We present observations of the optical ``moving lines in spectra of the Galactic relativistic jet source SS433 spread over a twenty year baseline from 1979 to 1999. The red/blue-shifts of the lines reveal the apparent precession of the jet axis in SS433, and we present a new determination of the precession parameters based on these data. We investigate the amplitude and nature of time- and phase-dependent deviations from the kinematic model for the jet precession, including an upper limit on any precessional period derivative of $dot P < 5 times 10^{-5}$. We also dicuss the implications of these results for the origins of the relativistic jets in SS433.

The program HDECAY determines the partial decay widths and branching ratios of the Higgs bosons within the Standard Model with three and four generations of fermions, including the case when the Higgs couplings are rescaled, a general two--Higgs doub let model where the Higgs sector is extended and incorporates five physical states and its most studied incarnation, the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The program addresses all decay channels including the dominant higher-order effects such as radiative corrections and multi-body channels. Since the first launch of the program, more than twenty years ago, important aspects and new ingredients have been incorporated. In this update of the program description, some of the developments are summarized while others are discussed in some detail.
In 1995, C. I. Christov and M. G. Velarde introduced the concept of a dissipative soliton in a long-wave thin-film equation [Physica D 86, 323--347]. In the 25 years since, the subject has blossomed to include many related phenomena. The focus of thi s short note is to survey the conceptual influence of the concept of a production-dissipation (input-output) energy balance that they identified. Our recent results on nonlinear periodic waves as dissipative solitons (in a model equation for a ferrofluid interface in a parallel-flow rectangular geometry subject to an inhomogeneous magnetic field) have shown that the classical concept also applies to nonlocalized (specifically, spatially periodic) nonlinear coherent structures. Thus, we revisit the so-called KdV-KSV equation studied by C. I. Christov and M. G. Velarde to demonstrate that it also possesses spatially periodic dissipative soliton solutions. These coherent structures arise when the linearly unstable flat film state evolves to sufficiently large amplitude. The linear instability is then arrested when the nonlinearity saturates, leading to permanent traveling waves. Although the two model equations considered in this short note feature the same prototypical linear long-wave instability mechanism, along with similar linear dispersion, their nonlinearities are fundamentally different. These nonlinear terms set the shape and eventual dynamics of the nonlinear periodic waves. Intriguingly, the nonintegrable equations discussed in this note also exhibit multiperiodic nonlinear wave solutions, akin to the polycnoidal waves discussed by J. P. Boyd in the context of the completely integrable KdV equation.

A concise, somewhat personal, review of the problem of superfluidity and quantum criticality in regular and disordered interacting Bose systems is given, concentrating on general features and important symmetries that are exhibited in different parts of the phase diagram, and that govern the different possible types of critical behavior. A number of exact results for various insulating phase boundaries, which may be used to constrain the results of numerical simulations, can be derived using large rare region type arguments. The nature of the insulator-superfluid transition is explored through general scaling arguments, exact model calculations in one dimension, numerical results in two dimensions, and approximate renormalization group results in higher dimensions. Experiments on He-4 adsorbed in porous Vycor glass, on thin film superconductors, and magnetically trapped atomic vapors in a periodic optical potential, are used to illustrate many of the concepts.

What is the shape of the Universe? Is it finite or infinite ? Is space multi-connected to create ghost images of faraway cosmic sources? After a dark age period, the field of cosmic topology has now become one of the major concerns in astronomy and c osmology, not only from theorists but also from observational astronomers. Here I give a personal account of the spectacular progress in the field since the beginning of the 1990s, when I started to work in it.

In 1995, a team of physicists from the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk was able to observe the splitting of a photon in the Coulomb field of an atomic nucleus for the first time, and reported the preliminary results of this experim ent at two conferences. This was an extremely difficult experiment as the probability of the process is very small. It took another seven years to publish the final results. This story has been further developed recently. The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider observed in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions a process related to the photon splitting - light by light scattering. In addition, a team of Italian, Polish and British astrophysicists obtained the first observational evidence of the existence of vacuum birefringence in the magnetic field of an isolated neutron star - another physical phenomenon also related to the photon splitting. These new developments triggered this essay, written several years ago.
