We study metal abundances in the z=0.9313 damped Lya system observed in the two lines-of-sight, A and B, toward the gravitationally-lensed double QSO HE0512-3329. Spatially resolved STIS spectra constrain the neutral-gas column density to be LogN(HI)=20.5 in both Aand B. UVES spectra (spectral resolution FWHM=9.8 km/s) show, in contrast, significant line-of-sight differences in the column densities of MnII and FeII; these are not due to observational systematics. We find that [Mn/H]=-1.44 and [Fe/H]=-1.52 in damped Lya system A, while [Mn/H]=-0.98 and [Fe/H]>-1.32, and possibly as high as [Fe/H] approx. -1 in damped Lya system B. A careful assessment of possible systematic errors leads us to conclude that these transverse differences are significant at a 5 sigma level or greater. Although nucleosynthesis effects may also be at play, we favor differential dust-depletion as the main mechanism producing the observed abundance gradient. The transverse separation is 5 kpc at the redshift of the absorber, which is also likely to be the lensing galaxy. The derived abundances therefore probe two opposite sides of a single galaxy hosting both damped Lya systems. This is the first time firm abundance constraints have been obtained for a single damped system probed by two lines-of-sight. The significance of this finding for the cosmic evolution of metals is discussed.

Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) and sub-DLAs seen toward background quasars provide the most detailed probes of elemental abundances. Somewhat paradoxically these measurements are more difficult at lower redshifts due to the atmospheric cut-off, an d so a few years ago our group began a programme to study abundances at z < 1.5 in quasar absorbers. In this paper, we present new UVES observations of six additional quasar absorption line systems at z < 1.5, five of which are sub-DLAs. We find solar or above solar metallicity, as measured by the abundance of zinc, assumed not to be affected by dust, in two sub-DLAs: one, towards Q0138-0005 with [Zn/H]=+0.28 +/- 0.16; the other towards Q2335+1501 with [Zn/H]=+0.07 +/- 0.34. Relatively high metallicity was observed in another system: Q0123-0058 with [Zn/H]=-0.45 +/- 0.20. Only for the one DLA in our sample, in Q0449-1645, do we find a low metallicity, [Zn/H]=-0.96 +/- 0.08. We also note that in some of these systems large relative abundance variations from component to component are observed in Si, Mn, Cr and Zn.
Damped Lyman-alpha absorbers (DLAs), seen in absorption against a background quasar, provide the most detailed probes available of element abundances in the Universe over > 90 % of its age. DLAs can be used to observationally measure the global mean metallicity in the Universe and its evolution with time. Paradoxically, these observations are more difficult at lower redshifts, where the absorber rest-frame UV spectra are cut-off due to the atmospheric absorption. We present here high-resolution VLT/UVES observations of several elements contained in three DLAs and one sub-DLA with 0.6<z_abs<0.9. We detect Mg I, Mg II, Fe II, Zn II, Cr II, Mn II, Ti II and Ca II. Our observations more than double the high-resolution sample of [Zn/H] at z<1. We also report the discovery of three metal-rich systems, whereas most previous measurements show low N(HI)-weighted mean metallicity projecting to about 1/6th solar level at z=0. We derive [Zn/H]=-0.11+/-0.04 at z_abs=0.725, [Zn/H]=-0.54+/-0.20 at z_abs=0.740 and [Zn/H]=-0.49+/-0.22 at z_abs=0.652, plus one additional upper limit ([Zn/H]<-0.36 at z_abs=0.842). These measurements confirm the existence of quasar absorbers with relatively high metallicities based on abundance estimates free from the effect of dust depletion. Possible implications of these results for the metallicity of neutral gas phase in the past ~ 8 Gyr are presented and compared with models.

