Early in their lives, planets endure extreme amounts of ionizing radiation from their host stars. For planets with primordial hydrogen and helium-rich envelopes, this can lead to substantial mass loss. Direct observations of atmospheric escape in young planetary systems can help elucidate this critical stage of planetary evolution. In this work, we search for metastable helium absorption---a tracer of tenuous gas in escaping atmospheres---during transits of three planets orbiting the young solar analogue V1298 Tau. We characterize the stellar helium line using HET/HPF, and find that it evolves substantially on timescales of days to months. The line is stable on hour-long timescales except for one set of spectra taken during the decay phase of a stellar flare, where absoprtion increased with time. Utilizing a beam-shaping diffuser and a narrowband filter centered on the helium feature, we observe four transits with Palomar/WIRC: two partial transits of planet d ($P = 12.4$ days), one partial transit of planet b ($P = 24.1$ days), and one full transit of planet c ($P = 8.2$ days). We do not detect the transit of planet c, and we find no evidence of excess absorption for planet b, with $Delta R_mathrm{b}/R_star<0.019$ in our bandpass. We find a tentative absorption signal for planet d with $Delta R_mathrm{d}/R_star = 0.0205pm0.054$, but the best-fit model requires a substantial (-100$pm$14 min) transit-timing offset on a two-month timescale. Nevertheless, our data suggest that V1298 Tau d may have a high present-day mass-loss rate, making it a priority target for follow-up observations.

The 23 Myr system V1298 Tau hosts four transiting planets and is a valuable laboratory for exploring the early stages of planet evolution soon after formation of the star. We observe the innermost planet, V1298 Tau c, during transit using LBT PEPSI t o obtain high spectral resolution characterization of escaping material near the H-alpha line. We find no strong evidence for atmospheric material escaping at the orbital velocity of the planet. Instead, we find a deep stellar feature that is variable on the few percent level, similar to a previous observation of the planet and can be explained by stellar activity. We attempted to monitor the broadband optical transit with LBT MODS but do not achieve the precision needed to characterize the atmosphere or improve the ephemeris.
Exoplanets orbiting pre-main sequence stars are laboratories for studying planet evolution processes, including atmospheric loss, orbital migration, and radiative cooling. V1298 Tau, a young solar analog with an age of 23 $pm$ 4 Myr, is one such labo ratory. The star is already known to host a Jupiter-sized planet on a 24 day orbit. Here, we report the discovery of three additional planets --- all between the size of Neptune and Saturn --- based on our analysis of K2 Campaign 4 photometry. Planets c and d have sizes of 5.6 and 6.4 $R_oplus$, respectively and with orbital periods of 8.25 and 12.40 days reside 0.25% outside of the nominal 3:2 mean-motion resonance. Planet e is 8.7 $R_oplus$ in size but only transited once in the K2 time series and thus has a period longer than 36 days, but likely shorter than 223 days. The V1298 Tau system may be a precursor to the compact multiplanet systems found to be common by the Kepler mission. However, the large planet sizes stand in sharp contrast to the vast majority of Kepler multis which have planets smaller than 3 $R_oplus$. Simple dynamical arguments suggest total masses of $<$28 $M_oplus$ and $<$120 $M_oplus$ for the c-d and d-b planet pairs, respectively. The implied low masses suggest that the planets may still be radiatively cooling and contracting, and perhaps losing atmosphere. The V1298 Tau system offers rich prospects for further follow-up including atmospheric characterization by transmission or eclipse spectroscopy, dynamical characterization through transit-timing variations, and measurements of planet masses and obliquities by radial velocities.
We report the detection of V1298 Tau b, a warm Jupiter-sized planet ($R_P$ = 0.91 $pm$ 0.05~ $R_mathrm{Jup}$, $P = 24.1$ days) transiting a young solar analog with an estimated age of 23 million years. The star and its planet belong to Group 29, a yo ung association in the foreground of the Taurus-Auriga star-forming region. While hot Jupiters have been previously reported around young stars, those planets are non-transiting and near-term atmospheric characterization is not feasible. The V1298 Tau system is a compelling target for follow-up study through transmission spectroscopy and Doppler tomography owing to the transit depth (0.5%), host star brightness ($K_s$ = 8.1 mag), and rapid stellar rotation ($vsin{i}$ = 23 kms). Although the planet is Jupiter-sized, its mass is presently unknown due to high-amplitude radial velocity jitter. Nevertheless, V1298 Tau b may help constrain formation scenarios for at least one class of close-in exoplanets, providing a window into the nascent evolution of planetary interiors and atmospheres.

We report the discovery of blue-shifted metastable He I* absorption lines at 3188 A and 3889 A with multiple components on high-resolution spectra (R ~ 60,000) of V1280 Scorpii. Similar multiple absorption lines associated with Na I D doublet and Ca II H and K are observed. Na I D doublet absorption lines have been observed since 2009, while the metastable He I* absorption lines were absent in 2009 and were detected in 2011 (four years after the burst). We find different time variations in depths and velocities of blue-shifted absorption components among He I*, Na I, and Ca II. The complex time evolutions of these lines can be explained by assuming changes in density and recombination/ionization rate when the ejecta expand and the photosphere contracts to become hotter. The multiple absorption lines originate in the ejected materials consisting of clumpy components, which obscure a significant part of the continuum emitting region. We estimate the total mass of the ejected material to be on the order of ~ 10^{-4} Mo, using metastable He I* 3188 and 3889 absorption lines.
The extrasolar planetary system around HR 8799 is the first multiplanet system ever imaged. It is also, by a wide margin, the highest mass system with >27 Jupiters of planetary mass past 25 AU. This is a remarkable system with no analogue with any ot her known planetary system. In the first part of this paper we investigate the nature of two faint objects imaged near the system. These objects are considerably fainter (H=20.4, and 21.6 mag) and more distant (projected separations of 612, and 534 AU) than the three known planetary companions b, c, and d (68-24 AU). It is possible that these two objects could be lower mass planets (of mass ~5 and ~3 Jupiters) that have been scattered to wider orbits. We make the first direct comparison of newly reduced archival Gemini adaptive optics images to archival HST/NICMOS images. With nearly a decade between these epochs we can accurately assess the proper motion nature of each candidate companion. We find that both objects are unbound to HR 8799 and are background. We estimate that HR 8799 has no companions of H<22 from ~5-15 arcsec. Any scattered giant planets in the HR 8799 system are >600 AU or less than 3 Jupiters in mass. In the second part of this paper we carry out a search for wider common proper motion objects. While we identify no bound companions to HR 8799, our search yields 16 objects within 1 degree in the NOMAD catalog and POSS DSS images with similar (+/-20 mas/yr) proper motions to HR 8799, three of which warrant follow-up observations.
