Measuring the spin structure of nucleons (protons and neutrons) extensively tests our understanding of how nucleons arise from quarks and gluons, the fundamental building blocks of nuclear matter. The nucleon spin structure is typically probed in scattering experiments using polarized beams and polarized nucleon targets, and the results are compared with predictions from Quantum Chromodynamics directly or with effective theories that describe the strong nuclear force. Here we report on new proton spin structure measurements with significantly better precision and improved coverage than previous data at low momentum transfer squared between $0.012$ and $1.0$ GeV$^2$. This kinematic range provides unique tests of effective field theory predictions. Our results show that a complete description of the nucleon spin remains elusive. They call for further theoretical works that include the more fundamental lattice gauge method. Finally, our data agree with the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule, a fundamental prediction of quantum field theory.

We report measurements of single- and double- spin asymmetries for $W^{pm}$ and $Z/gamma^*$ boson production in longitudinally polarized $p+p$ collisions at $sqrt{s} = 510$ GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC. The asymmetries for $W^{pm}$ were measure d as a function of the decay lepton pseudorapidity, which provides a theoretically clean probe of the protons polarized quark distributions at the scale of the $W$ mass. The results are compared to theoretical predictions, constrained by recent polarized deep inelastic scattering measurements, and show a preference for a sizable, positive up antiquark polarization in the range $0.05<x<0.2$.
The spin-structure functions $g_1$ and $g_2$, and the spin-dependent partial cross-section $sigma_mathrm{TT}$ have been extracted from the polarized cross-sections differences, $Delta sigma_{parallel}hspace{-0.06cm}left( u,Q^{2}right)$ and $Delta sig ma_{perp}hspace{-0.06cm}left( u,Q^{2}right)$ measured for the $vec{^textrm{3}textrm{He}}(vec{textrm{e}},textrm{e})textrm{X}$ reaction, in the E97-110 experiment at Jefferson Lab. Polarized electrons with energies from 1.147 to 4.404 GeV were scattered at angles of 6$^{circ}$ and 9$^{circ}$ from a longitudinally or transversely polarized $^{3}$He target. The data cover the kinematic regions of the quasi-elastic, resonance production and beyond. From the extracted spin-structure functions, the first moments $overline{Gamma_1}hspace{-0.06cm}left(Q^{2}right)$, $Gamma_2hspace{-0.06cm}left(Q^{2}right)$ and $I_{mathrm{TT}}hspace{-0.06cm}left(Q^{2}right)$ are evaluated with high precision for the neutron in the $Q^2$ range from 0.035 to 0.24~GeV$^{2}$. The comparison of the data and the chiral effective field theory predictions reveals the importance of proper treatment of the $Delta$ degree of freedom for spin observables.
We have examined the spin structure of the proton in the region of the nucleon resonances (1.085 GeV < W < 1.910 GeV) at an average four momentum transfer of Q^2 = 1.3 GeV^2. Using the Jefferson Lab polarized electron beam, a spectrometer, and a pola rized solid target, we measured the asymmetries A_parallel and A_perp to high precision, and extracted the asymmetries A_1 and A_2, and the spin structure functions g_1 and g_2. We found a notably non-zero A_perp, significant contributions from higher-twist effects, and only weak support for polarized quark--hadron duality.

We report on measurements of the neutron spin asymmetries $A_{1,2}^n$ and polarized structure functions $g_{1,2}^n$ at three kinematics in the deep inelastic region, with $x=0.33$, 0.47 and 0.60 and $Q^2=2.7$, 3.5 and 4.8 (GeV/c)$^2$, respectively. T hese measurements were performed using a 5.7 GeV longitudinally-polarized electron beam and a polarized $^3$He target. The results for $A_1^n$ and $g_1^n$ at $x=0.33$ are consistent with previous world data and, at the two higher $x$ points, have improved the precision of the world data by about an order of magnitude. The new $A_1^n$ data show a zero crossing around $x=0.47$ and the value at $x=0.60$ is significantly positive. These results agree with a next-to-leading order QCD analysis of previous world data. The trend of data at high $x$ agrees with constituent quark model predictions but disagrees with that from leading-order perturbative QCD (pQCD) assuming hadron helicity conservation. Results for $A_2^n$ and $g_2^n$ have a precision comparable to the best world data in this kinematic region. Combined with previous world data, the moment $d_2^n$ was evaluated and the new result has improved the precision of this quantity by about a factor of two. When combined with the world proton data, polarized quark distribution functions were extracted from the new $g_1^n/F_1^n$ values based on the quark parton model. While results for $Delta u/u$ agree well with predictions from various models, results for $Delta d/d$ disagree with the leading-order pQCD prediction when hadron helicity conservation is imposed.
We report a measurement of the $pi^-$ photoproduction beam asymmetry for the reaction $vec{gamma} p rightarrow pi^- Delta^{++}$ using data from the GlueX experiment in the photon beam energy range 8.2--8.8 GeV. The asymmetry $Sigma$ is measured as a function of four-momentum transfer $t$ to the $Delta^{++}$ and compared to phenomenological models. We find that $Sigma$ varies as a function of $t$: negative at smaller values and positive at higher values of $|t|$. The reaction can be described theoretically by $t$-channel particle exchange requiring pseudoscalar, vector, and tensor intermediaries. In particular, this reaction requires charge exchange, allowing us to probe pion exchange and the significance of higher-order corrections to one-pion exchange at low momentum transfer. Constraining production mechanisms of conventional mesons may aid in the search for and study of unconventional mesons. This is the first measurement of the process at this energy.
