We compare the measured peculiar velocities of 98 local (<150/h Mpc) type Ia supernovae with predictions derived from the PSCz survey. There is excellent agreement between the two datasets with a best fit beta_I (=Omega_m^0.6/b_I) of 0.55+-0.06. Subsets of the supernovae dataset are further analysed and the above result is found to be robust with respect to culls by distance, host-galaxy extinction and to the choice of reference frame in which the analysis is carried out. Alternative methods of determining beta_I including density-density comparisons, dipole measurements and WMAP-based results are also discussed. We conclude that most recent determinations are consistent with a value of beta_I=0.5.

We apply the Delaunay Tessellation Field Estimator (DTFE) to reconstruct and analyze the matter distribution and cosmic velocity flows in the Local Universe on the basis of the PSCz galaxy survey. The prime objective of this study is the production o f optimal resolution three-dimensional maps fully volume-covering of the volume-weighted velocity and density fields throughout the nearby Universe, out to a distance of 150 Mpc/h. Based on the Voronoi and Delaunay tessellation defined by the spatial galaxy sample, DTFE involves the estimate of density values on the basis of the volume of the related Delaunay tetrahedra and the subsequent use of theDelaunay tessellation as natural multidimensional (linear) interpolation grid for the corresponding density and velocity fields throughout the sample volume. The linearized model of the spatial galaxy distribution and the corresponding peculiar velocities of the PSCz galaxy sample, produced by Brachini et al. (1999), forms the input sample for the DTFE study. The DTFE maps reproduce the high-density supercluster regions in optimal detail, both their internal structure as well as their elongated or flattened shape. The corresponding velocity flows trace the bulk and shear flows marking the region extending from the Pisces-Perseus supercluster, via the Local superclusters, towards the Hydra-Centaurus and the Shapley concentration. The most outstanding and unique feature of the DTFE maps is the sharply defined radial outflow regions in and around underdense voids, marking the dynamical importance of voids in the Local Universe. The maximum expansion rate of voids defines a sharp cutoff in the DTFE velocity divergence pdf. We found that on the basis of this cutoff DTFE manages to consistently reproduce the value of O_m ~ 0.35 underlying the linearized velocity dataset.
We present the catalogue, mask, redshift data and selection function for the PSCz survey of 15411 IRAS galaxies across 84% of the sky. Most of the IRAS data is taken from the Point Source Catalog, but this has been supplemented and corrected in vario us ways to improve the completeness and uniformity. We quantify the known imperfections in the catalogue, and we assess the overall uniformity, completeness and data quality. We find that overall the catalogue is complete and uniform to within a few percent at high latitudes and 10% at low latitudes. Ancillary information, access details, guidelines and caveats for using the catalogue are given.
We compare the measured peculiar velocities of 98 local (<150/h Mpc) type Ia supernovae (SNIa) with predictions derived from the PSCz. There is excellent agreement between the two datasets with a best fit beta_I (=Omega_m^0.6/b_I) of 0.55+-0.06. Subs ets of the SNIa dataset are further analysed and the above result is found to be robust with respect to culls by distance, host-galaxy extinction and to the reference frame in which the analysis is carried out. We briefly review the peculiar motions in the direction of the Great Attractor. Most clusters in this part of the sky out to a distance of 14,000 km/s, i.e. those closer than the Shapley Concentration, have sizable positive peculiar velocities, i.e. (~ +400 km/s). There are nine local SNIa in the GA direction that are in the foreground of Shapley. All these SNIa have positive peculiar velocities. Hence both the cluster and local SNIa data strongly support the idea of a sizable flow into Shapley.
We compare the peculiar velocity field within 65 $h^{-1}$ Mpc predicted from 2MASS photometry and public redshift data to three independent peculiar velocity surveys based on type Ia supernovae, surface brightness fluctuations in ellipticals, and Tul ly-Fisher distances to spirals. The three peculiar velocity samples are each in good agreement with the predicted velocities and produce consistent results for $beta_{K}=Omegasbr{m}^{0.6}/b_{K}$. Taken together the best fit $beta_{K} = 0.49 pm 0.04$. We explore the effects of morphology on the determination of $beta$ by splitting the 2MASS sample into E+S0 and S+Irr density fields and find both samples are equally good tracers of the underlying dark matter distribution, but that early-types are more clustered by a relative factor $bsbr{E}/bsbr{S} sim 1.6$. The density fluctuations of 2MASS galaxies in $8 h^{-1}$ Mpc spheres in the local volume is found to be $sigmasbr{8,K} = 0.9$. From this result and our value of $beta_{K}$, we find $sigma_8 (Omegasbr{m}/0.3)^{0.6} = 0.91pm0.12$. This is in excellent agreement with results from the IRAS redshift surveys, as well as other cosmological probes. Combining the 2MASS and IRAS peculiar velocity results yields $sigma_8 (Omegasbr{m}^/0.3)^{0.6} = 0.85pm0.05$.
In this paper, the propagation of water surface waves over one-dimensional periodic and random bottoms is investigated by the transfer matrix method. For the periodic bottoms, the band structure is calculated, and the results are compared to the tran smission results. When the bottoms are randomized, the Anderson localization phenomenon is observed. The theory has been applied to an existing experiment (Belzons, et al., J. Fluid Mech. {bf 186}, 530 (1988)). In general, the results are compared favorably with the experimental observation.
