A Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillator (KPO) can stabilize a quantum superposition of two coherent states with opposite phases, which can be used as a qubit. In a universal gate set for quantum computation with KPOs, an $R_x$ gate, which interchanges the two coherent states, is relatively hard to perform owing to the stability of the two states. We propose a method for a high-fidelity $R_x$ gate by exciting the KPO outside the qubit space parity-selectively, which can be implemented by only adding a driving field. In this method, utilizing higher effective excited states leads to a faster $R_x$ gate, rather than states near the qubit space. The proposed method can realize a continuous $R_x$ gate, and thus is expected to be useful for, e.g., recently proposed variational quantum algorithms.

We theoretically propose a method for on-demand generation of traveling Schrodinger cat states, namely, quantum superpositions of distinct coherent states of traveling fields. This method is based on deterministic generation of intracavity cat states using a Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillator (KPO) via quantum adiabatic evolution. We show that the cat states generated inside a KPO can be released into an output mode by controlling the parametric pump amplitude dynamically. We further show that the quality of the traveling cat states can be improved by using a shortcut-to-adiabaticity technique.
Quantum Kerr-nonlinear oscillator is a paradigmatic model in cavity and circuit quantum electrodynamics, and quantum optomechanics. We theoretically study the echo phenomenon in a single impulsively excited (kicked) Kerr-nonlinear oscillator. We reve al two types of echoes, quantum and classical ones, emerging on the long and short time-scales, respectively. The mechanisms of the echoes are discussed, and their sensitivity to dissipation is considered. These echoes may be useful for studying decoherence processes in a number of systems related to quantum information processing.
We study microwave response of a Josephson parametric oscillator consisting of a superconducting transmission-line resonator with an embedded dc-SQUID. The dc-SQUID allows to control the magnitude of a Kerr nonlinearity over the ranges where it is sm aller or larger than the photon loss rate. Spectroscopy measurements reveal the change of the microwave response from a classical Duffing oscillator to a Kerr parametric oscillator in a single device. In the single-photon Kerr regime, we observe parametric oscillations with a well-defined phase of either $0$ or $pi$, whose probability can be controlled by an externally injected signal.

Quantum computers with Kerr-nonlinear parametric oscillators (KPOs) have recently been proposed by the author and others. Quantum computation using KPOs is based on quantum adiabatic bifurcations of the KPOs, which lead to quantum superpositions of c oherent states, such as Schrodinger cat states. Therefore, these quantum computers are referred to as quantum bifurcation machines (QbMs). QbMs can be used for qauntum adiabatic optimization and universal quantum computation. Superconducting circuits with Josephson junctions, Josephson parametric oscillators (JPOs) in particular, are promising for physical implementation of KPOs. Thus, KPOs and QbMs offer not only a new path toward the realization of quantum bits (qubits) and quantum computers, but also a new application of JPOs. Here we theoretically explain the physics of KPOs and QbMs, comparing them with their dissipative counterparts. Their physical implementations with superconducting circuits are also presented.
We present a heralded state preparation scheme for driven nonlinear open quantum systems. The protocol is based on a continuous photon counting measurement of the systems decay channel. When no photons are detected for a period of time, the system ha s relaxed to a measurement-induced pseudo-steady state. We illustrate the protocol by the creation of states with a negative Wigner function in a Kerr oscillator, a system whose unconditional steady state is strictly positive.
