Gold-associated pathfinder minerals have been investigated by identifying host minerals of Au for samples collected from an artisanal mining site near a potential gold mine (Kubi Gold Project) in Dunkwa-On-Offin in the central region of Ghana. We find that for each composition of Au powder (impure) and the residual black hematite/magnetite sand that remains after gold panning, there is a unique set of associated diverse indicator minerals. These indicator minerals are identified as SiO2 (quartz), Fe3O4 (magnetite), and Fe2O3 (hematite), while contributions from pyrite, arsenopyrites, iridosmine, scheelite, tetradymite, garnet, gypsum, and other sulfate materials are insignificant. This constitutes a confirmative identification of Au pathfinding minerals in this particular mineralogical area. The findings suggest that X-ray diffraction could also be applied in other mineralogical sites to aid in identifying indicator minerals of Au and the location of ore bodies at reduced environmental and exploration costs.

Zirconium based alloys have been irradiated with 11 and 15 MeV proton and 116 MeV oxygen ions at different doses. The changes in the microstructure have been studied for the ion irradiated alloys as a function of dose using X-Ray Diffraction Line Pro file Analysis (XRDLPA) based on the whole powder pattern fitting technique. It was observed that the microstructural parameters like domain size, microstrain within the domain, dislocation density did not change significantly with the increase in dose for proton irradiated samples. A clear change was noticed in these microstructural parameters as a function of dose for oxygen irradiated samples. There was a drastic decrease in domain size at a dose of 1x10^17 O5+/m2 but these values reached a plateau with increasing dose. The values of microstrain and dislocation density increased significantly with the dose of irradiation.
Manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4) and copper doped manganese ferrite (Mn0.75Cu0.25Fe2O4) soft materials were synthesized through solid-state sintering method. The phase purity and quality were confirmed from x-ray diffraction patterns. Then the samples wer e subjected to neutron diffraction experiment and the diffraction data were analyzed using FullProf software package. The surface morphology of the soft material samples was studied using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Crystal parameters, crystallite parameters, occupancy at A and B sites of the spinel structure, magnetic moments of the atoms at various locations, symmetries, oxygen position parameters, bond lengths etc. were measured and compared with the reference data. In MnFe2O4, both octahedral (A) and tetrahedral (B) positions are shared by Mn2+ and Fe2+/3+ cations, here A site is predominantly occupied by Fe2+ and B site is occupied by Mn at 0.825 occupancy. The Cu2+ ions in Cu0.25Mn0.75Fe2O4 mostly occupy the B site. Copper mostly occupy the Octahedral (16d) sites. The length of the cubic lattice decreases with the increasing Copper content. The magnetic properties, i.e. A or B site magnetic moments, net magnetic moment etc. were measured using neutron diffraction analysis and compared with the bulk magnetic properties measured with VSM studies.
Epitaxial BiFeO3/SrRuO3 superlattices have been grown by pulsed laser deposition on a (001) oriented LaAlO3 substrate and probed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. To investigate the structural competition between rhombohedral BiFeO3 and or thorhombic SrRuO3 the total thickness of all SLs was kept constant and the bilayer thickness (period) {Lambda} was varied. The interlayer strain effects are therefore tuned from large strain effects (short {Lambda} period) to quasi-relaxed structure (large {Lambda}). A complementary investigation using X-ray diffraction and phonon dynamics hints to change from a rhombohedral to a tetragonal structure in the superlattices with the increase of the interlayer strain effect.

Information on the lattice parameter of single crystals with known crystallographic structure allows for estimations of sample quality and composition. In many cases it is suffcient to determine one lattice parameter or the lattice spacing along a ce rtain, high-symmetry direction, e.g. in order to determine the composition in a substitution series by taking advantage of Vegards rule. Here we present a guide to accurate measurements of single crystals with dimensions ranging from 200 $mu$m up to several millimeter using a standard powder diffractometer in Bragg-Brentano geometry. The correction of the error introduced by the sample height and the optimization of the alignment are discussed in detail. In particular for single crystals with a plate-like habit, the described procedure allows for measurement of the lattice spacings normal to the plates with high accuracy on a timescale of minutes.

Two sets of amorphous carbon materials prepared at different routes are irradiated with swift (145 MeV) heavy ion (Ne6+). The structural parameters like the size of ordered grains along c and a axis i.e. Lc & La, the average spacing of the crystallog raphic planes (002) i.e. d002 and the fraction of the amorphous phase of the unirradiated and the irradiated samples are estimated by X-ray diffraction technique. The fraction of the amorphous phase is generally found to increase with the irradiation dose for both sets of the samples. The estimated and values are found to be almost unaffected by irradiation. The estimated values of corroborate with the increase of disorder in both sets of the samples with the increasing dose of irradiation. Keywords: X-ray Diffraction, Amorphous Carbon, Irradiation
