We present the first set of definitive trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions from the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory Parallax Investigation (CTIOPI). Full astrometric reductions for the program are discussed, including methods of reference stars selection, differential color refraction corrections, and conversion of relative to absolute parallax. Using data acquired at the 0.9-m at CTIO, full astrometric solutions and $VRIJHK_s$ photometry are presented for 36 red and white dwarf stellar systems with proper motions faster than 1farcs0/yr. Four of the systems are new members of the RECONS 10 pc sample for which the first accurate trigonometric parallaxes are published here: DENIS J1048-3956 (4.04 $pm$ 0.03 pc), GJ 1128 (LHS 271, 6.53 $pm$ 0.10 pc), GJ 1068 (LHS 22, 6.97 $pm$ 0.09 pc), and GJ 1123 (LHS 263, 9.02 $pm$ 0.16 pc). In addition, two red subdwarf-white dwarf pairs, LHS 193AB and LHS 300AB, are identified. The white dwarf secondaries fall in a previously uncharted region of the HR diagram.

Parallaxes, proper motions, and optical photometry are presented for 51 systems made up 37 cool subdwarf and 14 additional high proper motion systems. Thirty-seven systems have parallaxes reported for the first time, 15 of which have proper motions o f at least 1/yr. The sample includes 22 newly identified cool subdwarfs within 100 pc, of which three are within 25 pc, and an additional five subdwarfs from 100-160 pc. Two systems --- LSR 1610-0040 AB and LHS 440 AB --- are close binaries exhibiting clear astrometric perturbations that will ultimately provide important masses for cool subdwarfs. We use the accurate parallaxes and proper motions provided here, combined with additional data from our program and others to determine that effectively all nearby stars with tangential velocities greater than 200 km s$^{-1}$ are subdwarfs. We compare a sample of 167 confirmed cool subdwarfs to nearby main sequence dwarfs and Pleiades members on an observational Hertzsprung-Russell diagram using $M_V$ vs.~$(V-K_{s})$ to map trends of age and metallicity. We find that subdwarfs are clearly separated for spectral types K5--M5, indicating that the low metallicities of subdwarfs set them apart in the H-R diagram for $(V-K_{s})$ = 3--6. We then apply the tangential velocity cutoff and the subdwarf region of the H-R diagram to stars with parallaxes from {it Gaia} Data Release 1 and the MEarth Project to identify a total of 29 new nearby subdwarf candidates that fall clearly below the main sequence.
We present accurate trigonometric parallaxes for 20 new members of the 25 pc white dwarf sample as part of the DENSE project (Discovery and Evalution of Nearby Stellar Embers, http://www.DenseProject.com). Previously, there were a total of 112 white dwarf systems with trigonometric parallaxes placing them within 25 pc and of these, 99 have trigonometric parallaxes known to better than 10%. Thus, the 20 new members presented in this work represent a 20% increase in the number of white dwarfs accurately known to be within 25 pc. In addition, we present updated parallaxes for seven known white dwarfs within 10 pc that have been observed as part of the ASPENS initiative (Astrometric Search for Planets Encircling Nearby Stars) to monitor nearby southern red and white dwarfs for astrometric perturbations from unseen companions. Including a few white dwarf companions and white dwarfs beyond 25 pc, we present a total of 33 trigonometric parallaxes. We perform atmospheric modeling for white dwarfs to determine physical parameters (i.e., effective temperature, log g, mass, and white dwarf age). Finally, a new ZZ Ceti pulsating white dwarf was identified and revised constraints are placed on two mixed H/He atmosphere cool white dwarfs that display continuum absorption in the near-infrared.
We have conducted a novel search of most of the southern sky for nearby red dwarfs having low proper motions, with specific emphasis on those with proper motion < 0.18 arcsec yr-1, the lower cutoff of Luytens classic proper motion catalog. We used a tightly constrained search of the SuperCOSMOS database and a suite of photometric distance relations for photographic BRI and 2MASS JHKs magnitudes to estimate distances to more than fourteen million red dwarf candidates. Here we discuss 29 stars in 26 systems estimated to be within 25 parsecs, all of which have pm < 0.18 arcsec yr-1, which we have investigated using milliarcsecond astrometry, VRI photometry, and low-resolution spectroscopy. In total, we present the first parallaxes of 20 star systems, nine of which are within 25 parsecs. We have additionally identified eight young M dwarfs, of which two are new members of the nearby young moving groups, and 72 new giants, including two new carbon stars. We also present the entire catalog of 1215 sources we have identified by this means.
Here we present 1584 new southern proper motion systems with mu > 0.18 /yr and 16.5 > R_59F > 18.0. This search complements the six previous SuperCOSMOS-RECONS (SCR) proper motion searches of the southern sky for stars within the same proper motion r ange, but with R_59F < 16.5. As in previous papers, we present distance estimates for these systems and find that three systems are estimated to be within 25 pc, including one, SCR 1546-5534, possibly within the RECONS 10 pc horizon at 6.7 pc, making it the second nearest discovery of the searches. We find 97 white dwarf candidates with distance estimates between 10 and 120 pc, as well as 557 cool subdwarf candidates. The subdwarfs found in this paper make up nearly half of the subdwarf systems reported from our SCR searches, and are significantly redder than those discovered thus far. The SCR searches have now found 155 red dwarfs estimated to be within 25 pc, including 10 within 10 pc. In addition, 143 white dwarf candidates and 1155 cool subdwarf candidates have been discovered. The 1584 systems reported here augment the sample of 4724 systems previously discovered in our SCR searches, and imply that additional systems fainter than R_59F = 18.0 are yet to be discovered.
We report 1606 new proper motion systems in the southern sky (declinations -90 degrees to -47 degrees with 0.40 arcsec yr^-1 > mu >= 0.18 yr^-1. This effort is a continuation of the SuperCOSMOS-RECONS (SCR) proper motion search to lower proper motion s than reported in Papers VIII, X, XII, and XV in this series. Distance estimates are presented for the new systems, assuming that all stars are on the main sequence. We find that 31 systems are within 25 pc, including two systems -- SCR 0838-5855 and SCR 1826-6542 -- we anticipate to be within 10 pc. These new discoveries constitute a more than ten-fold increase in new systems found in the same region of sky searched for systems with mu >= 0.40 arcsec yr^-1, suggesting a happy hunting ground for new nearby slower proper motion systems in the region just north (declinations -47 degrees to 0 degrees, much of which has not been rigorously searched during previous efforts.
