What happens to the QCD vacuum when a time-periodic circularly polarized laser field with a sufficiently large intensity and frequency is applied? Based on the Floquet formalism for periodically driven systems and the systematic low-energy effective theory of QCD, we show that for a sufficiently large frequency and above a critical intensity, the QCD vacuum is unstable against the chiral soliton lattice of pions, a crystalline structure of topological solitons that spontaneously breaks parity and continuous translational symmetries. In the chiral limit, in particular, the QCD vacuum is found unstable by the laser with an arbitrary small intensity. Our work would pave the way for novel Floquet vacuum engineering.

We analyze the phase diagram of quantum chromodynamics at low-to-moderate temperature, baryon chemical potential and external magnetic field within chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order of the derivative expansion. Our main result is th at the anomaly-induced chiral soliton lattice (CSL) phase is stabilized by thermal fluctuations. As a consequence, the CSL state may survive up to temperatures at which chiral symmetry is restored.
We analyze the chiral symmetries of flavored quantum chromodynamics in two dimensions and show the existence of chiral condensates within the path-integral approach. The massless and massive cases are discussed as well, for arbitrary finite and infin ite number of colors. Our results put forward the question of topological issues when matter is in the fundamental representation of the gauge group.
We propose a practical way of circumventing the sign problem in lattice QCD simulations with a theta-vacuum term. This method is the reweighting method for the QCD Lagrangian after the chiral transformation. In the Lagrangian, the P-odd mass term as a cause of the sign problem is minimized. Additionally, we investigate theta-vacuum effects on the QCD phase diagram for the realistic 2+1 flavor system, using the three-flavor Polyakov-extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model and the entanglement PNJL model as an extension of the PNJL model. The theta-vacuum effects make the chiral transition sharper. We finally investigate theta dependence of the transition temperature and compare with the result of the pure gauge lattice simulation with imaginary theta parameter.
The QCD coupling appears in the perturbative expansion of the current-current two-point (vacuum polarization) function. Any lattice calculation of vacuum polarization is plagued by several competing non-perturbative effects at small momenta and by di scretization errors at large momenta. We work in an intermediate region, computing the vacuum polarization for many off-axis momentum directions on the lattice. Having many momentum directions provides a way to monitor and account for lattice artifacts. Our results are competitive with, and have certain systematic advantages over, the alternate phenomenological determination of the strong coupling from the same light quark vacuum polarization produced by sum rule analyses of hadronic tau decay data.

Topology in momentum space is the main characteristics of the ground states of a system at zero temperature, the quantum vacua. The gaplessness of fermions in bulk, on the surface or inside the vortex core is protected by topology. Irrespective of th e deformation of the parameters of the microscopic theory, the energy spectrum of these fermions remains strictly gapless. This solves the main hierarchy problem in particle physics. The quantum vacuum of Standard Model is one of the representatives of topological matter alongside with topological superfluids and superconductors, topological insulators and semi-metals, etc. There is a number of of topological invariants in momentum space of different dimensions. They determine universality classes of the topological matter and the type of the effective theory which emerges at low energy, give rise to emergent symmetries, including the effective Lorentz invariance, and emergent gauge and gravitational fields. The topological invariants in extended momentum and coordinate space determine the bulk-surface and bulk-vortex correspondence, connecting the topology in bulk with the real space. The momentum space topology gives some lessons for quantum gravity. In effective gravity emerging at low energy, the collective variables are the tetrad field and spin connections, while the metric is the composite object of tetrad field. This suggests that the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory with torsion field is more relevant. There are also several scenarios of Lorentz invariance violation governed by topology, including splitting of Fermi point and development of the Dirac points with quadratic and cubic spectrum. The latter leads to the natural emergence of the Horava-Lifshitz gravity.
