We consider scenarios where a ground vehicle plans its path using data gathered by an aerial vehicle. In the aerial images, navigable areas of the scene may be occluded due to obstacles. Naively planning paths using aerial images may result in longer paths as a conservative planner may try to avoid regions that are occluded. We propose a modular, deep learning-based framework that allows the robot to predict the existence of navigable areas in the occluded regions. Specifically, we use image inpainting methods to fill in parts of the areas that are potentially occluded, which can then be semantically segmented to determine navigability. We use supervised neural networks for both modules. However, these predictions may be incorrect. Therefore, we extract uncertainty in these predictions and use a risk-aware approach that takes these uncertainties into account for path planning. We compare modules in our approach with non-learning-based approaches to show the efficacy of the proposed framework through photo-realistic simulations. The modular pipeline allows further improvement in path planning and deployment in different settings.

This paper presents a novel algorithm, called $epsilon^*$+, for online coverage path planning of unknown environments using energy-constrained autonomous vehicles. Due to limited battery size, the energy-constrained vehicles have limited duration of operation time. Therefore, while executing a coverage trajectory, the vehicle has to return to the charging station for a recharge before the battery runs out. In this regard, the $epsilon^*$+ algorithm enables the vehicle to retreat back to the charging station based on the remaining energy which is monitored throughout the coverage process. This is followed by an advance trajectory that takes the vehicle to a near by unexplored waypoint to restart the coverage process, instead of taking it back to the previous left over point of the retreat trajectory; thus reducing the overall coverage time. The proposed $epsilon^*$+ algorithm is an extension of the $epsilon^*$ algorithm, which utilizes an Exploratory Turing Machine (ETM) as a supervisor to navigate the vehicle with back and forth trajectory for complete coverage. The performance of the $epsilon^*$+ algorithm is validated on complex scenarios using Player/Stage which is a high-fidelity robotic simulator.
Collision avoidance is an essential concern for the autonomous operations of aerial vehicles in dynamic and uncertain urban environments. This paper introduces a risk-bounded path planning algorithm for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operating in su ch environments. This algorithm advances the rapidly-exploring random tree (RRT) with chance constraints to generate probabilistically guaranteed collision-free paths that are robust to vehicle and environmental obstacle uncertainties. Assuming all uncertainties follow Gaussian distributions, the chance constraints are established through converting dynamic and probabilistic constraints into equivalent static and deterministic constraints. By incorporating chance constraints into the RRT algorithm, the proposed algorithm not only inherits the computational advantage of sampling-based algorithms but also guarantees a probabilistically feasible flying zone at every time step. Simulation results show the promising performance of the proposed algorithm.
For autonomous vehicles integrating onto roadways with human traffic participants, it requires understanding and adapting to the participants intention and driving styles by responding in predictable ways without explicit communication. This paper pr oposes a reinforcement learning based negotiation-aware motion planning framework, which adopts RL to adjust the driving style of the planner by dynamically modifying the prediction horizon length of the motion planner in real time adaptively w.r.t the event of a change in environment, typically triggered by traffic participants switch of intents with different driving styles. The framework models the interaction between the autonomous vehicle and other traffic participants as a Markov Decision Process. A temporal sequence of occupancy grid maps are taken as inputs for RL module to embed an implicit intention reasoning. Curriculum learning is employed to enhance the training efficiency and the robustness of the algorithm. We applied our method to narrow lane navigation in both simulation and real world to demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the common alternative due to its advantage in alleviating the social dilemma problem with proper negotiation skills.
The ability to develop a high-level understanding of a scene, such as perceiving danger levels, can prove valuable in planning multi-robot search and rescue (SaR) missions. In this work, we propose to uniquely leverage natural language descriptions f rom the mission commander in chief and image data captured by robots to estimate scene danger. Given a description and an image, a state-of-the-art deep neural network is used to assess a corresponding similarity score, which is then converted into a probabilistic distribution of danger levels. Because commonly used visio-linguistic datasets do not represent SaR missions well, we collect a large-scale image-description dataset from synthetic images taken from realistic disaster scenes and use it to train our machine learning model. A risk-aware variant of the Multi-robot Efficient Search Path Planning (MESPP) problem is then formulated to use the danger estimates in order to account for high-risk locations in the environment when planning the searchers paths. The problem is solved via a distributed approach based on Mixed-Integer Linear Programming. Our experiments demonstrate that our framework allows to plan safer yet highly successful search missions, abiding to the two most important aspects of SaR missions: to ensure both searchers and victim safety.
Target search with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is relevant problem to many scenarios, e.g., search and rescue (SaR). However, a key challenge is planning paths for maximal search efficiency given flight time constraints. To address this, we propo se the Obstacle-aware Adaptive Informative Path Planning (OA-IPP) algorithm for target search in cluttered environments using UAVs. Our approach leverages a layered planning strategy using a Gaussian Process (GP)-based model of target occupancy to generate informative paths in continuous 3D space. Within this framework, we introduce an adaptive replanning scheme which allows us to trade off between information gain, field coverage, sensor performance, and collision avoidance for efficient target detection. Extensive simulations show that our OA-IPP method performs better than state-of-the-art planners, and we demonstrate its application in a realistic urban SaR scenario.
