In this paper, we study the spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) of asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) for visible light communication (VLC). Firstly, we derive the achiev-able rates for Gaussian distributions inputs and practical finite-alphabet inputs. Then, we investigate the SE maximization problems subject to both the total transmit power constraint and the average optical power constraint with the above two inputs, respectively. By exploiting the relationship between the mutual information and the minimum mean-squared error, an optimal power allocation scheme is proposed to maximize the SE with finite-alphabet inputs. To reduce the computational complexity of the power allocation scheme, we derive a closed-form lower bound of the SE. Also, considering the quality of service, we further tackle the non-convex EE maximization problems of ACO-OFDM with the two inputs, respectively. The problems are solved by the proposed Dinkelbach-type iterative algorithm. In each iteration, the interior point algorithm is applied to obtain the optimal power allocation. The performance of the proposed power allocation schemes for the SE and EE maximization are validated through numerical analysis.

In wireless communication systems, the nonlinear effect and inefficiency of power amplifier (PA) have posed practical challenges for system designs to achieve high spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). In this paper, we analyze the imp act of PA on the SE-EE tradeoff of orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) systems. An ideal PA that is always linear and incurs no additional power consumption can be shown to yield a decreasing convex function in the SE-EE tradeoff. In contrast, we show that a practical PA has an SE-EE tradeoff that has a turning point and decreases sharply after its maximum EE point. In other words, the Pareto-optimal tradeoff boundary of the SE-EE curve is very narrow. A wide range of SE-EE tradeoff, however, is desired for future wireless communications that have dynamic demand depending on the traffic loads, channel conditions, and system applications, e.g., high-SE-with-low-EE for rate-limited systems and high-EE-with-low-SE for energy-limited systems. For the SE-EE tradeoff improvement, we propose a PA switching (PAS) technique. In a PAS transmitter, one or more PAs are switched on intermittently to maximize the EE and deliver an overall required SE. As a consequence, a high EE over a wide range SE can be achieved, which is verified by numerical evaluations: with 15% SE reduction for low SE demand, the PAS between a low power PA and a high power PA can improve EE by 323%, while a single high power PA transmitter improves EE by only 68%.
A massive multiple input multiple-output system is very important to optimize the trade-off energy efficiency and spectral efficiency in fifth-generation cellular networks. The challenges for the next generation depend on increasing the high data tra ffic in the wireless communication system for both EE and SE. In this paper, the trade off energy efficiency and spectral efficiency based on the first derivative of transmit antennas and transmit power in a downlink massive MIMO system has been investigated. The trade off EE-SE by using a multiobjective optimization problem to decrease transmit power has been analyzed. The EE and SE based on constraint maximum transmit power allocation and a number of antennas by computing the first derivative of transmit power to maximize the trade-off energy efficiency and spectral efficiency has been improved. From the simulation results, the optimum trade-off between EE and SE can be obtained based on the first derivative by selecting the optimal antennas with a low cost of transmit power. Therefore, based on an optimal optimization problem is flexible to make trade-offs between EE-SE for distinct preferences
Due to the power consumption and high circuit cost in antenna arrays, the practical application of massive multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) in the sixth generation (6G) and future wireless networks is still challenging. Employing lowresolution an alog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and hybrid analog and digital (HAD) structure is two low-cost choice with acceptable performance loss. In this paper, the combination of the mixedADC architecture and HAD structure employed at receiver is proposed for direction of arrival (DOA) estimation, which will be applied to the beamforming tracking and alignment in 6G. By adopting the additive quantization noise model, the exact closedform expression of the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) for the HAD architecture with mixed-ADCs is derived. Moreover, the closed-form expression of the performance loss factor is derived as a benchmark. In addition, to take power consumption into account, energy efficiency is also investigated in our paper. The numerical results reveal that the HAD structure with mixedADCs can significantly reduce the power consumption and hardware cost. Furthermore, that architecture is able to achieve a better trade-off between the performance loss and the power consumption. Finally, adopting 2-4 bits of resolution may be a good choice in practical massive MIMO systems.

Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) during communication is emerging. This technology promises to provide information on propagation environments and transceivers location, thus creating several new services and applications for the Internet of Things and environment-aware communication. Using crowdsourcing data collected by multiple agents appears to be much potential for enhancing SLAM performance. However, the measurement uncertainties in practice and biased estimations from multiple agents may result in serious errors. This study develops a robust SLAM method with measurement plug-and-play and crowdsourcing mechanisms to address the above problems. First, we divide measurements into different categories according to their unknown biases and realize a measurement plug-and-play mechanism by extending the classic belief propagation (BP)-based SLAM method. The proposed mechanism can obtain the time-varying agent location, radio features, and corresponding measurement biases (such as clock bias, orientation bias, and received signal strength model parameters), with high accuracy and robustness in challenging scenarios without any prior information on anchors and agents. Next, we establish a probabilistic crowdsourcing-based SLAM mechanism, in which multiple agents cooperate to construct and refine the radio map in a decentralized manner. Our study presents the first BP-based crowdsourcing that resolves the double count and data reliability problems through the flexible application of probabilistic data association methods. Numerical results reveal that the crowdsourcing mechanism can further improve the accuracy of the mapping result, which, in turn, ensures the decimeter-level localization accuracy of each agent in a challenging propagation environment.

In this paper, we propose an iterative receiver based on gridless variational Bayesian line spectra estimation (VALSE) named JCCD-VALSE that emph{j}ointly estimates the emph{c}arrier frequency offset (CFO), the emph{c}hannel with high resolution and carries out emph{d}ata decoding. Based on a modularized point of view and motivated by the high resolution and low complexity gridless VALSE algorithm, three modules named the VALSE module, the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) module and the decoder module are built. Soft information is exchanged between the modules to progressively improve the channel estimation and data decoding accuracy. Since the delays of multipaths of the channel are treated as continuous parameters, instead of on a grid, the leakage effect is avoided. Besides, the proposed approach is a more complete Bayesian approach as all the nuisance parameters such as the noise variance, the parameters of the prior distribution of the channel, the number of paths are automatically estimated. Numerical simulations and sea test data are utilized to demonstrate that the proposed approach performs significantly better than the existing grid-based generalized approximate message passing (GAMP) based emph{j}oint emph{c}hannel and emph{d}ata decoding approach (JCD-GAMP). Furthermore, it is also verified that joint processing including CFO estimation provides performance gain.
