We report spatially resolved measurements of static and fluctuating electric fields over conductive (Au) and non-conductive (SiO2) surfaces. Using an ultrasensitive `nanoladder cantilever probe to scan over these surfaces at distances of a few tens of nanometers, we record changes in the probe resonance frequency and damping that we associate with static and fluctuating fields, respectively. We find that the two quantities are spatially correlated and of similar magnitude for the two materials. We quantitatively describe the observed effects on the basis of trapped surface charges and dielectric fluctuations in an adsorbate layer. Our results provide direct, spatial evidence for surface dissipation in adsorbates that affects nanomechanical sensors, trapped ions, superconducting resonators, and color centers in diamond.

We now have mounting evidences that the circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies is polluted with metals processed through stars. The fate of these metals is however still an open question and several findings indicate that they remain poorly mixed. A powerful tool to study the low-density gas of the CGM is offered by absorption lines in quasar spectra, although the information retrieved is limited to 1D along the sightline. We report the serendipitous discovery of two close-by bright z_gal=1.148 extended galaxies with a fortuitous intervening z_abs=1.067 foreground absorber. MUSE IFU observations spatially probes kpc-scales in absorption in the plane of the sky over a total area spanning ~30 kpc^-2. We identify two OII emitters at z_abs down to 21 kpc with SFR~2 M_sun/yr. We measure small fractional variations (<30%) in the equivalent widths of FeII and MgII cold gas absorbers on coherence scales of 8kpc but stronger variation on larger scales (25kpc). We compute the corresponding cloud gas mass <2x10^9M_sun. Our results indicate a good efficiency of the metal mixing on kpc-scales in the CGM of a typical z~1 galaxy. This study show-cases new prospects for mapping the distribution and sizes of metal clouds observed in absorption against extended background sources with 3D spectroscopy.
We have used scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to resolve the spatial variation of the density of states of twisted graphene layers on top of a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite substrate. Owing to the twist a moire pattern develops wit h a periodicity that is substantially larger than the periodicity of a single layer graphene. The twisted graphene layer has electronic properties that are distinctly different from that of a single layer graphene due to the nonzero interlayer coupling. For small twist angles (about 1-3.5 degree) the integrated differential conductivity spectrum exhibits two well-defined Van Hove singularities. Spatial maps of the differential conductivity that are recorded at energies near the Fermi level exhibit a honeycomb structure that is comprised of two inequivalent hexagonal sub-lattices. For energies |E-E_F|>0.3 eV the hexagonal structure in the differential conductivity maps vanishes. We have performed tight-binding calculations of the twisted graphene system using the propagation method, in which a third graphene layer is added to mimic the substrate. This third layer lowers the symmetry and explains the development of the two hexagonal sub-lattices in the moire pattern. Our experimental results are in excellent agreement with the tight-binding calculations.
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy is a powerful and versatile sensing method with a detection limit down to the single molecule level. In this article, we demonstrate how topology optimization (TopOpt) can be used for designing surface enhanced Ram an scattering (SERS) substrates adhering to realistic fabrication constraints. As an example, we experimentally demonstrated a SERS enhancement factor of 5*10e4 for the 604 cm-1 Raman line of rhodamine 6G using metal nanostructures with a critical dimension of 20 nm. We then show that, by relaxing the fabrication constraints, TopOpt may be used to design SERS substrates with orders of magnitude larger enhancement factor. The results validate topology optimization as an effective method for engineering nanostructures with optimal performance and fabrication tolerance.

We experimentally investigate dissipation in mechanical resonators made of a disordered superconducting thin film of Molybdenum-Rhenium(MoRe) alloy. By electrostatically driving the drum with a resonant AC voltage, we detect its motion using a superc onducting microwave cavity. From the temperature dependence of mechanical resonance frequencies and quality factors, we find evidence for non-resonant, mechanically active two-level systems (TLSs) limiting its quality factor at low temperature. In addition, we observe a strong suppression of mechanical dissipation at large mechanical driving amplitudes, suggesting an unconventional saturation of the non-resonant TLSs. These new observations shed light on the mechanism of mechanical damping in superconducting drums and routes towards understanding dissipation in such mechanical systems.

We have carried out scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements on exfoliated monolayer graphene on SiO$_2$ to probe the correlation between its electronic and structural properties. Maps of the local density of states are characterized by electron and hole puddles that arise due to long range intravalley scattering from intrinsic ripples in graphene and random charged impurities. At low energy, we observe short range intervalley scattering which we attribute to lattice defects. Our results demonstrate that the electronic properties of graphene are influenced by intrinsic ripples, defects and the underlying SiO$_2$ substrate.
