In this work we study the quantisation of the Seiberg-Witten curve for the E-string theory compactified on a two-torus. We find that the resulting operator expression belongs to the class of elliptic quantum curves. It can be rephrased as an eigenvalue equation with eigenvectors corresponding to co-dimension 2 defect operators and eigenvalues to co-dimension 4 Wilson surfaces wrapping the elliptic curve, respectively. Moreover, the operator we find is a generalised version of the van Diejen operator arising in the study of elliptic integrable systems. Although the microscopic representation of the co-dimension 4 defect only furnishes an $mathrm{SO}(16)$ flavour symmetry in the UV, we find an enhancement in the IR to representations in terms of affine $E_8$ characters. Finally, using the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the E-string BPS partition function, we give a path integral derivation of the quantum curve.

We consider compactifications of rank $Q$ E-string theory on a genus zero surface with no punctures but with flux for various subgroups of the $text{E}_8times text{SU}(2)$ global symmetry group of the six dimensional theory. We first construct a simp le Wess-Zumino model in four dimensions corresponding to the compactification on a sphere with one puncture and a particular value of flux, the cap model. Using this theory and theories corresponding to two punctured spheres with flux, one can obtain a large number of models corresponding to spheres with a variety of fluxes. These models exhibit interesting IR enhancements of global symmetry as well as duality properties. As an example we will show that constructing sphere models associated to specific fluxes related by an action of the Weyl group of $text{E}_8$ leads to the S-confinement duality of the $text{USp}(2Q)$ gauge theory with six fundamentals and a traceless antisymmetric field. Finally, we show that the theories we discuss possess an $text{SU}(2)_{text{ISO}}$ symmetry in four dimensions that can be naturally identified with the isometry of the two-sphere. We give evidence in favor of this identification by computing the `t Hooft anomalies of the $text{SU}(2)_{text{ISO}}$ in 4d and comparing them with the predicted anomalies from 6d.
We study 6d E-string theory with defects on a circle. Our basic strategy is to apply the geometric transition to the supersymmetric gauge theories. First, we calculate the partition functions of the 5d SU(3)$_0$ gauge theory with 10 flavors, which is UV-dual to the 5d Sp(2) gauge theory with 10 flavors, based on two different 5-brane web diagrams, and check that two partition functions agree with each other. Then, by utilizing the geometric transition, we find the surface defect partition function for E-string on $mathbb{R}^4times T^2$. We also discuss that our result is consistent with the elliptic genus. Based on the result, we show how the global symmetry is broken by the defects, and discuss that the breaking pattern depends on where/how we insert the defects.
The present techniques for the perturbative solution of quantum spectral curve problems in N=4 SYM and ABJM models are limited to the situation when the states quantum numbers are given explicitly as some integer numbers. These techniques are suffici ent to recover full analytical structure of the conserved charges provided that we know a finite basis of functions in terms of which they could be written explicitly. It is known that in the case of N=4 SYM both the contributions of asymptotic Bethe ansatz and wrapping or finite size corrections are expressed in terms of the harmonic sums. However, in the case of ABJM model only the asymptotic contribution can still be written in the harmonic sums basis, while the wrapping corrections part can not. Moreover, the generalization of harmonic sums basis for this problem is not known. In this paper we present a Mellin space technique for the solution of multiloop Baxter equations, which is the main ingredient for the solution of corresponding quantum spectral problems, and provide explicit results for the solution of ABJM quantum spectral curve in the case of twist 1 operators in sl(2) sector for arbitrary spin values up to four loop order with explicit account for wrapping corrections. It is shown that the result for anomalous dimensions could be expressed in terms of harmonic sums decorated by the fourth root of unity factors, so that maximum transcendentality principle holds.
If the fundamental mass scale of superstring theory is as low as few TeVs, the massive modes of vibrating strings, Regge excitations, will be copiously produced at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We discuss the complementary signals of low mass supe rstrings at the proposed electron-positron facility (CLIC), in e^+e^- and gamma gamma collisions. We examine all relevant four-particle amplitudes evaluated at the center of mass energies near the mass of lightest Regge excitations and extract the corresponding pole terms. The Regge poles of all four-point amplitudes, in particular the spin content of the resonances, are completely model independent, universal properties of the entire landscape of string compactifications. We show that gamma gamma to e^+ e^- scattering proceeds only through a spin-2 Regge state. We estimate that for this particular channel, string scales as high as 4 TeV can be discovered at the 11sigma level with the first fb^{-1} of data collected at a center-of-mass energy approx 5 TeV. We also show that for e^+e^- annihilation into fermion-antifermion pairs, string theory predicts the precise value, equal 1/3, of the relative weight of spin 2 and spin 1 contributions. This yields a dimuon angular distribution with a pronounced forward-backward asymmetry, which will help distinguishing between low mass strings and other beyond the standard model scenarios.
The quantum Gauss Law as an interacting field equation is a prominent feature of QED with eminent impact on its algebraic and superselection structure. It forces charged particles to be accompanied by photon clouds that cannot be realized in the Fock space, and prevents them from having a sharp mass. Because it entails the possibility of measurement of charges at a distance, it is well-known to be in conflict with locality of charged fields in a Hilbert space. We show how a new approach to QED advocated by the authors, that avoids indefinite metric and ghosts, can secure causality and achieve Gauss Law along with all its nontrivial consequences. We explain why this is not at variance with recent results in a paper by Buchholz et al.
