Based on updated pulsation models for Classical Cepheids, computed for various assumptions about the metallicity and helium abundance, roughly representative of pulsators in the Small Magellanic Cloud ($Z$=$0.004$ and $Y$=$0.25$), Large Magellanic Cloud ($Z$=$0.008$ and $Y$=$0.25$), and M31 ($Z$=$0.03$ and $Y$=$0.28$), and self-consistent updated evolutionary predictions, we derived Period-Age and multi-band Period-Age-Color relations that also take into account variations in the Mass-Luminosity relation. These results, combined with those previously derived for Galactic Cepheids, were used to investigate the metallicity effect when using these variables as age indicators. In particular, we found that a variation in the metal abundance affects both the slope and the zero point of the above-mentioned relations. The new relations were applied to a sample of Gaia Early Data Release 3 Classical Cepheids. The retrieved distribution of the individual ages confirms that a brighter Mass-Luminosity relation produces older ages and that First Overtone pulsators are found to be concentrated towards older ages with respect to the Fundamental ones at a fixed Mass-Luminosity relation. Moreover, the inclusion of a metallicity term in the Period-Age and Period-Age-Color relations slightly modifies the predicted ages. In particular, the age distribution of the selected sample of Galactic Cepheids is found to be shifted towards slightly older values, when the F-mode canonical relations are considered, with respect to the case at a fixed solar chemical composition. A marginally opposite dependence can be found in the noncanonical F-mode and canonical FO-mode cases.

Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) are the most important primary indicators for the extragalactic distance scale. Establishing the dependence on metallicity of their period--luminosity and period--Wesenheit (PL/PW) relations has deep consequences on the est imate of the Hubble constant (H$_0$). We aim at investigating the dependence on metal abundance ([Fe/H]) of the PL/PW relations for Galactic DCEPs. We combined proprietary and literature photometric and spectroscopic data, gathering a total sample of 413 Galactic DCEPs (372 fundamental mode -- DCEP_F and 41 first overtone -- DCEP_1O) and constructed new metallicity-dependent PL/PW relations in the near infra-red (NIR) adopting the Astrometric Based Luminosity. We find indications that the slopes of the PL$(K_S)$ and PW$(J,K_S)$ relations for Galactic DCEPs might depend on metallicity when compared to the Large Magellanic Cloud relationships. Therefore, we have used a generalized form of the PL/PW relations to simultaneously take into account the metallicity dependence of the slope and intercept of these relations. We calculated PL/PW relations which, for the first time, explicitly include a metallicity dependence of both the slope and intercept terms. Although the insufficient quality of the available data makes our results not yet conclusive, they are relevant from a methodological point of view. The new relations are linked to the geometric measurement of the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud and allowed us to estimate a {it Gaia} DR2 parallax zero point offset $Delta varpi$=0.0615$pm$0.004 mas from the dataset of DCEPs used in this work.
The photometric data for 460 classical, fundamental-mode Cepheids in the SMC with log P > 0.4 measured by Udalski et al. have been analyzed for their P-C and P-L relations, and for the variation of amplitude across the instability strip in a similar way that was done in Papers I and II of this series. The SMC Cepheids are bluer in (B-V) at a given period than for both the Galaxy and the LMC. Their P-C relation in (B-V) is best fit by two lines intersecting at P=10 d. Their break must necessarily exist also in the P-L relations in B and/or V, but remains hidden in the magnitude scatter. An additional pronounced break of the P-L relations in B, V, and I occurs at P=2.5 d. The observed slope of the lines of constant period in the HR diagram agrees with the theoretical expectation from the pulsation equation. The largest amplitude Cepheids for periods less than 13 days occur near the blue edge of the instability strip. The sense is reversed in the period interval from 13 to 20 days, as in the Galaxy and the LMC. The SMC P-L relation is significantly flatter than that for the Galaxy, NGC 3351, 4321, M31, all of which have nearly the same steep slope. The SMC P-L slope is intermediate between that of these steep slope cases and the very shallow slope of Cepheids in the lower metallicity galaxies of NGC 3109 and Sextans A/B, consistent with the premise that the Cepheid P-L relation varies from galaxy-to-galaxy as function of metallicity. Failure to take into account the slope differences in the P-L relation as a function of metallicity using Cepheids as distance indicators results in incorrect Cepheid distances. Part of the 15% difference between our long distance scale - now independently supported by TRGB distances - and that of the HST Key Project short scale is due to the effect of using an inappropriate P-L relation.
