Levitated optomechanical systems are rapidly becoming leading tools for precision sensing, enabling a high level of control over the sensors center of mass motion, rotation and electric charge state. Higher-order multipole moments in the charge distribution, however, remain a major source of backgrounds. By applying controlled precessive torques to the dipole moment of a levitated microsphere in vacuum, we demonstrate cancellation of dipole-induced backgrounds by 2 orders of magnitude. We measure the dipole moments of ng-mass spheres and determine their scaling with sphere size, finding that the dominant torques arise from induced dipole moments related to dielectric-loss properties of the SiO$_2$ spheres. Control of multipole moments in the charge distribution of levitated sensors is a key requirement to sufficiently reduce background sources in future applications.

We create fermionic dipolar $^{23}$Na$^6$Li molecules in their triplet ground state from an ultracold mixture of $^{23}$Na and $^6$Li. Using magneto-association across a narrow Feshbach resonance followed by a two-photon STIRAP transfer to the triple t ground state, we produce $3,{times},10^4$ ground state molecules in a spin-polarized state. We observe a lifetime of $4.6,text{s}$ in an isolated molecular sample, approaching the $p$-wave universal rate limit. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy of the triplet state was used to determine the hyperfine structure of this previously unobserved molecular state.
We report dispersive coupling of an optically trapped silica nanoparticle ($143~$nm diameter) to the field of a driven Fabry-Perot cavity in high vacuum ($4.3times 10^{-6}~$mbar). We demonstrate nanometer-level control in positioning the particle wit h respect to the intensity distribution of the cavity field, which allows access to linear, quadratic and tertiary optomechanical interactions in the resolved sideband regime. We determine all relevant coupling rates of the system, i.e. mechanical and optical losses as well as optomechanical interaction, and obtain a quantum cooperativity of $C_Q = 0.01$. Based on the presented performance the regime of strong cooperativity ($C_Q > 1$) is clearly within reach by further decreasing the mode volume of the cavity.
Postulating the existence of a fnite-mass mediator of T,P-odd coupling between atomic electrons and nucleons we consider its effect on permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of diamagnetic atoms. We present both numerical and analytical analysis for such mediator-induced EDMs and compare it with EDM results for the conventional contact interaction. Based on this analysis we derive limits on coupling strengths and carrier masses from experimental limits on EDM of 199Hg atom.
A detailed theory describing linear optics of vapors comprised of interacting multi-level quantum emitters is proposed. It is shown both by direct integration of Maxwell-Bloch equations and using a simple analytical model that at large densities narr ow transparency windows appear in otherwise completely opaque spectra. The existence of such windows is attributed to overlapping resonances. This effect, first introduced for three-level systems in [R. Puthumpally-Joseph, M. Sukharev, O. Atabek and E. Charron, Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 163603 (2014)], is due to strongly enhanced dipole-dipole interactions at high emitters densities. The presented theory extends this effect to the case of multilevel systems. The theory is applied to the D1 transitions of interacting Rb-85 atoms. It is shown that at high atomic densities, Rb-85 atoms can behave as three-level emitters exhibiting all the properties of dipole induced electromagnetic transparency. Applications including slow light and laser pulse shaping are also proposed.
The electric and magnetic dipole moments of dyon fermions are calculated within N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory including the theta-term. It is found, in particular, that the gyroelectric ratio deviates from the canonical value of 2 for the mono pole fermion (n_m=1,n_e=0) in the case theta ot=0. Then, applying the S-duality transformation to the result for the dyon fermions, we obtain an explicit prediction for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the charged fermion (`electron). It is thus seen that the approach presented here provides a novel method for computing the EDM induced by the theta-term.
