Multi-crystalline silicon is widely used for producing low-cost and high-efficiency solar cells. During crystal growth and device fabrication, silicon solar cells contain grain boundaries (GBs) which are preferential segregation sites for atomic impurities such as oxygen atoms. GBs can induce charge carriers recombination significantly reducing carrier lifetimes and therefore they can be detrimental for Si device performance. We studied the correlation between structural, energetic and electronic properties of {Sigma}3{111} Si GB in the presence of vacancies, strain and multiple O segregation. The study of the structural and energetic properties of GBs in the presence of strain and vacancies gives an accurate description of the complex mechanisms that control the segregation of oxygen atoms. We analysed tensile and compressive strain and we obtained that local tensile strain around O impurities is very effective for segregation. We also studied the role of multiple O impurities in the presence of Si vacancies finding that the segregation is favorite for those structures which have restored tetrahedral covalent bonds. The presence of vacancies attract atomic impurities in order to restore the electronic stability: the interstitial impurity becomes substitutional. This analysis was the starting point to correlate the change of the electronic properties in {Sigma}3{111}Si GBs with O impurities in the presence of strain and vacancies. For each structure we analysed the density of states and its projection on atoms and states, the band gaps, the segregation energy and their correlation in order to characterise the nature of new energy levels. Actually, knowing the origin of defined electronic states would allow the optimization of materials in order to reduce non-radiative electron-hole recombination avoiding charge and energy losses and therefore improving solar cell efficiency.

The ability to manipulate oxygen anion defects rather than metal cations in complex oxides can facilitate creating new functionalities critical for emerging energy and device technologies. However, the difficulty in activating oxygen at reduced tempe ratures hinders the deliberate control of important defects, oxygen vacancies. Here, strontium cobaltite (SrCoOx) is used to demonstrate that epitaxial strain is a powerful tool for manipulating the oxygen vacancy concentration even under highly oxidizing environments and at annealing temperatures as low as 300 C. By applying a small biaxial tensile strain (2%), the oxygen activation energy barrier decreases by ~30%, resulting in a tunable oxygen deficient steady-state under conditions that would normally fully oxidize unstrained cobaltite. These strain-induced changes in oxygen stoichiometry drive the cobaltite from a ferromagnetic metal towards an antiferromagnetic insulator. The ability to decouple the oxygen vacancy concentration from its typical dependence on the operational environment is useful for effectively designing oxides materials with a specific oxygen stoichiometry.

Using {it ab initio} methods, we investigate the modification of the magnetic properties of the $m=2$ member of the strontium iridates Ruddlesden-Popper series Sr$_{m+1}$Ir$_{m}$O$_{3m+1}$, bilayer Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$, induced by epitaxial strain and o xygen vacancies. Unlike the single layer compound Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, which exhibits a robust in-plane magnetic order, the energy difference between in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic orderings in Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is much smaller and it is expected that small external perturbations could induce magnetic transitions. Our results indicate that epitaxial strain yields a spin-flop transition, that is driven by the crossover between the intralayer $J_1$ and interlayer $J_2$ magnetic exchange interactions upon compressive strain. While $J_1$ is essentially insensitive to strain effects, the strength of $J_2$ changes by one order of magnitude for tensile strains $geq$ 3~%. In addition, our study clarifies that the unusual in-plane magnetic response observed in Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ upon the application of an external magnetic field originates from the canting of the local magnetic moments due to oxygen vacancies, which tilt the octahedral networks - thereby allowing for noncollinear spin configurations.
We have investigated the structural sequence of the high-pressure phases of silicon and germanium. We have focussed on the cd->beta-tin->Imma->sh phase transitions. We have used the plane-wave pseudopotential approach to the density-functional theory implemented within the Vienna ab-initio simulation package (VASP). We have determined the equilibrium properties of each structure and the values of the critical parameters including a hysteresis effect at the phase transitions. The order of the phase transitions has been obtained alternatively from the pressure dependence of the enthalpy and of the internal structure parameters. The commonly used tangent construction is shown to be very unreliable. Our calculations identify a first-order phase transition from the cd to the beta-tin and from the Imma to the sh phase, and they indicate the possibility of a second-order phase-transition from the beta-tin to the Imma phase. Finally, we have derived the enthalpy barriers between the phases.

Mg grain boundary (GB) segregation and GB diffusion can impact the processing and properties of Al-Mg alloys. Yet, Mg GB diffusion in Al has not been measured experimentally or predicted by simulations. We apply atomistic computer simulations to pred ict the amount and the free energy of Mg GB segregation, and the impact of segregation on GB diffusion of both alloy components. At low temperatures, Mg atoms segregated to a tilt GB form clusters with highly anisotropic shapes. Mg diffuses in Al GBs slower than Al itself, and both components diffuse slowly in comparison with Al GB self-diffusion. Thus, Mg segregation significantly reduces the rate of mass transport along GBs in Al-Mg alloys. The reduced atomic mobility can be responsible for the improved stability of the microstructure at elevated temperatures.

We report that in unannealed LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) heterostructures the critical thickness for the appearance of the two-dimensional electron gas can be less than 4 unit cell (uc), the interface is conducting even for STO substrates with mixed term inations and the low-temperature resistance upturn in LAO/STO heterostructures with thick LAO layers strongly depends on laser fluence. Our experimental results provide fundamental insights into the different roles played by oxygen vacancies and polarization catastrophe in the two-dimensional electron gas in crystalline LAO/STO heterostructures.
