We study the convergence of a sequence of evolution equations for measures supported on the nodes of a graph. The evolution equations themselves can be interpreted as the forward Kolmogorov equations of Markov jump processes, or equivalently as the equations for the concentrations in a network of linear reactions. The jump rates or reaction rates are divided in two classes; `slow rates are constant, and `fast rates are scaled as~$1/epsilon$, and we prove the convergence in the fast-reaction limit $epsilonto0$. We establish a $Gamma$-convergence result for the rate functional in terms of both the concentration at each node and the flux over each edge (the level-2.5 rate function). The limiting system is again described by a functional, and characterizes both fast and slow fluxes in the system. This method of proof has three advantages. First, no condition of detailed balance is required. Secondly, the formulation in terms of concentration and flux leads to a short and simple proof of the $Gamma$-convergence; the price to pay is a more involved compactness proof. Finally, the method of proof deals with approximate solutions, for which the functional is not zero but small, without any changes.

The collinear hydrogen exchange reaction is a paradigm system for understanding chemical reactions. It is the simplest imaginable atomic system with $2$ degrees of freedom modeling a chemical reaction, yet it exhibits behaviour that is still not well understood - the reaction rate decreases as a function of energy beyond a critical value. Using lobe dynamics we show how invariant manifolds of unstable periodic orbits guide trajectories in phase space. From the structure of the invariant manifolds we deduce that insufficient transfer of energy between the degrees of freedom causes a reaction rate decrease. In physical terms this corresponds to the free hydrogen atom repelling the whole molecule instead of only one atom from the molecule. We further derive upper and lower bounds of the reaction rate, which are desirable for practical reasons.
We study a convergence result of Bourgain--Brezis--Mironescu (BBM) using Triebel-Lizorkin spaces. It is well known that as spaces $W^{s,p} = F^{s}_{p,p}$, and $H^{1,p} = F^{1}_{p,2}$. When $sto 1$, the $F^{s}_{p,p}$ norm becomes the $F^{1}_{p,p}$ nor m but BBM showed that the $W^{s,p}$ norm becomes the $H^{1,p} = F^{1}_{p,2}$ norm. Naively, for $p eq 2$ this seems like a contradiction, but we resolve this by providing embeddings of $W^{s,p}$ into $F^{s}_{p,q}$ for $q in {p,2}$ with sharp constants with respect to $s in (0,1)$. As a consequence we obtain an $mathbb{R}^N$-version of the BBM-result, and obtain several more embedding and convergence theorems of BBM-type that to the best of our knowledge are unknown.
We present a proof of convergence of the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo algorithm in terms of Functional Analysis. We represent the algorithm as an operator on the density functions, and prove the convergence of iterations of this operator in $L^p$, for $1< p<infty$, and strong convergence for $2le p<infty$.
Updated stellar rates for the reaction 23Mg(p,gamma)24Al are calculated by using all available experimental information on 24Al excitation energies. Proton and gamma-ray partial widths for astrophysically important resonances are derived from shell m odel calculations. Correspondences of experimentally observed 24Al levels with shell model states are based on application of the isobaric multiplet mass equation. Our new rates suggest that the 23Mg(p,gamma)24Al reaction influences the nucleosynthesis in the mass A>20 region during thermonuclear runaways on massive white dwarfs.
We show that the orthogonal speed of semigroups of holomorphic self-maps of the unit disc is asymptotically monotone in most cases. Such a theorem allows to generalize previous results of D. Betsakos and D. Betsakos, M. D. Contreras and S. Diaz-Madri gal and to obtain new estimates for the rate of convergence of orbits of semigroups.
