Unconventional quantum vortex matter state hosts quantum oscillations in the underdoped high-temperature cuprate superconductors

A central question in the underdoped cuprates pertains to the nature of the pseudogap ground state. A conventional metallic ground state of the pseudogap region has been argued to host quantum oscillations upon destruction of the superconducting order parameter by modest magnetic fields. Here we use low applied measurement currents and millikelvin temperatures on ultra-pure single crystals of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ to unearth an unconventional quantum vortex matter ground state characterized by vanishing electrical resistivity, magnetic hysteresis, and non-ohmic electrical transport characteristics beyond the highest laboratory accessible static fields. A new model of the pseudogap ground state is now required to explain quantum oscillations that are hosted by the bulk quantum vortex matter state without experiencing sizeable additional damping in the presence of a large maximum superconducting gap; possibilities include a pair density wave.

The metallic state of the underdoped high-Tc cuprates has remained an enigma: How may seemingly disconnected Fermi surface segments, observed in zero magnetic field as a result of the opening of a partial gap (the pseudogap), possess conventional qua siparticle properties? How do the small Fermi-surface pockets evidenced by the observation of quantum oscillations (QO) emerge as superconductivity is suppressed in high magnetic fields? Such QO, discovered in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.5 (Y123) and YBa2Cu4O8 (Y124), signify the existence of a conventional Fermi surface (FS). However, due to the complexity of the crystal structures of Y123 and Y124 (CuO2 double-layers, CuO chains, low structural symmetry), it has remained unclear if the QO are specific to this particular family of cuprates. Numerous theoretical proposals have been put forward to explain the route toward QO, including materials-specific scenarios involving CuO chains and scenarios involving the quintessential CuO2 planes. Here we report the observation of QO in underdoped HgBa2CuO4+{delta} (Hg1201), a model cuprate superconductor with individual CuO2 layers, high tetragonal symmetry, and no CuO chains. This observation proves that QO are a universal property of the underdoped CuO2 planes, and it opens the door to quantitative future studies of the metallic state and of the Fermi-surface reconstruction phenomenon in this structurally simplest cuprate.

The observations of quantum oscillations in overdoped cuprate superconductors were in agreement with a charge density contained in a cylindrical Fermi surface but the frequencies of lightly doped compounds were much smaller than expected. This was at tributed to a topological transition into small pockets of Fermi surface associated with the existence of the charge density wave underlying superlattice. On the other hand, spectroscopic measurements suggested that the large two-dimensional Fermi surface changes continuously into a set of four disconnected arcs. Here we take into account the effect of the pseudogap that limits the available $k$-space area where the Landau levels are developed on the Luttinger theorem and obtain the correct carrier densities. The calculations show how the disconnected arcs evolve into a closed Fermi surface reconciling the experiments.
Shubnikov-de Haas and de Haas-van Alphen effects have been measured in the underdoped high temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.51}$. Data are in agreement with the standard Lifshitz-Kosevitch theory, which confirms the presence of a coheren t Fermi surface in the ground state of underdoped cuprates. A low frequency $F = 530 pm 10$ T is reported in both measurements, pointing to small Fermi pocket, which corresponds to 2% of the first Brillouin zone area only. This low value is in sharp contrast with that of overdoped Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+delta}$, where a high frequency $F = 18$ kT has been recently reported and corresponds to a large hole cylinder in agreement with band structure calculations. These results point to a radical change in the topology of the Fermi surface on opposing sides of the cuprate phase diagram.
We report quantum oscillations in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.56 over a significantly large range in magnetic field extending from 24 to 101 T, enabling three well-spaced low frequencies at 440 T, 532 T, and 620 T to be clearly resolved. We show that a smal l nodal bilayer coupling that splits a nodal pocket into bonding and antibonding orbits yields a sequence of frequencies, F0 - {Delta}F, F0, and F0 + {Delta}F and accompanying beat pattern similar to that observed experimentally, on invoking magnetic breakdown tunneling at the nodes. The relative amplitudes of the multiple frequencies observed experimentally in quantum oscillation measurements are shown to be reproduced using a value of nodal bilayer gap quantitatively consistent with that measured in photoemission experiments in the underdoped regime.

Evidence from NMR of a two-component spin system in cuprate high-$T_c$ superconductors is shown to be paralleled by similar evidence from the electronic entropy so that a two-component quasiparticle fluid is implicated. We propose that this two-compo nent scenario is restricted to the optimal and underdoped regimes and arises from the upper and lower branches of the reconstructed energy-momentum dispersion proposed by Yang, Rice and Zhang (YRZ) to describe the pseudogap. We calculate the spin susceptibility within the YRZ formalism and show that the doping and temperature dependence reproduces the experimental data for the cuprates.
