Highly sensitive and selective label free devices for real-time identification of specific biomarkers are expected to significantly impact the biosensing field. The ability of plasmonic systems to confine the light in nanometer volume and to manipulate it by tuning the size, shape and material features of the nanostructures, makes these systems promising candidates for biomedical devices. In this work we demonstrate the engineered sensing capabilities of a compact array of 3D metal dielectric core-shell chiral metamaterial. The intrinsic chirality of the nano-helices makes the system circular polarization dependent and unaffected by the background interferences, allowing to work even in complex environment. The core-shell architecture enhances the sensing properties of the chiral metamaterial on both in the far and near field, offering also a large surface to molecular immobilization. With our system we recorded sensitivity of about 800nm/RIU and FOM= 1276 RIU-1. The sensing abilities of the system is demonstrated with the detection of the of the TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) , a critical biomarker for the screening of neurodegenerative diseases. In particular, the sensor was tested in different environments, such as human serum, with concentrations ranging from 1pM down to 10fM, opening new perspectives for novel diagnostic tools.

A bulk left-handed metamaterial with fishnet structure is investigated to show the optical loss compensation via surface plasmon amplification, with the assistance of a Gaussian gain in PbS quantum dots. The optical resonance enhancement around 200 T Hz is confirmed by the retrieval method. By exploring the dependence of propagation loss on the gain coefficient and metamaterial thickness, we verify numerically that the left-handed response can endure a large propagation thickness with ultralow and stable loss under a certain gain coefficient.
A microwave ultra-broadband polarization-independent metamaterial absorber is demonstrated. It is composed of a periodic array of metal-dielectric multilayered quadrangular frustum pyramids. These pyramids possess resonant absorption modes at multi-f requencies, of which the overlapping leads to the total absorption of the incident wave over an ultra-wide spectral band. The experimental absorption at normal incidence is above 90% in the frequency range of 7.8-14.7GHz, and the absorption is kept large when the incident angle is smaller than 60 degrees. The experimental results agree well with the numerical simulation.
In our previous work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 103602 (2009)], we found that repulsive Casimir forces could be realized by using chiral metamaterials if the chirality is strong enough. In this work, we check four different chiral metamaterial designs (i .e., Twisted-Rosettes, Twisted-Crosswires, Four-U-SRRs, and Conjugate-Swastikas) and find that the designs of Four-U-SRRs and Conjugate-Swastikas are the most promising candidates to realize repulsive Casimir force because of their large chirality and the small ratio of structure length scale to resonance wavelength.
In the close vicinity of a chiral nanostructure, the circular dichroism of a biomolecule could be greatly enhanced, due to the interaction with the local superchiral fields. Modest enhancement of optical activity using a planar metamaterial, with som e chiral properties, and achiral nanoparticles has been previously reported. A more substantial chirality enhancement can be achieved in the local filed of a chiral nanostructure with a three-dimensional arrangement. Using an embossed chiral nanostructure designed for chiroptical sensing, we measure the circular dichroism spectra of two biomolecules, Chlorophylls A and B, at the molecular level, using a simple polarization resolved reflection measurement. This experiment is the first realization of the on-resonance surface-enhanced circular dichroism, achieved by matching the chiral resonances of a strongly chiral metamaterial with that of a chiral molecule, resulting in an unprecedentedly large differential CD spectrum from a monolayer of a chiral material.

Speckle patterns have been widely confirmed that can be utilized to reconstruct the wavelength information. In order to achieve higher resolution, a varies of optical diffusing waveguides have been investigated with a focus on their wavelength sensit ivity. However, it has been a challenge to reach the balance among cost, volumes, resolution, and stability. In this work, we designed a compact cylindrical random scattering waveguide (CRSW) as the light diffuser only by mixing TiO2 particles and ultra-violate adhesive. The speckle patterns are generated by the light multiple scattering in the CRSW. Importantly, the thin layer of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were sprayed on the end face of the CRSW. This allows the near infrared (NIR) light to be converted to the visible light, breaking the imaging limitation of visible cameras in the NIR range. We further designed a convolution neural network (CNN) to recognize the wavelength of the speckle patterns with good robustness and excellent ability of transfer learning, resulting in the achievement of a high resolution of 20 kHz ( 0.16 fm) at around 1550 nm with temperature resistance of 2 celsius. Our results provide a low-cost, compact, and simple NIR wavemeter in particular with the ultra high resolution and good temperature stability.
