Twisted atomic bilayers are emerging platforms for manipulating chiral light-matter interaction at the extreme nanoscale, due to their inherent magnetoelectric responses induced by the finite twist angle and quantum interlayer coupling between the atomic layers. Recent studies have reported the direct correspondence between twisted atomic bilayers and chiral metasurfaces, which features a chiral surface conductivity, in addition to the electric and magnetic surface conductivities. However, far-field chiral optics in light of these consitututive conductivities remains unexplored. Within the framework of the full Maxwell equations, we find that the chiral surface conductivity can be exploited to realize perfect polarization transformation between linearly polarized light. Remarkably, such an exotic chiral phenomenon can occur either for the reflected or transmitted light.

Topological photonic structures exhibit chiral edge states that are robust to disorder and sharp bends. When coupled to quantum emitters, these edge states generate directional light emission that enables unprecedented control of interactions between light and matter in a nanophotonic device. While directional light emission in one-dimensional topological, as well as conventional, waveguides has been previously demonstrated, the extension of these concepts to resonator structures that enhance light-matter coupling remains challenging. Here we demonstrate chiral lightmatter interactions in a topological resonator. We employ valley-Hall topological edge states to realize a helical resonator at the interface of two topologically distinct regions. Such a helical resonator has two counter-propagating modes with opposite polarizations. We show chiral coupling of the resonator to a quantum emitter resulting in a Purcell enhancement of 3.4 due to resonant coupling. Such chiral resonators could enable designing complex nanophotonic circuits for quantum information processing, and studying novel quantum many-body dynamics.
The distinction of chiral and mirror symmetric objects is straightforward from a geometrical point of view. Since the biological as well as the optical activity of molecules strongly depend on their handedness, chirality has recently attracted high i nterest in the field of nano-optics. Various aspects of associated phenomena including the influences of internal and external degrees of freedom on the optical response have been discussed. Here, we propose a constructive method to evaluate the possibility of observing any chiral response from an optical scatterer. Based on solely the T-matrix of one enantiomer, planes of minimal chiral response are located and compared to geometric mirror planes. This provides insights into the relation of geometric and optical properties and enables identifying the potential of chiral scatterers for nano-optical experiments.
Quantum optics and classical optics have coexisted for nearly a century as two distinct, self-consistent descriptions of light. What influences there were between the two domains all tended to go in one direction, as concepts from classical optics we re incorporated into quantum theorys early development. But its becoming increasingly clear that a significant quantum presence exists in classical territory-and, in particular, that the quintessential quantum attribute, entanglement, can be seen, studied and exploited in classical optics. This blurring of the classical-quantum boundary has opened up a potential new direction for frontier work in optics.
We present a comprehensive overview of chirality and its optical manifestation in plasmonic nanosystems and nanostructures. We discuss top-down fabricated structures that range from solid metallic nanostructures to groupings of metallic nanoparticles arranged in three dimensions. We also present the large variety of bottom-up synthesized structures. Using DNA, peptides, or other scaffolds, complex nanoparticle arrangements of up to hundreds of individual nanoparticles have been realized. Beyond this static picture, we also give an overview of recent demonstrations of active chiral plasmonic systems, where the chiral optical response can be controlled by an external stimulus. We discuss the prospect of using the unique properties of complex chiral plasmonic systems for enantiomeric sensing schemes.

Starting from a set of different two- and three-nucleon interactions from chiral effective field theory, we use the importance-truncated no-core shell model for ab initio calculations of excitation energies as well as electric quadrupole (E2) and mag netic dipole (M1) moments and transition strengths for selected p-shell nuclei. We explore the sensitivity of the excitation energies to the chiral interactions as a first step towards and systematic uncertainty propagation from chiral inputs to nuclear structure observables. The uncertainty band spanned by the different chiral interactions is typically in agreement with experimental excitation energies, but we also identify observables with notable discrepancies beyond the theoretical uncertainty that reveal insufficiencies in the chiral interactions. For electromagnetic observables we identify correlations among pairs of E2 or M1 observables based on the ab initio calculations for the different interactions. We find extremely robust correlations for E2 observables and illustrate how these correlations can be used to predict one observable based on an experimental datum for the second observable. In this way we circumvent convergence issues and arrive at far more accurate results than any direct ab initio calculation. A prime example for this approach is the quadrupole moment of the first 2^+ state in C-12, which is predicted with an drastically improved accuracy.
