Conventional uplink equalization in massive MIMO systems relies on a centralized baseband processing architecture. However, as the number of base station antennas increases, centralized baseband processing architectures encounter two bottlenecks, i.e., the tremendous data interconnection and the high-dimensional computation. To tackle these obstacles, decentralized baseband processing was proposed for uplink equalization, but only applicable to the scenarios with unpractical white Gaussian noise assumption. This paper presents an uplink linear minimum mean-square error (L-MMSE) equalization method in the daisy chain decentralized baseband processing architecture under colored noise assumption. The optimized L-MMSE equalizer is derived by exploiting the block coordinate descent method, which shows near-optimal performance both in theoretical and simulation while significantly mitigating the bottlenecks.

Algorithms for Massive MIMO uplink detection typically rely on a centralized approach, by which baseband data from all antennas modules are routed to a central node in order to be processed. In case of Massive MIMO, where hundreds or thousands of ant ennas are expected in the base-station, this architecture leads to a bottleneck, with critical limitations in terms of interconnection bandwidth requirements. This paper presents a fully decentralized architecture and algorithms for Massive MIMO uplink based on recursive methods, which do not require a central node for the detection process. Through a recursive approach and very low complexity operations, the proposed algorithms provide a sequence of estimates that converge asymptotically to the zero-forcing solution, without the need of specific hardware for matrix inversion. The proposed solution achieves significantly lower interconnection data-rate than other architectures, enabling future scalability.

We propose an uplink massive MIMO system using an array of holographic metasurfaces as a sector antenna. The antenna consists of a set of rectangular waveguide-fed metasurfaces combined along the elevation direction into a planar aperture, each with subwavelength-sized metamaterial elements as radiators. The metamaterial radiators are designed such that the waveguide-fed metasurface implements a holographic solution for the guided (or reference) mode, generating a fan beam towards a prescribed direction, thereby forming a multibeam antenna system. We demonstrate that a narrowband uplink massive MIMO system using the metasurfaces can achieve the sum capacity close to that offered by the Rayleigh channel at 3.5 GHz. We show that metasurfaces supporting multiple fan beams can achieve high spatial resolution in the azimuth directions in sub-6 GHz channels, and thereby form uncorrelated MIMO channels between the base station and users. Also, the proposed metasurface antenna is structurally simple, low-cost, and efficient, and thus is suitable to alleviate RF hardware issues common to massive MIMO systems equipped with a large antenna system.
Algorithms for Massive MIMO uplink detection and downlink precoding typically rely on a centralized approach, by which baseband data from all antenna modules are routed to a central node in order to be processed. In the case of Massive MIMO, where hu ndreds or thousands of antennas are expected in the base-station, said routing becomes a bottleneck since interconnection throughput is limited. This paper presents a fully decentralized architecture and an algorithm for Massive MIMO uplink detection and downlink precoding based on the Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) method, which does not require a central node for these tasks. Through a recursive approach and very low complexity operations, the proposed algorithm provides a good trade-off between performance, interconnection throughput and latency. Further, our proposed solution achieves significantly lower interconnection data-rate than other architectures, enabling future scalability.
Both the power-dissipation and cost of massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) systems may be substantially reduced by using low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (LADCs) at the receivers. However, both the coarse quantization of LADCs a nd the inaccurate instantaneous channel state information (ICSI) degrade the performance of quantized mMIMO systems. To overcome these challenges, we propose a novel stochastic hybrid analog-digital combiner (SHC) scheme for adapting the hybrid combiner to the long-term statistics of the channel state information (SCSI). We seek to minimize the transmit power by jointly optimizing the SHC subject to average rate constraints. For the sake of solving the resultant nonconvex stochastic optimization problem, we develop a relaxed stochastic successive convex approximation (RSSCA) algorithm. Simulations are carried out to confirm the benefits of our proposed scheme over the benchmarkers.
In this paper, the bit error rate (BER) performance of spatial modulation (SM) systems is investigated both theoretically and by simulation in a non-stationary Kronecker-based massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channel model in multi-user (MU) scenarios. Massive MIMO SM systems are considered in this paper using both a time-division multiple access (TDMA) scheme and a block diagonalization (BD) based precoding scheme, for different system settings. Their performance is compared with a vertical Bell labs layered space-time (V-BLAST) architecture based system and a conventional channel inversion system. It is observed that a higher cluster evolution factor can result in better BER performance of SM systems due to the low correlation among sub-channels. Compared with the BD-SM system, the SM system using the TDMA scheme obtains a better BER performance but with a much lower total system data rate. The BD-MU-SM system achieves the best trade-off between the data rate and the BER performance among all of the systems considered. When compared with the V-BLAST system and the channel inversion system, SM approaches offer advantages in performance for MU massive MIMO systems.
