Open heavy flavor and quarkonium are unique probes of the hot-dense medium produced in heavy-ion collisions. Their production in p+p collisions also provide important test of QCD. In this paper, we review the selected results on open heavy flavor and quarkonium in p+p and heavy-ion collisions achieved at RHIC. Physics implications are also discussed.

Quarkonium has been proposed as a sensitive probe of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) more than thirty years ago. Since then, lots of experimental efforts have been devoted to study its production in heavy-ion collisions to search for QGP and study its prope rties and significant progresses have been made. In this paper, an overview of recent experimental results on charmonium and bottomonium production in heavy-ion collisions as well as in small systems are presented. Furthermore, the results on exotic particle X(3872) production in Pb+Pb and p+p collisions are also discussed.

Flow measurements of multi-strange baryons from Au + Au collisions at RHIC energies demonstrate that collectivity develops before hadronization, among partons. To pin down the partonic EOS of matter produced at RHIC, the status of thermalization in s uch collisions has to be addressed. We propose to measure collective flow of heavy-flavor quarks, e.g. charm quarks, as an indicator of thermalization of light flavors ($u,d,s$). The completion of the time of flight barrel and the proposed upgrade with a $mu$Vertex detector for heavy-flavor identification in STAR are well suited for achieving these goals.

In this report, we present the measurements of open charm production at mid-rapidity in p+p, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies. The techniques of direct reconstruction of open charm via its hadronic decay and indirect measurements through i ts semileptonic decay are discussed. The beam energy dependence of total charm cross section, electron pt spectra, and their comparisons to theoretical calculations, including NLO pQCD, are presented. The electron spectra in p+p, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions at srt=200 GeV show significant variation. The open charm absolute cross section at midrapidity and its centrality dependence are compared to those of inclusive hadrons integrated over $p_{T}>1.5$ GeV/c.

The ultra-relativistic heavy-ion programs at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider have evolved into a phase of quantitative studies of Quantum Chromodynamics at very high temperatures. The charm and bottom hadron producti on offer unique insights into the remarkable transport properties and the microscopic structure of the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) created in these collisions. Heavy quarks, due to their large masses, undergo Brownian motion at low momentum, provide a window on hadronization mechanisms at intermediate momenta, and are expected to merge into a radiative-energy loss regime at high momentum. We review recent experimental and theoretical achievements on measuring a variety of heavy-flavor observables, characterizing the different regimes in momentum, extracting pertinent transport coefficients and deducing implications for the inner workings of the QGP medium.

A review on experimental results for direct photon production in heavy ion reactions is given. A brief survey of early direct photon limits from SPS experiments is presented. The first measurement of direct photons in heavy ion reactions from the WA9 8 collaboration is discussed and compared to theoretical calculations. An outlook on the perspective of photon measurements at RHIC is given.
