpha equivalent width of EW_0 > 15 A and Sigma = EW_0/Delta EW_0 > 3. Follow-up spectroscopy confirmed 168 Lyman alpha emitters near eight radio galaxies. The success rate of our selection procedure is 91%. At least six of our eight fields are overdense in Lyman alpha emitters by a factor 3-5. Also, the emitters show significant clustering in velocity space. In the overdense fields, the width of the velocity distributions of the emitters is a factor 2-5 smaller than the width of the narrow-band filters. Taken together, we conclude that we have discovered six forming clusters of galaxies (protoclusters). We estimate that roughly 75% of powerful (L_2.7GHz > 10^33 erg/s/Hz/sr) high redshift radio galaxies reside in a protocluster, with a sizes of at least 1.75 Mpc. We estimate that the protoclusters have masses in the range 2-9 x 10^14 Msun and they are likely to be progenitors of present-day (massive) clusters of galaxies. For the first time, we have been able to estimate the velocity dispersion of cluster progenitors from z~5 to ~2. The velocity dispersion of the emitters increases with cosmic time, in agreement with the dark matter velocity dispersion in numerical simulations of forming massive clusters.

We use the GALFORM semi-analytical model to study high density regions traced by radio galaxies and quasars at high redshifts. We explore the impact that baryonic physics has upon the properties of galaxies in these environments. Star-forming emissio n-line galaxies (Ly{alpha} and H{alpha} emitters) are used to probe the environments at high redshifts. Radio galaxies are predicted to be hosted by more massive haloes than quasars, and this is imprinted on the amplitude of galaxy overdensities and cross-correlation functions. We find that Ly{alpha} radiative transfer and AGN feedback indirectly affect the clustering on small scales and also the stellar masses, star- formation rates and gas metallicities of galaxies in dense environments. We also investigate the relation between protoclusters associated with radio galaxies and quasars, and their present- day cluster descendants. The progenitors of massive clusters associated with radio galaxies and quasars allow us to determine an average protocluster size in a simple way. Overdensities within the protoclusters are found to correlate with the halo descendant masses. We present scaling relations that can be applied to observational data. By computing projection effects due to the wavelength resolution of modern spectrographs and narrow-band filters we show that the former have enough spectral resolution to map the structure of protoclusters, whereas the latter can be used to measure the clustering around radio galaxies and quasars over larger scales to determine the mass of dark matter haloes hosting them.
We measure the 850-$mu$m source densities of 46 candidate protoclusters selected from the Planck High-z catalogue (PHz) and the Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources (PCCS) that were followed up with Herschel-SPIRE and SCUBA-2. This paper aims to searc h for overdensities of 850-$mu$m sources in order to select the fields that are most likely to be genuine protoclusters. Of the 46 candidate protoclusters, 25 have significant overdensities ($>$5 times the field counts), 11 have intermediate overdensities (3--5 times the field counts) and 10 have no overdensity ($<$3 times the field counts) of 850-$mu$m sources. We find that the enhanced number densities are unlikely to be the result of sample variance. Compared with the number counts of another sample selected from Plancks compact source catalogues, this [PHz+PCCS]-selected sample has a higher fraction of candidate protoclusters with significant overdensities, though both samples show overdensities of 850-$mu$m sources above intermediate level. Based on the estimated star-formation rate densities (SFRDs), we suggest that both samples can efficiently select protoclusters with starbursting galaxies near the redshift at which the global field SFRD peaks ($2 < z < 3$). Based on the confirmation of overdensities found here, future follow-up observations on other PHz targets may greatly increase the number of genuine DSFG-rich clusters/protoclusters.

We present the first mid-infrared Spitzer/Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) observations of powerful radio galaxies at z>2. These radio galaxies, 4C +23.56 (z=2.48) and 6C J1908+7220 (z=3.53), both show strong mid-infrared continua, but with 6C J1908+7220 also showing strong PAH emission at rest-frame 6.2 and 7.7um. In 4C+23.56 we see no obvious PAH features above the continuum. The PAH emission in 6C J1908+7220 is the amongst the most distant observed to date and implies that there is a large instantaneous star formation rate (SFR). This is consistent with the strong detection of 6C J1908+7220 at far-IR and sub-mm wavelengths, indicative of large amounts of cold dust, ~10^9Msun. Powerful radio galaxies at lower redshifts tend to have weak or undetectable PAH features and typically have lower far-IR luminosities. In addition, 4C 23.56 shows moderate silicate absorption as seen in less luminous radio galaxies, indicating tau_{9.7um}=0.3+/-0.05. This feature is shifted out of the observed wavelength range for 6C J1908+7220. The correlation of strong PAH features with large amounts of cold dust, despite the presence of a powerful AGN, is in agreement with other recent results and implies that star formation at high redshift is, in some cases at least, associated with powerful, obscured AGN.

We report deep Keck narrow-band Lya images of the luminous z > 3 radio galaxies 4C 41.17, 4C 60.07, and B2 0902+34. The images show giant, 100-200 kpc scale emission line nebulae, centered on these galaxies, which exhibit a wealth of morphological st ructure, including extended low surface brightness emission in the outer regions, radially directed filaments, cone-shaped structures and (indirect) evidence for extended Lya absorption. We discuss these features within a general scenario where the nebular gas cools gravitationally in large Cold Dark Matter (CDM) halos, forming stars and multiple stellar systems. Merging of these ``building blocks triggers large scale starbursts, forming the stellar bulges of massive radio galaxy hosts, and feeds super-massive black holes which produce the powerful radio jets and lobes. The radio sources, starburst superwinds and AGN radiation then disrupt the accretion process limiting galaxy and black hole growth, and imprint the observed filamentary and cone-shaped structures of the Lya nebulae.

We present a Herschel/SPIRE survey of three protoclusters at z=2-3 (2QZCluster, HS1700, SSA22). Based on the SPIRE colours (S350/S250 and S500/S350) of 250 $mu$m sources, we selected high redshift dusty star-forming galaxies potentially associated wi th the protoclusters. In the 2QZCluster field, we found a 4-sigma overdensity of six SPIRE sources around 4.5 (~2.2 Mpc) from a density peak of H$alpha$ emitters at z=2.2. In the HS1700 field, we found a 5-sigma overdensity of eight SPIRE sources around 2.1 (~1.0 Mpc) from a density peak of LBGs at z=2.3. We did not find any significant overdensities in SSA22 field, but we found three 500 $mu$m sources are concentrated 3 (~1.4 Mpc) east to the LAEs overdensity. If all the SPIRE sources in these three overdensities are associated with protoclusters, the inferred star-formation rate densities are 10$^3$-10$^4$ times higher than the average value at the same redshifts. This suggests that dusty star-formation activity could be very strongly enhanced in z~2-3 protoclusters. Further observations are needed to confirm the redshifts of the SPIRE sources and to investigate what processes enhance the dusty star-formation activity in z~2-3 protoclusters.
