In this paper, we propose a data-driven energy storage system (ESS)-based method to enhance the online small-signal stability monitoring of power networks with high penetration of intermittent wind power. To accurately estimate inter-area modes that are closely related to the systems inherent stability characteristics, a novel algorithm that leverages on recent advances in wide-area measurement systems (WAMSs) and ESS technologies is developed. It is shown that the proposed approach can smooth the wind power fluctuations in near real-time using a small additional ESS capacity and thus significantly enhance the monitoring of small-signal stability. Dynamic Monte Carlo simulations on the IEEE 68-bus system are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in smoothing wind power and estimating the inter-area mode statistical properties.

This paper proposes a novel approach to estimate the steady-state angle stability limit (SSASL) by using the nonlinear power system dynamic model in the modal space. Through two linear changes of coordinates and a simplification introduced by the ste ady-state condition, the nonlinear power system dynamic model is transformed into a number of single-machine-like power systems whose power-angle curves can be derived and used for estimating the SSASL. The proposed approach estimates the SSASL of angles at all machines and all buses without the need for manually specifying the scenario, i.e. setting sink and source areas, and also without the need for solving multiple nonlinear power flows. Case studies on 9-bus and 39-bus power systems demonstrate that the proposed approach is always able to capture the aperiodic instability in an online environment, showing promising performance in the online monitoring of the steady-state angle stability over the traditional power flow-based analysis.
In this paper, a data-driven approach to characterize influence in a power network is presented. The characterization is based on the notion of information transfer in a dynamical system. In particular, we use the information transfer based definitio n of influence in a dynamical system and provide a data-driven approach to identify the influential state(s) and generators in a power network. Moreover, we show how the data-based information transfer measure can be used to characterize the type of instability of a power network and also identify the states causing the instability.

The rapid development of renewable energy has increased the peak to valley difference of the netload, making the netload following being a new challenge to the power system. Electric boiler with thermal storage (EBTS) occupies a non-negligible part o f the load in the winter season in Northern China. EBTS operation optimization can not only save its own energy cost but also reduce the peak shaving and valley filling pressure of the system. To this end, the operation optimization of EBTS for providing the power balancing service is studied in this paper, which mainly includes three parts: First, the joint probability distribution between the predicted and actual temperatures is built by utilizing the Copula theory; Secondly, the actual temperatures are sampled based on the predicted temperatures of the next day, and the scenario set is generated by clustering these samples, where K-means clustering method are used; Thirdly, the stochastic operation optimization model of EBTS considering the uncertainty of outdoor temperature is constructed. Through the case study, it is found that the proposed method can save the total operation cost of the EBTS compared with the deterministic EBTS operation optimization model.
We consider the problem of stability analysis for distribution grids with droop-controlled inverters and dynamic distribution power lines. The inverters are modeled as voltage sources with controllable frequency and amplitude. This problem is very ch allenging for large networks as numerical simulations and detailed eigenvalue analysis are impactical. Motivated by the above limitations, we present in this paper a systematic and computationally efficient framework for stability analysis of inverter-based distribution grids. To design our framework, we use tools from singular perturbation and Lyapunov theories. Interestingly, we show that stability of the fast dynamics of the power grid depends only on the voltage droop gains of the inverters while, stability of the slow dynamics, depends on both voltage and frequency droop gains. Finally, by leveraging these timescale separation properties, we derive sufficient conditions on the frequency and voltage droop gains of the inverters that warrant stability of the full system. We illustrate our theoretical results through a numerical example on the IEEE 13-bus distribution grid.
A significant amount of converter-based generation is being integrated into the bulk electric power grid to fulfill the future electric demand through renewable energy sources, such as wind and photovoltaic. The dynamics of converter systems in the o verall stability of the power system can no longer be neglected as in the past. Numerous efforts have been made in the literature to derive detailed dynamic models, but using detailed models becomes complicated and computationally prohibitive in large system level studies. In this paper, we use a data-driven, black-box approach to model the dynamics of a power electronic converter. System identification tools are used to identify the dynamic models, while a power amplifier controlled by a real-time digital simulator is used to perturb and control the converter. A set of linear dynamic models for the converter are derived, which can be employed for system level studies of converter-dominated electric grids.
