We propose a nonlinear fiber system for shot-noise limited, all-optical intensity-noise reduction and signal amplification. The mechanism is based on the accumulation of different nonlinear phase shifts between orthogonal polarization modes in a polarization-maintaining fiber amplifier in combination with an implemented sinusoidal transmission-function. The resulting correlation between the input intensity-fluctuations and the system transmission enables tunable intensity noise reduction of the input pulse train. In the experiment, the noise spectral density of a mode-locked oscillator is suppressed by up to ~20 dB to the theoretical shot-noise limit of the measurement at -151.3 dBc/Hz with simultaneous pulse amplification of 13.5dB.

In this work, we investigate the steady-states of a fiber lasers mode-locked with a nonlinear amplifying loop-mirror that has an inherent amplitude noise-suppression mechanism. Due to the interaction of the sinusoidal transmission function with the f luctuating intracavity pulse amplitude we show that this mechanism may lead to a detectable difference in relative intensity noise at the reflected and transmitted output port under specific preconditions. We present systematic intensity noise measurements with a nonlinear fiber-based system that replicates a single roundtrip in the laser cavity. Experimental results and simulations clearly show a reduction of the intracavity amplitude fluctuations up to 4 dB for certain steady-states.
We report on the design and whole characterization of low-noise and affordable-cost Yb-doped double-clad fiber amplifiers operating at room temperature in the near-infrared spectral region at pulse repetition rate of 160 MHz. Two different experiment al configurations are discussed. In the first one, a broadband seed radiation with a transform limited pulse duration of 71 fs, an optical spectrum of 20 nm wide at around 1040 nm, and 20 mW average power is adopted. In the second configuration, the seed radiation is constituted by stretched pulses with a time duration as long as 170 ps, with a 5-nm narrow pulse spectrum centered at 1029 nm and 2 mW average input power. In both cases we obtained transform limited pulse trains with an amplified output power exceeding 2 W. Furthermore, relative intensity noise measurements show that no significant noise degradation occurs during the amplification process.
We use hollow-core fibre to preserve the spectrum and temporal profile of picosecond laser pulses in CBD to suppress 2.6 dB of amplitude noise at MHz noise frequencies, to within 0.01 dB of the shot-noise limit. We provide an enhanced version of the CBD scheme that concatenates circuits to suppress over multiple frequencies and over broad frequency ranges --- we perform a first demonstration that reduces total excess amplitude noise, between 2 - 6 MHz, by 85%. These demonstrations enable passive, broad-band, all-guided fibre laser technology operating at the shot-noise limit.
We introduce modeling and simulation of the noise properties associated with types of modal oscillations induced by scaling the asymmetric gain suppression (AGS) in multimode semiconductor lasers. The study is based on numerical integration of a syst em of rate equations of 21-oscillating modes taking account of the self- and cross-modal gain suppression mechanisms. AGS is varied in terms of a pre-defined parameter, which is controlled by the linewidth enhancement factor and differential gain. Basing on intensive simulation of the mode dynamics, we present a mapping (AGS versus current) diagram of the possible types of modal oscillations. When the laser oscillation is hopping multimode oscillation (HMMO), the spectra of relative intensity noise (RIN) of the total output and hopping modes are characterized by a sharp peak around the relaxation oscillation (RO) frequency and a broad peak around the hopping frequency. The levels of RIN in the regimes of single-mode oscillation (SMO) are much lower than those under HMMO, and the mode-partition noise is two order of magnitudes lower.
We have measured the shot noise in a quantum point contact (QPC) fabricated by using InGaAs/InGaAsP heterostructure, whose conductance can be electrically tuned by the gate voltages. The reduced shot noise is observed when the QPC conductance equals to N(2e^2/h) (N=4, 5, and 6), which is the direct experimental evidence of the coherent quantized channel formation in the QPC. The deviation of the observed Fano factor from the theory is explained by the electron heating effect generated at the QPC.
