We present the first center-to-limb G-band images synthesized from high resolution simulations of solar magneto-convection. Towards the limb the simulations show hilly granulation with dark bands on the far side, bright granulation walls and striated faculae, similar to observations. At disk center G-band bright points are flanked by dark lanes. The increased brightness in magnetic elements is due to their lower density compared with the surrounding intergranular medium. One thus sees deeper layers where the temperature is higher. At a given geometric height, the magnetic elements are cooler than the surrounding medium. In the G-band, the contrast is further increased by the destruction of CH in the low density magnetic elements. The optical depth unity surface is very corrugated. Bright granules have their continuum optical depth unity 80 km above the mean surface, the magnetic elements 200-300 km below. The horizontal temperature gradient is especially large next to flux concentrations. When viewed at an angle, the deep magnetic elements optical surface is hidden by the granules and the bright points are no longer visible, except where the magnetic valleys are aligned with the line of sight. Towards the limb, the low density in the strong magnetic elements causes unit line-of-sight optical depth to occur deeper in the granule walls behind than for rays not going through magnetic elements and variations in the field strength produce a striated appearance in the bright granule walls.

We examine closely the solar Center-to-Limb variation of continua and lines and compare observations with predictions from both a 3-D hydrodynamic simulation of the solar surface (provided by M. Asplund and collaborators) and 1-D model atmospheres. I ntensities from the 3-D time series are derived by means of the new synthesis code ASSET, which overcomes limitations of previously available codes by including a consistent treatment of scattering and allowing for arbitrarily complex line and continuum opacities. In the continuum, we find very similar discrepancies between synthesis and observation for both types of model atmospheres. This is in contrast to previous studies that used a ``horizontally and time averaged representation of the 3-D model and found a significantly larger disagreement with observations. The presence of temperature and velocity fields in the 3-D simulation provides a significant advantage when it comes to reproduce solar spectral line shapes. Nonetheless, a comparison of observed and synthetic equivalent widths reveals that the 3-D model also predicts more uniform abundances as a function of position angle on the disk. We conclude that the 3-D simulation provides not only a more realistic description of the gas dynamics, but, despite its simplified treatment of the radiation transport, it also predicts reasonably well the observed Center-to-Limb variation, which is indicative of a thermal structure free from significant systematic errors.
We present the properties of the inverse Evershed flow (IEF) based on the center-to-limb variation of the plasma speed and loop geometry of chromospheric superpenumbral fibrils in eleven sunspots that were located at a wide range of heliocentric angl es from 12 to 79 deg. The observations were acquired at the Dunn Solar Telescope in the spectral lines of Halpha at 656nm, CaII IR at 854 nm and HeI at 1083 nm. All sunspots display opposite line-of-sight (LOS) velocities on the limb and center side with a distinct shock signature near the outer penumbral edge. We developed a simplified flexible sunspot model assuming axisymmetry and prescribing the radial flow speed profile at a known loop geometry to replicate the observed two-dimensional IEF patterns under different viewing angles. The simulated flow maps match the observations for chromospheric loops with 10-20 Mm length starting at 0.8-1.1 sunspot radii, an apex height of 2-3Mm and a true constant flow speed of 2-9km/s. We find on average a good agreement of the simulated velocities and the observations on elliptical annuli around the sunspot. Individual IEF channels show a significant range of variation in their properties and reach maximal LOS speeds of up to 12km/s. Upwards or downwards directed flows do not show a change of sign in the LOS velocities for heliocentric angles above 30 deg. Our results are consistent with the IEF being caused by a siphon flow mechanism driving a flow at a constant sonic speed along elevated loops with a flattened top in the chromosphere.

We present new observations of the center-to-limb variation of spectral lines in the quiet Sun. Our long-slit spectra are corrected for scattered light, which amounts to 4-8 % of the continuum intensity, by comparison with a Fourier transform spectru m of the disk center. We examine the effect of inelastic collisions with neutral hydrogen in NLTE line formation calculations of the oxygen infrared triplet, and the Na I 6160.8 A line. Adopting a classical one-dimensional theoretical model atmosphere, we find that the sodium transition, formed in higher layers, is much more effectively thermalized by hydrogen collisions than the high-excitation oxygen lines. This result appears as a simple consequence of the decrease of the ratio NH/Ne with depth in the solar photosphere. The center-to-limb variation of the selected lines is studied both under LTE and NLTE conditions. In the NLTE analysis, inelastic collisions with hydrogen atoms are considered with a simple approximation or neglected, in an attempt to test the validity of such approximation. For the sodium line studied, the best agreement between theory and observation happens when NLTE is considered and inelastic collisions with hydrogen are neglected in the rate equations. The analysis of the oxygen triplet benefits from a very detailed calculation using an LTE three-dimensional model atmosphere and NLTE line formation. The chi**2 statistics favors including hydrogen collisions with the approximation adopted, but the oxygen abundance derived in that case is significantly higher than the value derived from OH infrared transitions.

Using numerical simulations of the magnetised solar photosphere carried out with the radiative magneto-hydrodynamic code, MURaM, and detailed spectro-polarimetric diagnostics of the simulated photospheric 6302A FeI line, spectro-polarimetric signatur es of Alfven waves in magnetised intergranular lanes of the simulated solar photosphere were analysed at different positions at the solar disk. The torsional Alfven waves in the intergranular lanes are horizontal plasma motions, which do not have a thermal perturbation counterpart. We find signatures of Alfven waves as small-scale line profile Doppler shifts and Stokes-V area asymmetry enhancements in the simulated off-disk centre observations. These photospheric features disappear when the simulated observations are degraded with a telescope PSF similar to the one of Hinode. We analyse the possibilities for direct observations and confirmation of Alfven wave presence in the solar photosphere.

The equivalent widths (W) of 565 spectral lines in the wavelength range of 4690--6870A were evaluated at 31 consecutive points from the solar disk center (mu=cos(theta)=1) to near the limb (mu=0.25) by applying the synthetic spectrum-fitting techniqu e, in order to clarify the nature of their center--limb variations, especially the observed slope differing from line to line and its interpretation in terms of line properties. We found that the distribution of the gradient beta (= -dlog W/dlog mu) well correlates with that of dlog W/dlog T index, which means that the center-to-limb variation of W is determined mainly by the T-sensitivity of individual lines because the line-forming region shifts towards upper layers of lower T as we go toward the limb. Further, the key to understanding the behavior of dlog W/dlog T (depending on the temperature sensitivity of number population) is whether the considered species is in minor population stage or major population stage, by which the distribution of beta is explained in terms of differences in excitation potential and line strengths. All the center--limb data of equivalent widths (as well as line-of-sight turbulent velocity dispersions, elemental abundances, and mean line-formation depths derived as by-products) along with the solar spectra used for our analysis are made available as on-line materials.
