Synthesizing many-body interaction Hamiltonian is a central task in quantum simulation. However, it is challenging to synthesize interactions including more than two spins. Borrowing tools from quantum optics, we synthesize five-body spin-exchange interaction in a superconducting quantum circuit by simultaneously exciting four independent qubits with time-energy correlated photon quadruples generated from a qudit. During the dynamic evolution of the five-body interaction, a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state is generated in a single step with fidelity estimated to be $0.685$. We compare the influence of noise on the three-, four- and five-body interaction as a step toward answering the question on the quantum origin of chiral molecules. We also demonstrate a many-body Mach-Zehnder interferometer which potentially has a Heisenberg-limit sensitivity. This study paves a way for quantum simulation involving many-body interactions and high excited states of quantum circuits.

Superconducting qubits provide a competitive platform for quantum simulation of complex dynamics that lies at the heart of quantum many-body systems, because of the flexibility and scalability afforded by the nature of microfabrication. However, in a multiqubit device, the physical form of couplings between qubits is either an electric (capacitor) or magnetic field (inductor), and the associated quadratic field energy determines that only two-body interaction in the Hamiltonian can be directly realized. Here we propose and experimentally synthesize the three-body spin-chirality interaction in a superconducting circuit based on Floquet engineering. By periodically modulating the resonant frequencies of the qubits connected with each other via capacitors, we can dynamically turn on and off qubit-qubit couplings, and further create chiral flows of the excitations in the three-qubit circular loop. Our result is a step toward engineering dynamical and many-body interactions in multiqubit superconducting devices, which potentially expands the degree of freedom in quantum simulation tasks.

Anyons are exotic quasiparticles obeying fractional statistics, whose behavior can be emulated in artificially designed spin systems. Here we present an experimental emulation of creating anyonic excitations in a superconducting circuit that consists o f four qubits, achieved by dynamically generating the ground and excited states of the toric code model, i.e., four-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states. The anyonic braiding is implemented via single-qubit rotations: a phase shift of pi related to braiding, the hallmark of Abelian 1/2 anyons, has been observed through a Ramsey-type interference measurement.
Connecting nanoscale mechanical resonators to microwave quantum circuits opens new avenues for storing, processing, and transmitting quantum information. In this work, we couple a phononic crystal cavity to a tunable superconducting quantum circuit. By fabricating a one-dimensional periodic pattern in a thin film of lithium niobate and introducing a defect in this artificial lattice, we localize a 6 gigahertz acoustic resonance to a wavelength-scale volume of less than one cubic micron. The strong piezoelectricity of lithium niobate efficiently couples the localized vibrations to the electric field of a widely tunable high-impedance Josephson junction array resonator. We measure a direct phonon-photon coupling rate $g/2pi approx 1.6 , mathrm{MHz}$ and a mechanical quality factor $Q_mathrm{m} approx 3 times 10^4$ leading to a cooperativity $Csim 4$ when the two modes are tuned into resonance. Our work has direct application to engineering hybrid quantum systems for microwave-to-optical conversion as well as emerging architectures for quantum information processing.
Unveiling the impact in thermodynamics of the phenomena specific to quantum mechanics is a crucial step to identify fundamental costs for quantum operations and quantum advantages in heat engines. We propose a two-reservoir setup to detect the quantu m component in the heat flow exchanged by a coherently driven atom with its thermal environment. Tuning the driving parameters switches on and off the quantum and classical contributions to the heat flows, enabling their independent characterization. We demonstrate the feasibility of the measurement in a circuit-QED setup. Our results pave the road towards the first experimental verification of this quantum thermodynamic signature ubiquitous in quantum technologies.

Simulating quantum physics with a device which itself is quantum mechanical, a notion Richard Feynman originated, would be an unparallelled computational resource. However, the universal quantum simulation of fermionic systems is daunting due to thei r particle statistics, and Feynman left as an open question whether it could be done, because of the need for non-local control. Here, we implement fermionic interactions with digital techniques in a superconducting circuit. Focusing on the Hubbard model, we perform time evolution with constant interactions as well as a dynamic phase transition with up to four fermionic modes encoded in four qubits. The implemented digital approach is universal and allows for the efficient simulation of fermions in arbitrary spatial dimensions. We use in excess of 300 single-qubit and two-qubit gates, and reach global fidelities which are limited by gate errors. This demonstration highlights the feasibility of the digital approach and opens a viable route towards analog-digital quantum simulation of interacting fermions and bosons in large-scale solid state systems.
