Waves dissipate energy when they propagate through real medium. Theoretical study of waves is one of important way to understand the nature of waves in medium with dissipation. The study points out that the theoretical solution to the wave equation describing a disturbance propagating in a dissipative medium is not unique, which is determined by the dissipation mechanism of the medium. A new general solution is proposed by assuming that the attenuations of disturbance can occur in the time and space domains. The general solution is further used in case studies. The properties of viscoelastic waves propagating in the Kelvin-Voigt medium and electromagnetic waves propagating in conductive medium with the reciprocal attenuation in time and space domains are analyzed. The result shows that the attenuation mechanism has an obvious influence on the properties of waves in the dissipative medium when the wave equations are the same.

The time reversal symmetry of the wave equation allows wave refocusing back at the source. However, this symmetry does not hold in lossy media. We present a new strategy to compensate wave amplitude losses due to attenuation. The strategy leverages t he instantaneous time mirror (ITM) which generates reversed waves by a sudden disruption of the medium properties. We create a heterogeneous ITM whose disruption is unequal throughout the space to create waves of different amplitude. The time-reversed waves can then cope with different attenuation paths as typically seen in heterogeneous and lossy environments. We consider an environment with biological tissues and apply the strategy to a two-dimensional digital human phantom from the abdomen. A stronger disruption is introduced where forward waves suffer a history of higher attenuation, with a weaker disruption elsewhere. Computer simulations show heterogeneous ITM is a promising technique to improve time reversal refocusing in heterogeneous, lossy, and dispersive spaces.

Experimental results and their interpretations are presented on the nonlinear acoustic effects of multiple scattered elastic waves in unconsolidated granular media. Short wave packets with a central frequency higher than the so-called cut-off frequen cy of the medium are emitted at one side of the statically stressed slab of glass beads and received at the other side after multiple scattering and nonlinear interactions. Typical signals are strongly distorted compared to their initially radiated shape both due to nonlinearity and scattering. It is shown that acoustic waves with a deformation amplitude much lower than the mean static deformation of the contacts in the medium can modify the elastic properties of the medium, especially for the weak contact skeleton part. This addresses the problem of reproducibility of granular structures during and after acoustic excitation, which is necessary to understand in the non destructive testing of the elastic properties of granular media by acoustic methods. Coda signal analysis is shown to be a powerful time-resolved tool to monitor slight modifications in the elastic response of an unconsolidated granular structure.
Heterogeneity can be accounted for by a random potential in the wave equation. For acoustic waves in a fluid with fluctuations of both density and compressibility (as well as for electromagnetic waves in a medium with fluctuation of both permittivity and permeability) the random potential entails a scalar and an operator contribution. For simplicity, the latter is usually overlooked in multiple scattering theory: whatever the type of waves, this simplification amounts to considering the Helmholtz equation with a sound speed $c$ depending on position $mathbf{r}$. In this work, a radiative transfer equation is derived from the wave equation, in order to study energy transport through a multiple scattering medium. In particular, the influence of the operator term on various transport parameters is studied, based on the diagrammatic approach of multiple scattering. Analytical results are obtained for fundamental quantities of transport theory such as the transport mean-free path $ell^*$, scattering phase function $f$ and anisotropy factor $g$. Discarding the operator term in the wave equation is shown to have a significant impact on $f$ and $g$, yet limited to the low-frequency regime i.e., when the correlation length of the disorder $ell_c$ is smaller than or comparable to the wavelength $lambda$. More surprisingly, discarding the operator part has a significant impact on the transport mean-free path $ell^*$ whatever the frequency regime. When the scalar and operator terms have identical amplitudes, the discrepancy on the transport mean-free path is around $300,%$ in the low-frequency regime, and still above $30,%$ for $ell_c/lambda=10^3$ no matter how weak fluctuations of the disorder are. Analytical results are supported by numerical simulations of the wave equation and Monte Carlo simulations.
A low loss propagating electromagnetic wave is shown to exist at a gradual interface between two lossy conductive media. The electromagnetic frequency range of this phenomenon may span from UV optics to RF range. In particular, it is demonstrated tha t such a surface wave may be guided by a seafloor-seawater interface and it may be used in radio communication and imaging underwater. Similar surface waves may also be guided by various tissue boundaries inside a human body. For example, such surface wave solutions may exist at planar interfaces between skull bones and grey matter inside a human head at 6 GHz.
We show that there exists an exact solution for a lossless and reciprocal periodic surface impedance which ensures full conversion of a single-mode surface wave propagating along the impedance boundary to a single plane wave propagating along a desir ed direction in free space above the boundary. In contrast to known realizations of leaky-wave antennas, the optimal surface reactance modulation which is found here ensures the absence of evanescent higher-order modes of the Floquet wave expansion of fields near the radiating surface. Thus, all the energy carried by the surface wave is used for launching the single inhomogeneous plane wave into space, without accumulation of reactive energy in higher-order modes. The results of the study are expected to be useful for creation of leaky-wave antennas with the ultimate efficiency, and, moreover, can potentially lead to novel applications, from microwaves to nanophotonics.
