LIN 358 and SMC N73 are two symbiotic binaries in the halo of the Small Magellanic Cloud, each composed of a hot white dwarf accreting from a cool giant companion. In this work, we characterize these systems using a combination of SED-fitting to the extant photometric data spanning a broad wavelength range (X-ray/ultraviolet to near-infrared), detailed analysis of the APOGEE spectra for the giant stars, and orbit fitting to high quality radial velocities from the APOGEE database. Using the calculated Roche lobe radius for the giant component and the mass ratio for each system, it is found that LIN 358 is likely undergoing mass transfer via wind Roche lobe overflow while the accretion mechanism for SMC N73 remains uncertain. This work presents the first orbital characterization for both of these systems (yielding periods of >270 and >980 days, respectively, for SMC N73 and LIN 358) and the first global SED fitting for SMC N73. In addition, variability was identified in APOGEE spectra of LIN 358 spanning 17 epochs over two years that may point to a time variable accretion rate as the product of an eccentric orbit.

Symbiotic binaries are long period interacting binaries consisting of a white dwarf (WD) accreting material from a cool evolved giant star via stellar winds. In this paper we study the symbiotic binary LIN 358 located in the SMC. We have observed LIN 358 with the integral field spectrograph WiFeS and obtained its line emission spectrum. With the help of the plasma simulation and spectral synthesis code Cloudy, we have constructed a 2D photo-ionisation model of LIN 358. From comparison with the observations, we have determined the colour temperature of the WD in LIN 358 to be 19 eV, its bolometric luminosity $L = (1.02 pm 0.15) times 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and the mass-loss rate from the donor star to be $ 1.2 times 10^{-6}$ M$_{odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. Assuming a solar H to He ratio in the wind material, a lower limit to the accreted mass fraction in LIN 358 is 0.31. The high mass-accretion efficiency of a wind Roche lobe overflow implies that the WD is accreting above the upper boundary of stable hydrogen fusion and thus growing in mass with the maximal rate of $approx 4 times 10^{-7}$ M$_{odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. This causes the WD photosphere to expand, which explains its low colour temperature. Our calculations show that the circumstellar material in LIN 358 is nearly completely ionized except for a narrow cone around the donor star, and that the WD emission is freely escaping the system. However, due to its low colour temperature, this emission can be easily attenuated by even moderate amounts of neutral ISM. We speculate that other symbiotic systems may be operating in a similar regime, thus explaining the paucity of observed systems.
We have initiated a survey aimed at locating a nearly complete sample of classical symbiotic stars (SySt) in the Magellanic Clouds. Such a sample is nearly impossible to obtain in the Milky Way, and is essential to constrain the formation, evolution and demise of these strongly interacting, evolved binary stars. We have imaged both Clouds in Halpha and He II 4686 narrow-band filters deeply enough to detect all known symbiotic stars. While He II 4686 is not present in all SySt, our method should yield a high success rate because the mimics of SySt are not as likely as true symbiotics to show this emission line. We demonstrate the viability of our method through the discovery and characterization of three new SySt in the Small Magellanic Cloud: 2MASS J00411657-7233253, 2MASS J01104404-7208464 and 2MASS J01113745-7159023. Enigmatic variability was observed in 2MASS J01113745-7159023, where changes in the amplitude of its quasi-periodic variability may suggest an enhanced mass transfer rate during a periastron passage on an elliptical orbit. 2MASS J01104404-7208464 is an ellipsoidal variable with an orbital period of 403d.

MASYS is the AKARI spectroscopic survey of Symbiotic Stars in the Magellanic Clouds, and one of the European Open Time Observing Programmes approved for the AKARI (Post-Helium) Phase-3. It is providing the first ever near-IR spectra of extragalactic symbiotic stars. The observations are scheduled to be completed in July 2009.

Any white dwarf or neutron star that accretes enough material from a red giant companion, such that this interaction can be detected at some wavelength, is currently termed Symbiotic Star (typical P(orb)=2-3 years). In the majority of ~400 known syst ems, the WD burns nuclearly at its surface the accreted material, and the resulting high temperature (T(eff)=10(^5)~K) and luminosity (L(hot)=10(^3)-10(^4) Lsun) allow ionization of a large fraction of the cool giants wind, making such symbiotic stars easily recognizable through the whole Galaxy and across the Local Group. X-ray observations are now revealing the existence of a parallel (and larger ?) population of optically-quiet, accreting-only symbiotic stars. Accretion flows and disks, ionization fronts and shock, complex 3D geometries and new evolution channels are gaining relevance and are reshaping our understanding of symbiotic stars. We review the different types of symbiotic stars currently in the family and their variegated outburst behaviors through an unified evolution scheme connecting them all.

We show that if a planar graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $3$ has positive Lin-Lu-Yau Ricci curvature on every edge, then $Delta(G)leq 17$, which then implies that $G$ is finite. This is an analogue of a result of DeVos and Mohar [{em Trans. Am er. Math. Soc., 2007}] on the size of planar graphs with positive combinatorial curvature.