Photometric data for 593 Cepheids in the LMC, measured by Udalski et al. in the OGLE survey, augmented by 92 longer period Cepheids from other sources, are analyzed for the P-C and P-L relations, and for the variations of amplitude, light curve shape , and period across the instability strip at constant absolute magnitude. Both the P-C and P-L relations have different slopes for periods smaller and larger than 10 days. The break at 10 days is also seen in the period-amplitude relations, and the compound Fourier combinations of R_21 and Phi_21 introduced by Simon and Lee. The LMC Cepheids are bluer than Galactic Cepheids in the B,V,I color bands, part of which is due to differential Fraunhofer line blanketing and part to real differences in the temperature boundaries of the instability strip. The LMC strip is hotter by between 80K and 350K depending on the period. Hence, both the slopes and (necessarily) the zero points of the P-L relations in B,V,I must differ between LMC and the the Galaxy, and in fact they do. The LMC Cepheids are brighter by up to 0.5 mag at log P=0.4 (2 days) and fainter by 0.2 mag at log P=1.5 (32 days). These facts complicate the use of Cepheid as precision distance indicators until the reason is found for the non-universality of the P-L and P-C relations. The very large data base permits mapping of various Cepheid properties at different positions within the instability strip, both at constant period and at constant absolute magnitude over the range of 2 < P < 40 days and -2 > M_V > -5. We present results of the analysis of 70 RR Lyrae stars located in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Combining spectroscopically determined metallicity of these stars from the literature with precise periods from the OGLE III catalogue and multi-epoch $K_{rm s}$ photometry from the VISTA survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC), we derive a new near-infrared period-luminosity-metallicity (${rm PL_{K_{rm s}}Z}$) relation for RR Lyrae variables. In order to fit the relation we use a fitting method developed specifically for this study. The zero-point of the relation is estimated in two different ways: by assuming the value of the distance to the LMC and by using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) parallaxes of five RR Lyrae stars in the Milky Way (MW). The difference in distance moduli derived by applying these two approaches is $sim0.2$ mag. To investigate this point further we derive the ${rm PL_{K_{rm s}}Z}$ relation based on 23 MW RR Lyrae stars which had been analysed in Baade-Wesselink studies. We compared the derived ${rm PL_{K_{rm s}}Z}$ relations for RR Lyrae stars in the MW and LMC. Slopes and zero-points are different, but still consistent within the errors. The shallow slope of the metallicity term is confirmed by both LMC and MW variables. The astrometric space mission Gaia is expected to provide a huge contribution to the determination of the RR Lyrae ${rm PL_{K_{rm s}}Z}$ relation, however, calculating an absolute magnitude from the trigonometric parallax of each star and fitting a ${rm PL_{K_{rm s}}Z}$ relation directly to period and absolute magnitude leads to biased results. We present a tool to achieve an unbiased solution by modelling the data and inferring the slope and zero-point of the relation via statistical methods.
We present newly-calibrated period-$phi_{31}$-[Fe/H] relations for fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars in the optical and, for the first time, mid-infrared. This works calibration dataset provides the largest and most comprehensive span of parameter spac e to date with homogeneous metallicities from $-3<textrm{[Fe/H]}<0.4$ and accurate Fourier parameters derived from 1980 ASAS-SN ($V$-band) and 1083 WISE (NEOWISE extension, $W1$ and $W2$ bands) RR Lyrae stars with well-sampled light curves. We compare our optical period-$phi_{31}$-[Fe/H] with those available in the literature and demonstrate that our relation minimizes systematic trends in the lower and higher metallicity range. Moreover, a direct comparison shows that our optical photometric metallicities are consistent with both those from high-resolution spectroscopy and globular clusters, supporting the good performance of our relation. We found an intrinsic scatter in the photometric metallicities (0.41 dex in the $V$-band and 0.50 dex in the infrared) by utilizing large calibration datasets covering a broad metallicity range. This scatter becomes smaller when optical and infrared bands are used together (0.37 dex). Overall, the relations derived in this work have many potential applications, including large-area photometric surveys with JWST in the infrared and LSST in the optical.
