Thermal management materials are of critical importance for engineering miniaturized electronic devices, where theoretical design of such materials demands the evaluation of thermal conductivities which are numerically expensive. In this work, we applied the recently developed machine learning interatomic potential (MLIP) to evaluate the thermal conductivity of hexagonal boron nitride monolayers. The MLIP is obtained using the Gaussian approximation potential (GAP) method, and the resulting lattice dynamical properties and thermal conductivity are compared with those obtained from explicit frozen phonon calculations. It is observed that accurate thermal conductivity can be obtained based on MLIP constructed with about 30% representative configurations, and the high-order force constants provide a more reliable benchmark on the quality of MLIP than the harmonic approximation.

We introduce a Gaussian approximation potential (GAP) for atomistic simulations of liquid and amorphous elemental carbon. Based on a machine-learning representation of the density-functional theory (DFT) potential-energy surface, such interatomic pot entials enable materials simulations with close-to DFT accuracy but at much lower computational cost. We first determine the maximum accuracy that any finite-range potential can achieve in carbon structures; then, using a novel hierarchical set of two-, three-, and many-body structural descriptors, we construct a GAP model that can indeed reach the target accuracy. The potential yields accurate energetic and structural properties over a wide range of densities; it also correctly captures the structure of the liquid phases, at variance with state-of-the-art empirical potentials. Exemplary applications of the GAP model to surfaces of diamond-like tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) are presented, including an estimate of the amorphous materials surface energy, and simulations of high-temperature surface reconstructions (graphitization). The new interatomic potential appears to be promising for realistic and accurate simulations of nanoscale amorphous carbon structures.
The half-Heusler compound has drawn attention in a variety of fields as a candidate material for thermoelectric energy conversion and spintronics technology. This is because it has various electronic structures, such as semi-metals, semiconductors, a nd a topological insulator. When the half-Heusler compound is incorporated into the device, the control of high lattice thermal conductivity owing to high crystal symmetry is a challenge for the thermal manager of the device. The calculation for the prediction of lattice thermal conductivity, which is an important physical parameter for controlling the thermal management of the device, requires a calculation cost of several 100 times as much as the usual density functional theory calculation. Therefore, we examined whether lattice thermal conductivity prediction by machine learning was possible on the basis of only the atomic information of constituent elements for thermal conductivity calculated by the density functional theory calculation in various half-Heusler compounds. Consequently, we constructed a machine learning model, which can predict the lattice thermal conductivity with high accuracy from the information of only atomic radius and atomic mass of each site in the half-Heusler type crystal structure. Applying our results, the lattice thermal conductivity for an unknown half-Heusler compound can be immediately predicted. In the future, low-cost and short-time development of new functional materials can be realized, leading to breakthroughs in the search of novel functional materials.
We demonstrate that a high-dimensional neural network potential (HDNNP) can predict the lattice thermal conductivity of semiconducting materials with an accuracy comparable to that of density functional theory (DFT) calculation. After a training proc edure based on the force, the root mean square error between the forces predicted by the HDNNP and DFT is less than 40 meV/{AA}. As typical examples, we present the results for Si and GaN bulk crystals. The deviation from the thermal conductivity calculated using DFT is within 1% at 200 to 500 K for Si and within 5.4% at 200 to 1000 K for GaN.
We develop an Fe-C-H interatomic potential based on the modified embedded-atom method (MEAM) formalism based on density functional theory to enable large-scale modular dynamics simulations of carbon steel and hydrogen.
Intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity ($kappa_l$) is a desired requirement in many crystalline solids such as thermal barrier coatings and thermoelectrics. Here, we design an advanced machine-learning (ML) model based on crystal graph convol utional neural network that is insensitive to volumes (i.e., scale) of the input crystal structures to discover novel quaternary chalcogenides, AMMQ$_3$ (A/M/M=alkali, alkaline-earth, post-transition metals, lanthanides, Q=chalcogens). Upon screening the thermodynamic stability of $sim$ 1 million compounds using the ML model iteratively and performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations for a small fraction of compounds, we discover 99 compounds that are validated to be stable in DFT. Taking several DFT-stable compounds, we calculate their $kappa_l$ using phonon-Boltzmann transport equation, which reveals ultralow-$kappa_l$ ($<$ 2 Wm$^{-1}$K$^{-1}$ at room-temperature) due to their soft elasticity and strong phonon anharmonicity. Our work demonstrates the high-efficiency of scale-invariant ML model in predicting novel compounds and presents experimental research opportunities with these new compounds.
