The globular cluster M15 was observed on three occasions with the High Resolution Camera on board Chandra in 2001 in order to investigate the X-ray source population in the cluster centre. After subtraction of the two bright central sources, four faint sources were identified within 50 arcsec of the core. One of these sources is probably the planetary nebula, K648, making this the first positive detection of X-rays from a planetary nebula inside a globular cluster. Another two are identified with UV variables (one previously known), which we suggest are cataclysmic variables (CVs). The nature of the fourth source is more difficult to ascertain, and we discuss whether it is possibly a quiescent soft X-ray transient (qSXT) or also a CV.

We have used the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope to image the core of the globular cluster M15 in the far-ultraviolet (FUV) waveband. Based on these observations, we identify the FUV counterpart of the recently discove red low-mass X-ray binary M15 X-2. Our time-resolved FUV photometry shows a modulation with 0.062+/-0.004 mag semi-amplitude and we clearly detect a period of 22.5806+/-0.0002 min. We have carried out extensive Monte Carlo simulations which show that the signal is consistent with being coherent over the entire observational time range of more than 3000 cycles. This strongly suggests that it represents the orbital period of the binary system. M15 X-2 is FUV bright (approx. 17 mag) and is characterized by an extremely blue spectral energy distribution (F_lambda ~ lambda^{-2.0}). We also find evidence for an excess of flux between 1500 and 1600 AA and probably between 1600 and 2000 AA, which might be due to CIV 1550 and HeII 1640 emission lines. We also show that M15 X-2s X-ray luminosity can be powered by accretion at the rate expected for gravitational-wave-driven mass transfer at this binary period. The observed FUV emission appears to be dominated by an irradiated accretion disk around the neutron star primary, and the variability can be explained by irradiation of the low-mass white dwarf donor if the inclination of the system is approx. 34 degree. We conclude that all observational characteristics of M15 X-2 are consistent with it being an ultracompact X-ray binary, only the third confirmed such object in a globular cluster.
We observed the nearby, low-density globular cluster M71 (NGC 6838) with the Chandra X-ray Observatory to study its faint X-ray populations. Five X-ray sources were found inside the cluster core radius, including the known eclipsing binary millisecon d pulsar (MSP) PSR J1953+1846A. The X-ray light curve of the source coincident with this MSP shows marginal evidence for periodicity at the binary period of 4.2 h. Its hard X-ray spectrum and luminosity resemble those of other eclipsing binary MSPs in 47 Tuc, suggesting a similar shock origin of the X-ray emission. A further 24 X-ray sources were found within the half-mass radius, reaching to a limiting luminosity of 1.5 10^30 erg/s (0.3-8 keV). From a radial distribution analysis, we find that 18+/-6 of these 29 sources are associated with M71, somewhat more than predicted, and that 11+/-6 are background sources, both galactic and extragalactic. M71 appears to have more X-ray sources between L_X=10^30--10^31 erg/s than expected by extrapolating from other studied clusters using either mass or collision frequency. We explore the spectra and variability of these sources, and describe the results of ground-based optical counterpart searches.
We present an analysis of 745.6 ks of archival Chandra X-ray Observatory Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer data accumulated between 2000 and 2016 of the millisecond pulsar (MSP) population in the rich Galactic globular cluster Terzan 5. Eight of the 37 MSPs with precise positions are found to have plausible X-ray source matches. Despite the deep exposure, the remaining MSPs are either marginally detected or have no obvious X-ray counterparts, which can be attributed to the typically soft thermal spectra of rotation-powered MSPs, which are strongly attenuated by the high intervening absorbing column (~$10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) towards the cluster, and in some instances severe source crowding/blending. For the redback MSP binaries, PSRs J1748-2446P and J1748-2446ad, and the black widow binary PSRs J1748-2446O, we find clear evidence for large-amplitude X-ray variability at the orbital period consistent with an intrabinary shock origin. The third redback MSP in the cluster, PSR J1748-2446A, shows large amplitude variations in flux on time scales of years, possibility due to state transitions or intense flaring episodes from the secondary star.
We present a comprehensive X-ray point source catalog of NGC 404 obtained as part of the Chandra Local Volume Survey. A new, 97 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of NGC 404 was combined with archival observations for a total exposure of ~123 ks. Our surv ey yields 74 highly significant X-ray point sources and is sensitive to a limiting unabsorbed luminosity of ~6x10^35 erg s^-1 in the 0.35-8 keV band. To constrain the nature of each X-ray source, cross-correlations with multi-wavelength data were generated. We searched overlapping HST observations for optical counterparts to our X-ray detections, but find only two X-ray sources with candidate optical counterparts. We find 21 likely low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), although this number is a lower limit due to the difficulties in separating LMXBs from background AGN. The X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) in both the soft and hard energy bands are presented. The XLFs in the soft band (0.5-2 keV) and the hard band (2-8 keV) have a limiting luminosity at the 90% completeness limit of 10^35 erg s^-1 and 10^36 erg s^-1, respectively, significantly lower than previous X-ray studies of NGC 404. We find the XLFs to be consistent with those of other X-ray populations dominated by LMXBs. However, the number of luminous (>10^37 erg s^-1) X-ray sources per unit stellar mass in NGC 404 is lower than is observed for other galaxies. The relative lack of luminous XRBs may be due to a population of LMXBs with main sequence companions formed during an epoch of elevated star formation ~0.5 Gyr ago.

We have obtained deep far- (FUV) and near-ultraviolet (NUV) images of the inner region of the dense globular cluster M15 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The FUV-NUV colour-magnitude diagram shows a well defin ed track of horizontal branch stars, as well as a trail of blue stragglers and white dwarfs. The main sequence turn-off is clearly visible at FUV~23.5 mag and FUV-NUV~3 mag, and the main sequence stars form a prominent track that extends at least two magnitudes below the main sequence turn-off. As such, this is the deepest FUV-NUV colour-magnitude diagram of a globular cluster presented so far. Cataclysmic variable and blue straggler candidates are the most centrally concentrated stellar populations, which might either be an effect of mass segregation or reflect the preferred birthplace in the dense cluster core of such dynamically-formed objects. We find 41 FUV sources that exhibit significant variability. We classify the variables based on an analysis of their UV colours and variability properties. We find four previously known RR Lyrae and 13 further RR Lyrae candidates, one known Cepheid and six further candidates, six cataclysmic variables, one known and one probable SX Phoenicis star, and the well known low-mass X-ray binary AC211. Our analysis represents the first detection of SX Phoenicis pulsations in the FUV. We find that Cepheids, RR Lyraes and SX Phoenicis exhibit massive variability amplitudes in this waveband (several mags).