New optical and infrared observations along the sight-line toward the quasar OI 363 (0738+313) are presented and discussed. Excluding systems which lack confirming UV spectroscopic observations of the actual Lyman alpha line, this sight-line presentl y contains the two lowest-redshift classical damped Lyman alpha (DLA) quasar absorption line systems known (i.e. with N(HI) ge 2 x 10^{20} atoms cm^{-2}), one at z(abs)=0.0912 and the other at z(abs)=0.2212. The z=0.09 DLA galaxy appears to be an extended low surface brightness galaxy which is easily visible only in infrared images and shows rich morphological structure. Subtraction of the quasar nuclear and host light yields L_K approx 0.08L_K* at z=0.09. The impact parameter between the galaxy and quasar sight-line is very small, b<3.6 kpc (<2 arcsec), which makes measurements difficult. The z=0.22 DLA galaxy is an early-type dwarf with a K-band luminosity of L_K approx 0.1L_K* at impact parameter b=20 kpc. In general, these results serve to support mounting evidence that DLA galaxies are drawn from a wide variety of gas-rich galaxy types. (Abridged)

We report the discovery and analysis of the most metal-poor damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) system currently known, based on observations made with the Keck HIRES spectrograph. The metal paucity of this system has only permitted the determination of three e lement abundances: [C/H] = -3.43 +/- 0.06, [O/H] = -3.05 +/- 0.05, and [Si/H] = -3.21 +/- 0.05, as well as an upper limit on the abundance of iron: [Fe/H] < -2.81. This DLA is among the most carbon-poor environment currently known with detectable metals. By comparing the abundance pattern of this DLA to detailed models of metal-free nucleosynthesis, we find that the chemistry of the gas is consistent with the yields of a 20.5 M_sun metal-free star that ended its life as a core-collapse supernova; the abundances we measure are inconsistent with the yields of pair-instability supernovae. Such a tight constraint on the mass of the progenitor Population III star is afforded by the well-determined C/O ratio, which we show depends almost monotonically on the progenitor mass when the kinetic energy of the supernova explosion is E_exp > 1.5x10^51 erg. We find that the DLA presented here has just crossed the critical transition discriminant threshold, rendering the DLA gas now suitable for low mass star formation. We also discuss the chemistry of this system in the context of recent models that suggest some of the most metal-poor DLAs are the precursors of the first galaxies, and are the antecedents of the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies.
We report the discovery of a super-damped Lyman-alpha absorber at $z_{abs}=2.2068$ toward QSO Q1135-0010 in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and follow-up VLT UVES spectroscopy. Voigt profile fit to the DLA line indicates log $N_{rm H I} = 22.05 pm 0.1$ . This is the second QSO DLA discovered to date with such high $N_{rm H I}$. We derive element abundances [Si/H] = $-1.10 pm 0.10$, [Zn/H] = $-1.06 pm 0.10$, [Cr/H] = $-1.55 pm 0.10$, [Ni/H] = $-1.60 pm 0.10$, [Fe/H] = $-1.76 pm 0.10$, [Ti/H] = $-1.69 pm 0.11$, [P/H] = $-0.93 pm 0.23$, and [Cu/H] = $-0.75 pm 0.14$. Our data indicate detection of Ly-$alpha$ emission in the DLA trough, implying a star formation rate of $sim$10 $M_{odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ in the absence of dust attenuation. C II$^{*} , lambda 1336$ absorption is also detected, suggesting SFR surface density $-2 < {rm log} , dot{psi_{*}} < 0$ $M_{odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$. We estimate electron density in the range $3.5 times 10^{-4}$ to 24.7 cm$^{-3}$ from C II$^{*}$/C II, and $sim$0.5-0.9 cm$^{-3}$ from Si II$^{*}$/Si II. Overall, this is a robustly star-forming, moderately enriched absorber, but with relatively low dust depletion. Fitting of the SDSS spectrum yields low reddening for Milky Way, LMC, or SMC extinction curves. No CO absorption is detected, and C I absorption is weak. The low dust and molecular content, reminiscent of some SMC sight-lines, may result from the lower metallicity, and a stronger radiation field (due to higher SFR). Finally, we compare this absorber with other QSO and GRB DLAs.
