Nanophotonics systems have recently been studied under the perspective of non-Hermitian physics. Given their potential for wavefront control, nonlinear optics and quantum optics, it is crucial to develop predictive tools to assist nanophotonic design. We present here a simple model relying on the coupling to an effective bath consisting of a continuum of modes to describe systems of coupled resonators, and test it on dielectric nanocylinder chains accessible to experiments. The effective bath coupling constants, which depend non-trivially on the distance between resonators, are extracted from numerical simulations in the case of just two coupled elements. The model predicts successfully the dispersive and reactive nature of modes for configurations with multiple resonators, as validated by numerical solutions. It can be applied to larger systems, which are hardly solvable with finite-element approaches.
Non-Hermitian systems characterized by suitable spatial distributions of gain and loss can exhibit spectral singularities in the form of zero-width resonances associated to real-frequency poles in the scattering operator. Here, we study this intrigui
Revealing hidden non-radiative (dark) of resonant nanostructures using optical methods such as dark-field spectroscopy often becomes a sophisticated problem due to a weak coupling of these modes with a far-field radiation, whereas methods of dark-mod
We introduce a theory to analyze the behavior of light emitters in nanostructured environments rigorously. Based on spectral theory, the approach opens the possibility to quantify precisely how an emitter decays to resonant states of the structure an
Electromagnetic metasurfaces enable the advanced control of surface-wave propagation by spatially tailoring the local surface reactance. Interestingly, tailoring the surface resistance distribution in space provides new, largely unexplored degrees of
While spin-orbit coupling (SOC), an essential mechanism underlying quantum phenomena from the spin Hall effect to topological insulators, has been widely studied in well-isolated Hermitian systems, much less is known when the dissipation plays a majo
