The long dreamed quantum internet would consist of a network of quantum nodes (solid-state or atomic systems) linked by flying qubits, naturally based on photons, travelling over long distances at the speed of light, with negligible decoherence. A key component is a light source, able to provide single or entangled photon pairs. Among the different platforms, semiconductor quantum dots are very attractive, as they can be integrated with other photonic and electronic components in miniaturized chips. In the early 1990s two approaches were developed to synthetize self-assembled epitaxial semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), or artificial atoms, namely the Stranski-Krastanov (SK) and the droplet epitaxy (DE) method. Because of its robustness and simplicity, the SK method became the workhorse to achieve several breakthroughs in both fundamental and technological areas. The need for specific emission wavelengths or structural and optical properties has nevertheless motivated further research on the DE method and its more recent development, the local-droplet-etching (LDE), as complementary routes to obtain high quality semiconductor nanostructures. The recent reports on the generation of highly entangled photon pairs, combined with good photon indistinguishability, suggest that DE and LDE QDs may complement (and sometime even outperform) conventional SK InGaAs QDs as quantum emitters. We present here a critical survey of the state of the art of DE and LDE, highlighting the advantages and weaknesses, the obtained achievements and the still open challenges, in view of applications in quantum communication and technology.

Diamond is a material of choice in the pursuit of integrated quantum photonic technologies. So far, the majority of photonic devices fabricated from diamond, are made from (100)-oriented crystals. In this work, we demonstrate a methodology for the fa brication of optically-active membranes from (111)-oriented diamond. We use a liftoff technique to generate membranes, followed by chemical vapour deposition of diamond in the presence of silicon to generate homogenous silicon vacancy colour centers with emission properties that are superior to those in (100)-oriented diamond. We further use the diamond membranes to fabricate high quality microring resonators with quality factors exceeding ~ 3000. Supported by finite difference time domain calculations, we discuss the advantages of (111) oriented structures as building blocks for quantum nanophotonic devices.
Rare-earth ions are promising solid state systems to build light-matter interfaces at the quantum level. This relies on their potential to show narrow optical homogeneous linewidths or, equivalently, long-lived optical quantum states. In this letter, we report on europium molecular crystals that exhibit linewidths in the 10s of kHz range, orders of magnitude narrower than other molecular centers. We harness this property to demonstrate efficient optical spin initialization, coherent storage of light using an atomic frequency comb, and optical control of ion-ion interactions towards implementation of quantum gates. These results illustrate the utility of rare-earth molecular crystals as a new platform for photonic quantum technologies that combines highly coherent emitters with the unmatched versatility in composition, structure, and integration capability of molecular materials.
Deep subwavelength integration of high-definition plasmonic nanostructures is of key importance for the development of future optical nanocircuitry for high-speed communication, quantum computation and lab-on-a-chip applications. So far the experimen tal realization of proposed extended plasmonic networks consisting of multiple functional elements remains challenging, mainly due to the multi-crystallinity of commonly used thermally evaporated gold layers. Resulting structural imperfections in individual circuit elements will drastically reduce the yield of functional integrated nanocircuits. Here we demonstrate the use of very large (>100 micron^2) but thin (<80 nm) chemically grown single-crystalline gold flakes, which, after immobilization, serve as an ideal basis for focused-ion beam milling and other top-down nanofabrication techniques on any desired substrate. Using this methodology we obtain high-definition ultrasmooth gold nanostructures with superior optical properties and reproducible nano-sized features over micrometer length scales. Our approach provides a possible solution to overcome the current fabrication bottleneck and to realize high-definition plasmonic nanocircuitry.
We present experimental coherent two-dimensional Fourier transform spectra of the exciton resonances in semiconductor quantum wells for a pulse sequence that isolates two-quantum coherences. By measuring the real part of the spectra, we can determine that the spectra are dominated by two quantum coherences due to many-body interactions, not bound biexcitons. Simulations performed using dynamics controlled truncation agree well with the experiments.
Unidirectional photonic edge states arise at the interface between two topologically-distinct photonic crystals. Here, we demonstrate a micron-scale GaAs photonic ring resonator, created using a spin Hall-type topological photonic crystal waveguide. Embedded InGaAs quantum dots are used to probe the mode structure of the device. We map the spatial profile of the resonator modes, and demonstrate control of the mode confinement through tuning of the photonic crystal lattice parameters. The intrinsic chirality of the edge states makes them of interest for applications in integrated quantum photonics, and the resonator represents an important building block towards the development of such devices with embedded quantum emitters.
