In this short note, we present some evidence towards the existence of an algebra of BPS $G_2$ instantons. These are instantonic configurations that govern the partition functions of 7d SYM theories on local $G_2$ holonomy manifolds $mathcal X$. To shed light on such structure, we begin investigating the relation with parent 4d $mathcal N=1$ theories obtained by geometric engineering M-theory on $mathcal X$. The main point of this paper is to substantiate the following dream: the holomorphic sector of such theories on multi-centered Taub-NUT spaces gives rise to an algebra whose characters organise the $G_2$ instanton partition function. As a first step towards this program, we argue by string duality that a multitude of geometries $mathcal X$ exist that are dual to well-known 4d SCFTs arising from D3 branes probes of CY cones: all these models are amenable to analysis along the lines suggested by Dijkgraaf, Gukov, Neitzke and Vafa in the context of topological M-theory. Moreover, we discuss an interesting relation to Costellos twisted M-theory, which arises at local patches, and is a key ingredient in identifying the relevant algebras.

There exists a recursive algorithm for constructing BPST-type multi-instantons on commutative R^4. When deformed noncommutatively, however, it becomes difficult to write down non-singular instanton configurations with topological charge greater than one in explicit form. We circumvent this difficulty by allowing for the translational instanton moduli to become noncommutative as well. This makes possible the ADHM construction of t Hooft multi-instanton solutions with everywhere self-dual field strengths on noncommutative R^4.

We consider topology-changing transitions between 7-manifolds of holonomy G_2 constructed as a quotient of CY x S^1 by an antiholomorphic involution. We classify involutions for Complete Intersection CY threefolds, focussing primarily on cases withou t fixed points. The ordinary conifold transition between CY threefolds descends to a transition between G_2 manifolds, corresponding in the N=1 effective theory incorporating the light black hole states either to a change of branch in the scalar potential or to a Higgs mechanism. A simple example of conifold transition with a fixed nodal point is also discussed. As a spin-off, we obtain examples of G_2 manifolds with the same value for the sum of Betti numbers b_2+b_3, and hence potential candidates for mirror manifolds.
We construct the half-supersymmetric instanton solutions that are electric-magnetically dual to the recently discussed half-supersymmetric Q7-branes. We call these instantons `Q-instantons. Whereas the D-instanton is most conveniently described using the RR axion chi and the dilaton phi, the Q-instanton is most conveniently described using a different set of fields chi and T, where chi is an axionic scalar. The real part of the Q-instanton on-shell action is a function of T and the imaginary part is linear in chi. Discrete shifts of the axion chi correspond to PSL(2,Z) transformations that are of finite order. These are e.g. pure S-duality transformations relating weak and strongly coupled regimes. We argue that near each orbifold point of the quantum axion-dilaton moduli space PSL(2,Z)PSL(2,R)/SO(2) the higher order R^4 terms in the string effective action contain contributions from an infinite sum of single multiply-charged instantons with the Q-instantons corresponding to the orbifold points tau=i,rho where tau is the complex axion-dilaton field.
M-theory compactified on $G_2$-holonomy manifolds results in 4d $mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories coupled to gravity. In this paper we focus on the gauge sector of such compactifications by studying the Higgs bundle obtained from a partial ly twisted 7d super Yang-Mills theory on a supersymmetric three-cycle $M_3$. We derive the BPS equations and find the massless spectrum for both abelian and non-abelian gauge groups in 4d. The mathematical tool that allows us to determine the spectrum is Morse theory, and more generally Morse-Bott theory. The latter generalization allows us to make contact with twisted connected sum (TCS) $G_2$-manifolds, which form the largest class of examples of compact $G_2$-manifolds. M-theory on TCS $G_2$-manifolds is known to result in a non-chiral 4d spectrum. We determine the Higgs bundle for this class of $G_2$-manifolds and provide a prescription for how to engineer singular transitions to models that have chiral matter in 4d.
We give an octonionic formulation of the N = 1 supersymmetry algebra in D = 11, including all brane charges. We write this in terms of a novel outer product, which takes a pair of elements of the division algebra A and returns a real linear operator on A. More generally, with this product comes the power to rewrite any linear operation on R^n (n = 1,2,4,8) in terms of multiplication in the n-dimensional division algebra A. Finally, we consider the reinterpretation of the D = 11 supersymmetry algebra as an octonionic algebra in D = 4 and the truncation to division subalgebras.
