We introduce three new analytical and semi-analytical tools that allow one to determine the topological character of impurity Shiba chains. The analytical methods are based on calculating the effective Greens function of an infinite embedded chain using the T-matrix formalism and describing the chain as a {it line impurity}. We thus provide a solution to the longstanding size-effects problem affecting the only general alternative method, the numerical tight-binding analysis. As an example we consider a chain of magnetic impurities deposited on an s-wave superconducting substrate with Rashba spin-orbit and we calculate its topological phase diagram as a function of the magnetic impurity strength and the chemical potential. We find a perfect agreement between all our new techniques and a numerical analysis.

A major challenge in developing topological superconductors for implementing topological quantum computing is their characterization and control. It has been proposed that a p-wave gapped topological superconductor can be fabricated with single-atom precision by assembling chains of magnetic atoms on s-wave superconductors with spin-orbit coupling. Here, we analyze the Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference in atom-by-atom constructed Mn chains on Nb(110) and for the first time reveal the formation of multi-orbital Shiba bands using momentum resolved measurements. We find evidence that one band features a topologically non-trivial p-wave gap as inferred from its shape and particle-hole asymmetric intensity. Our work is an important step towards a distinct experimental determination of topological phases in multi-orbital systems by bulk electron band structure properties only.
Magnetic atoms on superconductors induce localized Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states. The proposal that topological superconductivity and Majorana modes can be engineered in arrays of hybridizing YSR states has led to their intense investigation. H ere, we study Majorana modes emerging from bands of hybridized YSR states in artificially constructed Manganese (Mn) chains on superconducting Niobium (Nb). By controlling the chain geometry on the single atom level, we can measure the interaction-induced energy splitting of Majorana modes from both chains ends with increasing chain length. We find periodic lengths where their interaction is tuned to zero within the experimental energy resolution. Our work unravels ways to manipulate and minimize interactions between Majorana modes in finite-size systems as required for Majorana-based storage and processing of quantum information.
Chains of magnetic atoms placed on the surface of an s-wave superconductor with large spin-orbit coupling provide a promising platform for the realization of topological superconducting states characterized by the presence of Majorana zero-energy mod es. In this work we study the properties of the one-dimensional chain of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states induced by magnetic impurities using a realistic model for the magnetic atoms that include the presence of multiple scattering channels. These channels are mixed by the spin-orbit coupling and, via the hybridization of the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states at different sites of the chain, result in a multi-band structure for the chain. We obtain the topological phase diagram for such band structure. We identify the parameter regimes for which the different bands lead to a topological phase and show that the inclusion of higher bands can greatly enlarge the phase space for the realization of topological states.
We study a chain of magnetic moments exchange coupled to a conventional three dimensional superconductor. In the normal state the chain orders into a collinear configuration, while in the superconducting phase we find that ferromagnetism is unstable to the formation of a magnetic spiral state. Beyond weak exchange coupling the spiral wavevector greatly exceeds the inverse superconducting coherence length as a result of the strong spin-spin interaction mediated through the subgap band of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states. Moreover, the simple spin-spin exchange description breaks down as the subgap band crosses the Fermi energy, wherein the spiral phase becomes stabilized by the spontaneous opening of a $p-$wave superconducting gap within the band. This leads to the possibility of electron-driven topological superconductivity with Majorana boundary modes using magnetic atoms on superconducting surfaces.
We study a two-band model of fermions in a 1d chain with an antisymmetric hybridization that breaks inversion symmetry. We find that for certain values of its parameters, the $sp$-chain maps formally into a $p$-wave superconducting chain, the archety pical 1d system exhibiting Majorana fermions. The eigenspectra, including the existence of zero energy modes in the topological phase, agree for both models. The end states too share several similarities in both models, such as the behavior of the localization length, the non-trivial topological index and robustness to disorder. However, we show by mapping the $s$- and $p$- fermions to two copies of Majoranas, that the excitations in the ends of a finite $sp$ chain are indeed conventional fermions though endowed with protected topological properties. Our results are obtained by a scattering approach in a semi-infinite chain with an edge defect treated within the $T$-matrix approximation. We augment the analytical results with exact numerical diagonalization that allow us to extend our results to arbitrary parameters and also to disordered systems.
