LaCrGe$_3$ has attracted attention as a paradigm example of the avoidance of ferromagnetic (FM) quantum criticality in an itinerant magnet. By combining thermodynamic, transport, x-ray and neutron scattering as well as $mu$SR measurements, we refined the temperature-pressure phase diagram of LaCrGe$_3$. We provide thermodynamic evidence (i) for the first-order character of the FM transition when it is suppressed to low temperatures and (ii) for the formation of new phases at high pressures. From our microscopic data, we infer that short-range FM ordered clusters exist in these high-pressure phases. These results suggest that LaCrGe$_3$ is a rare example, which fills the gap between the two extreme limits of avoided FM quantum criticality in clean and strongly disordered metals.

The temperature-pressure phase diagram of the ferromagnet LaCrGe$_3$ is determined for the first time from a combination of magnetization, muon-spin-rotation and electrical resistivity measurements. The ferromagnetic phase is suppressed near $2.1$~GP a, but quantum criticality is avoided by the appearance of a magnetic phase, likely modulated, AFM$_Q$. Our density functional theory total energy calculations suggest a near degeneracy of antiferromagnetic states with small magnetic wave vectors $Q$ allowing for the potential of an ordering wave vector evolving from $Q=0$ to finite $Q$, as expected from the most recent theories on ferromagnetic quantum criticality. Our findings show that LaCrGe$_3$ is a very simple example to study this scenario of avoided ferromagnetic quantum criticality and will inspire further study on this material and other itinerant ferromagnets.
We present the pressure-temperature phase diagram La$_5$Co$_2$Ge$_3$ up to $sim$ 5,GPa, which was constructed from magnetization, resistivity and specific heat measurements. At ambient pressure, La$_5$Co$_2$Ge$_3$ is an itinerant ferromagnet with a C urie temperature $T_textrm Csim$ 4,K. Upon increasing pressure up to $sim$ 1.7,GPa, $T_textrm C$ is suppressed down to $sim$ 3,K. Upon further increasing pressure, our results suggest that La$_5$Co$_2$Ge$_3$ enters a different low-temperature ground state. The corresponding transition temperature, $T^*$, has a nonmonotonic pressure dependence up to $sim$ 5,GPa. Our results demonstrate that the ferromagnetic quantum critical point in La$_5$Co$_2$Ge$_3$ is avoided by the appearance of a different, likely magnetically ordered state that has an antiferromagnetic component.
The magnetic properties of the layered oxypnictide LaMnAsO have been revisited using neutron scattering and magnetization measurements. The present measurements identify the N{e}el temperature $T_N$ = 360(1) K. Below $T_N$ the critical exponent descr ibing the magnetic order parameter is $beta$ = 0.33$-$0.35, consistent with a three dimensional Heisenberg model. Above this temperature, diffuse magnetic scattering indicative of short-range magnetic order is observed, and this scattering persists up to $T_{SRO}$ = 650(10) K. The magnetic susceptibility shows a weak anomaly at $T_{SRO}$ and no anomaly at $T_N$. Analysis of the diffuse scattering data using a reverse Monte Carlo algorithm indicates that above $T_N$ nearly two- dimensional, short-range magnetic order is present with a correlation length of 9.3(3) {AA} within the Mn layers at 400 K. The inelastic scattering data reveal a spin-gap of 3.5 meV in the long-range ordered state, and strong, low-energy (quasi-elastic) magnetic excitations emerging in the short-range ordered state. Comparison with other related compounds correlates the distortion of the Mn coordination tetrahedra to the sign of the magnetic exchange along the layer-stacking direction, and suggests that short-range order above $T_N$ is a common feature in the magnetic behavior of layered Mn-based pnictides and oxypnictides.
We demonstrate that the cluster-glass state emerges as ferromagnetic quantum criticality is avoided in itinerant ferromagnet Sr1-x(La0.5K0.5)xRuO3. In this compound, the ferromagnetic order is suppressed by increasing x, and then disappears at the cr itical concentration: x=0.5. In this x range, the present study reveals that no prominent feature is ascribed to the quantum critical fluctuations in specific heat. Instead, ac magnetic susceptibility exhibits a broad peak due to spontaneous spin freezing, and the peak temperature depends significantly on the frequency of the applied ac magnetic field. Furthermore, specific heat is enhanced within a wide temperature range, whereas specific heat shows no salient anomaly associated with spin freezing. These features are characteristics of the formation of cluster-glass; in particular, the observed frequency variations in ac magnetic susceptibility are well described by the Vogel-Fulcher law. We compare the features concerning the suppression of the ferromagnetic order in this doped compound with those in isostructural Ca- and La-doped SrRuO3, and suggest that a local correlated disorder effect and the very small coherence of itinerant Ru 4d electrons are responsible for the cluster-glass formation instead of the quantum phase transition in Sr1-x(La0.5K0.5)xRuO3.
Temperature-pressure phase diagram of the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb iridate $beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ is explored using magnetization, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, and muon spin rotation ($mu$SR) measurements, as well as single-crystal x-ray diffracti on under pressure and ab initio calculations. The Neel temperature of $beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ increases with the slope of 0.9 K/GPa upon initial compression, but the reduction in the polarization field $H_c$ reflects a growing instability of the incommensurate order. At 1.4 GPa, the ordered state breaks down upon a first-order transition giving way to a new ground state marked by the coexistence of dynamically correlated and frozen spins. This partial freezing in the absence of any conspicuous structural defects may indicate classical nature of the resulting pressure-induced spin liquid, an observation paralleled to the increase in the nearest-neighbor off-diagonal exchange $Gamma$ under pressure.
