Bacterial colonization ofimplanted biomedical devicesis themain cause of healthcare-associated infections, estimated to be 8.8 million per year in Europe. Many infections originate from damaged skin, which lets microorganisms exploit injuries and surgical accesses as passageways to reach the implant site and inner organs. Therefore, an effective treatment of skin damage is highly desirable for the success of many biomaterial-related surgical procedures. Due to gained resistance to antibiotics, new antibacterial treatments are becoming vital to control nosocomial infections arising as surgical and post-surgical complications. Surface coatings can avoid biofouling and bacterial colonization thanks to biomaterial inherent properties (e.g., super hydrophobicity), specifically without using drugs, which may cause bacterial resistance. The focus of this review is to highlight the emerging role of degradable polymeric micro- and nano-structures that show intrinsic antifouling and antimicrobial properties, with a special outlook towards biomedical applications dealing with skin and skin damage. The intrinsic properties owned by the biomaterials encompass three main categories: (1) physical-mechanical, (2) chemical, and (3) electrostatic. Clinical relevance in ear prostheses and breast implants is reported. Collecting and discussing the updated outcomes in this field would help the development of better performing biomaterial-based antimicrobial strategies, which are useful to prevent infections.

The need to develop new methods for the high-sensitivity diagnosis of malaria has initiated a global activity in medical and interdisciplinary sciences. Most of the diverse variety of emerging techniques are based on research-grade instruments, sophi sticated reagent-based assays or rely on expertise. Here, we suggest an alternative optical methodology with an easy-to-use and cost-effective instrumentation based on unique properties of malaria pigment reported previously and determined quantitatively in the present study. Malaria pigment, also called hemozoin, is an insoluble microcrystalline form of heme. These crystallites show remarkable magnetic and optical anisotropy distinctly from any other components of blood. As a consequence, they can simultaneously act as magnetically driven micro-rotors and spinning polarizers in suspensions. These properties can gain importance not only in malaria diagnosis and therapies, where hemozoin is considered as drug target or immune modulator, but also in the magnetic manipulation of cells and tissues on the microscopic scale.
In this work, the antibacterial activity of the polymeric precursor dicarbonyldichlororuthenium has been studied against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. This Ru carbonyl precursor shows minimum inhibitory concentration at nanogram per mil lilitre, which renders it a novel antimicrobial polymer without any organic ligands. Besides, dicarbonyldichlororuthenium antimicrobial activity is markedly boosted under photoirradiation, which can be ascribed to the enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species under UV irradiation. This compound has been able to inhibit bacterial growth via the disruption of bacterial membranes and triggering upregulation of stress responses as shown in microscopic measurements. The activity of polymeric ruthenium as an antibacterial material is significant even at very low concentrations while remaining biocompatible to the mammalian cells at much higher concentrations. This study proves that this simple Ru carbonyl precursor can be used as an antimicrobial compound with high activity and a low toxicity profile in the context of need for new antimicrobial agents to fight bacterial infections.
Micro/nano porous polymeric material is considered a unique industrial material due to its extremely low thermal conductivity, low density, and high surface area. Therefore, it is necessary to establish an accurate thermal conductivity prediction mod el suiting their applicable conditions and provide a theoretical basis for expanding of their applications. In this work, the development of the calculation model of equivalent thermal conductivity of micro/nano porous polymeric materials in recent years was summarized. Firstly, it reviews the process of establishing the overall equivalent thermal conductivity calculation model for micro/nano porous polymers. Then, the predicted calculation models of thermal conductivity are introduced according to the conductive thermal conductivity models and the radiative thermal conductivity models separately. In addition, the thermal conduction part is divided into the gaseous thermal conductivity model, solid thermal conductivity model and gas-solid coupling model. Finally, it is concluded that, compared with other porous materials, there are few studies on heat transfer of micro/nano porous polymers, especially on the special heat transfer mechanisms such as scale effects at the micro/nanoscale. In particular, the following aspects of porous polymers still need to be further studied: micro scaled thermal radiation, heat transfer characteristics of special morphologies at the nanoscale, heat transfer mechanism and impact factors of micro/nano porous polymers. Such studies would provide a more accurate prediction of thermal conductivity and a wider application in energy conversion and storage systems.

The activity of biological cells is primarily based on chemical reactions and typically modeled as a reaction-diffusion system. Cells are, however, highly crowded with macromolecules, including a variety of molecular machines such as enzymes. The wor king cycles of these machines are often coupled with their internal motion (conformational changes). In the crowded environment of a cell, motion interference between neighboring molecules is not negligible, and this interference can affect the reaction dynamics through machine operation. To simulate such a situation, we propose a reaction-diffusion model consisting of particles whose shape depends on an internal state variable, for crowds of nano- to micro-machines. The interference between nearby particles is naturally introduced through excluded volume repulsion. In the simulations, we observed segregation and flow-like patterns enhanced by crowding out of relevant molecules, as well as molecular synchronization waves and phase transitions. The presented model is simple and extensible for diverse molecular machinery, and may serve as a framework to study the interplay between the mechanical stress/strain network and the chemical reaction network in the cell. Applications to more macroscopic systems, e.g., crowds of cells, are also discussed.
Actuation of thin polymeric films via electron irradiation is a promising avenue to realize devices based on strain engineered two dimensional (2D) materials. Complex strain profiles demand a deep understanding of the mechanics of the polymeric layer under electron irradiation; in this article we report a detailed investigation on electron-induced stress on poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) thin film material. After an assessment of stress values using a method based on dielectric cantilevers, we directly investigate the lateral shrinkage of PMMA patterns on epitaxial graphene, which reveals a universal behavior, independent of the electron acceleration energy. By knowing the stress-strain curve, we finally estimate an effective Youngs modulus of PMMA on top of graphene which is a relevant parameter for PMMA based electron-beam lithography and strain engineering applications.
