We present redshifts for 2753 low-redshift galaxies between $0.03 lesssim z_{rm spec}lesssim0.5$ with 18 $leq$ $r$ $leq$ 22 obtained with Hectospec at the Multi-Mirror Telescope (MMT). The observations targeted the XMM-LSS, ELAIS-N1 and DEEP2-3 fields, each of which covers $sim$ 1 deg$^2$. These fields are also part of the recently completed CFHT Large Area U-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) and on-going Hyper Suprime-Cam deep fields surveys. The efficiency of our technique for selecting low-redshift galaxies is confirmed by the redshift distribution of our sources. In addition to redshifts, these high S/N spectra are used to measure ages, metallicities, and nuclear activity levels. In combination with the photometric catalogue in $u$, $g$, $r$, $i$, $z$, $y$ down to 27 AB mag, we are able to study the galaxy population down to stellar masses of $sim$ 10$^8 M_odot$ . This paper presents the observational strategy, the reduction procedure and properties of the galaxy sample.

We present the first results of an MMT/Hectospec campaign to measure the kinematics of globular clusters (GCs) around M49 -- the brightest galaxy in the Virgo galaxy cluster, which dominates the Virgo B subcluster. The data include kinematic tracers beyond 95 kpc (~5.2 effective radii) for M49 for the first time, enabling us to achieve three key insights reported here. First, beyond ~20-30 (~100-150 kpc), the GC kinematics sampled along the minor photometric axis of M49 become increasingly hotter, indicating a transition from GCs related to M49 to those representing the Virgo B intra-cluster medium. Second, there is an anomaly in the line-of-sight radial velocity dispersion ($sigma_{r,los}$) profile in an annulus ~10-15 (~50-90 kpc) from M49 in which the kinematics cool by $Delta sigma_{r,los}~150$ km s$^{-1}$ relative to those in- or outward. The kinematic fingerprint of a previous accretion event is hinted at in projected phase-space, and we isolate GCs that both give rise to this feature, and are spatially co-located with two prominent stellar shells in the halo of M49. Third, we find a subsample of GCs with velocities representative of the dwarf galaxy VCC1249 that is currently interacting with M49. The spatial distribution of these GCs closely resembles the morphology of VCC1249s isophotes, indicating that several of these GCs are likely in the act of being stripped from the dwarf during its passage through M49s halo. Taken together, these results point toward the opportunity of witnessing on-going giant halo assembly in the depths of a cluster environment.

We present a spectroscopic survey using the MMT/Hectospec fiber spectrograph of 24 micron sources selected with the Spitzer Space Telescope in the Spitzer First Look Survey. We report 1296 new redshifts for 24 micron sources, including 599 with f(24m icron) > 1 mJy. Combined with 291 additional redshifts for sources from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), our observing program was highly efficient and is ~90% complete for i < 21 mag and f(24micron) > 1 mJy, and is 35% complete for i < 20.5 mag and 0.3 mJy < f(24micron) < 1 mJy. Our Hectospec survey includes 1078 and 168 objects spectroscopically classified as galaxies and QSOs, respectively. Combining the Hectospec and SDSS samples, we find 24 micron-selected galaxies to z < 0.98 and QSOs to z < 3.6, with mean redshifts of <z(gal)> = 0.27 and <z(QSO)> =1.1. As part of this publication, we include the redshift catalogs and the reduced spectra; these are also available online (http://mips.as.arizona.edu/~papovich/fls) and through the NASA/IPAC Infrared Science Archive (http://irsa.ipac.caltech.edu).

We obtained SMA observations of eight faint (intrinsic 850 $mu$m fluxes $<$ 2 mJy) submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) discovered in SCUBA images of the massive lensing cluster fields A370, A2390, and A1689 and detected five. In total, we obtain 5 SMA dete ctions, all of which have de-lensed fluxes $<$1 mJy with estimated total infrared luminosities 10$^{10}-10^{12}$ $L_odot$, comparable to luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) and normal star-forming galaxies. Based on the latest number counts, these galaxies contribute $sim$70% of the 850 $mu$m extragalactic background light and represent the dominant star-forming galaxy population in the dusty universe. However, only 40$^{+30}_{-16}$% of our faint SMGs would be detected in deep optical or near-infrared surveys, which suggests many of these sources are at high redshifts ($z gtrsim 3$) or extremely dusty, and they are not included in current star formation history estimates.

We present observations with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope of five star-forming galaxies at redshifts z in the range 0.2993-0.4317 and with high emission-line flux ratios O32=[OIII]5007/[OII]3727 ~ 8-27 aiming to detect the Lyman continuum (LyC) emission. We detect LyC emission in all galaxies with the escape fractions fesc(LyC) in a range of 2-72 per cent. A narrow Ly-alpha emission line with two peaks in four galaxies and with three peaks in one object is seen in medium-resolution COS spectra with a velocity separation between the peaks Vsep varying from ~153 km/s to ~345 km/s. We find a general increase of the LyC escape fraction with increasing O32 and decreasing stellar mass M*, but with a large scatter of fesc(LyC). A tight anti-correlation is found between fesc(LyC) and Vsep making Vsep a good parameter for the indirect determination of the LyC escape fraction. We argue that one possible source driving the escape of ionizing radiation is stellar winds and radiation from hot massive stars.
We compare the relations among various integrated characteristics of ~25,000 low-redshift (z<1.0) compact star-forming galaxies (CSFGs) from Data Release 16 (DR16) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and of high-redshift (z>1.5) star-forming galax ies (SFGs) with respect to oxygen abundances, stellar masses M*, far-UV absolute magnitudes M(FUV), star-formation rates SFR and specific star-formation rates sSFR, Lyman-continuum photon production efficiencies (xi_ion), UV continuum slopes beta, [OIII]5007/[OII]3727 and [NeIII]3868/[OII]3727 ratios, and emission-line equivalent widths EW([OII]3727), EW([OIII]5007), and EW(Halpha). We find that the relations for low-z CSFGs with high equivalent widths of the Hbeta emission line, EW(Hbeta)>100A, and high-z SFGs are very similar, implying close physical properties in these two categories of galaxies. Thus, CSFGs are likely excellent proxies for the SFGs in the high-z Universe. They also extend to galaxies with lower stellar masses, down to ~10^6 Msun, and to absolute FUV magnitudes as faint as -14 mag. Thanks to their proximity, CSFGs can be studied in much greater detail than distant SFGs. Therefore, the relations between the integrated characteristics of the large sample of CSFGs studied here can prove very useful for our understanding of high-z dwarf galaxies in future observations with large ground-based and space telescopes.
