In this paper, we consider an imperfect finite beam lying on a nonlinear foundation, whose dimensionless stiffness is reduced from $1$ to $k$ as the beam deflection increases. Periodic equilibrium solutions are found analytically and are in good agreement with a numerical resolution, suggesting that localized buckling does not appear for a finite beam. The equilibrium paths may exhibit a limit point whose existence is related to the imperfection size and the stiffness parameter $k$ through an explicit condition. The limit point decreases with the imperfection size while it increases with the stiffness parameter. We show that the decay/growth rate is sensitive to the restoring force model. The analytical results on the limit load may be of particular interest for engineers in structural mechanics

We investigate the buckling under compression of a slender beam with a distributed lateral elastic support, for which there is an associated cost. For a given cost, we study the optimal choice of support to protect against Euler buckling. We show tha t with only weak lateral support, the optimum distribution is a delta-function at the centre of the beam. When more support is allowed, we find numerically that the optimal distribution undergoes a series of bifurcations. We obtain analytical expressions for the buckling load around the first bifurcation point and corresponding expansions for the optimal position of support. Our theoretical predictions, including the critical exponent of the bifurcation, are confirmed by computer simulations.
This paper is a theoretical and numerical study of the uniform growth of a repeating sinusoidal imperfection in the line of a strut on a nonlinear elastic Winkler type foundation. The imperfection is introduced by considering an initially deformed sh ape which is a sine function with an half wavelength. The restoring force is either a bi-linear or an exponential profile. Periodic solutions of the equilibrium problem are found using three different approaches: a semi-analytical method, an explicit solution of a Galerkin method and a direct numerical resolution. These methods are found in very good agreement and show the existence of a maximum imperfection size which leads to a limit point in the equilibrium curve of the system. The existence of this limit point is very important since it governs the appearance of localization phenomena. Using the Galerkin method, we then establish an exact formula for this maximum imperfection size and we show that it does not depend on the choice of the restoring force. We also show that this method provides a better estimate with respect to previous publications. The decrease of the maximum compressive force supported by the beam as a function of the imperfection magnitude is also determined. We show that the leading term of the development has a different exponent than in subcritical buckling of elastic systems, and that the exponent values depend on the choice of the restoring force.

This paper derives a finite-strain plate theory consistent with the principle of stationary three-dimensional (3-D) potential energy under general loadings with a third-order error. Staring from the 3-D nonlinear elasticity (with both geometrical and material nonlinearity) and by a series expansion, we deduce a vector plate equation with three unknowns, which exhibits the local force-balance structure. The success relies on using the 3-D field equations and bottom traction condition to derive exact recursion relations for the coefficients. Associated weak formulations are considered, leading to a 2-D virtual work principle. An alternative approach based on a 2-D truncated energy is also provided, which is less consistent than the first plate theory but has the advantage of the existence of a 2-D energy function. As an example, we consider the pure bending problem of a hyperelastic block. The comparison between the analytical plate solution and available exact one shows that the plate theory gives second-order correct results. Comparing with existing plate theories, it appears that the present one has a number of advantages, including the consistency, order of correctness, generality of the loadings, applicability to finite-strain problems and no involvement of unphysical quantities.
This paper proposes a low order geometrically exact flexible beam formulation based on the utilisation of generic beam shape functions to approximate distributed kinematic properties of the deformed structure. The proposed nonlinear beam shapes appro ach is in contrast to the majority of geometrically nonlinear treatments in the literature in which element based --- and hence high order --- discretisations are adopted. The kinematic quantities approximated specifically pertain to shear and extensional gradients as well as local orientation parameters based on an arbitrary set of globally referenced attitude parameters. In developing the dynamic equations of motion, an Euler angle parameterisation is selected as it is found to yield fast computational performance. The resulting dynamic formulation is closed using an example shape function set satisfying the single generic kinematic constraint. The formulation is demonstrated via its application to the modelling of a series of static and dynamic test cases of both simple and non-prismatic structures; the simulated results are verified using MSC Nastran and an element-based intrinsic beam formulation. Through these examples it is shown that the nonlinear beam shapes approach is able to accurately capture the beam behaviour with a very minimal number of system states.
The goal of this paper is to investigate the normal and tangential forces acting at the point of contact between a horizontal surface and a rolling ball actuated by internal point masses moving in the balls frame of reference. The normal force and st atic friction are derived from the equations of motion for a rolling ball actuated by internal point masses that move inside the balls frame of reference, and, as a special case, a rolling disk actuated by internal point masses. The masses may move along one-dimensional trajectories fixed in the balls and disks frame. The dynamics of a ball and disk actuated by masses moving along one-dimensional trajectories are simulated numerically and the minimum coefficients of static friction required to prevent slippage are computed.
