In a generic spacetime a massless field propagates not just on the surface of the forward lightcone of a source, but in its interior. This inside-the-lightcone tail radiation is often described as having scattered off the spacetime curvature. In this work, we study the propagation of such tail radiation for a compact, static, spherically symmetric weak-field (i.e. low density) mass distribution that is well off the line-of-sight (LOS) between a source and an observer, and that is coupled to the radiation only gravitationally. For such perturbers, there are four distinct epochs in the observed radiation: the light-cone piece; the subsequent early-time tail -- ending at the first time that a signal moving at the speed of light could travel from the source to a point in the perturber thence to the observer; the subsequent middle-time tail; and the late-time tail, beginning at the last time that a signal could make such a journey. For massless scalar and vector (eg. electromagnetic radiation), we revisit the previously studied early and late-time tail, and perform the first full examination of the middle-time tail. Studying shorter wavelengths and generic perturbers well off the LOS, we find that the late-time tail carries a small fraction of the energy received by the observer; however, the total middle-time tail contains much more energy. We also note that whereas the middle-time tail appears to the observer to emanate from the perturber -- as one might expect for radiation scattered from the gravitational perturbation -- the late-time tail appears to come back from the source. We speculate on the potential utility of this middle-time tail for detecting or probing a wide variety of perturbations to the spacetime geometry including dark matter candidates and dark matter halos.

We use the effective field theory (EFT) framework to calculate the tail effect in gravitational radiation reaction, which enters at 4PN order in the dynamics of a binary system. The computation entails a subtle interplay between the near (or potentia l) and far (or radiation) zones. In particular, we find that the tail contribution to the effective action is non-local in time, and features both a dissipative and a `conservative term. The latter includes a logarithmic ultraviolet (UV) divergence, which we show cancels against an infrared (IR) singularity found in the (conservative) near zone. The origin of this behavior in the long-distance EFT is due to the point-particle limit -shrinking the binary to a point- which transforms a would-be infrared singularity into an ultraviolet divergence. This is a common occurrence in an EFT approach, which furthermore allows us to use renormalization group (RG) techniques to resum the resulting logarithmic contributions. We then derive the RG evolution for the binding potential and total mass/energy, and find agreement with the results obtained imposing the conservation of the (pseudo) stress-energy tensor in the radiation theory. While the calculation of the leading tail contribution to the effective action involves only one diagram, five are needed for the one-point function. This suggests logarithmic corrections may be easier to incorporate in this fashion. We conclude with a few remarks on the nature of these IR/UV singularities, the (lack of) ambiguities recently discussed in the literature, and the completeness of the analytic Post-Newtonian framework.
We study the cosmology on the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker background in scalar-vector-tensor theories with a broken $U(1)$ gauge symmetry. For parity-invariant interactions arising in scalar-vector-tensor theories with second-order equations of motion, we derive conditions for the absence of ghosts and Laplacian instabilities associated with tensor, vector, and scalar perturbations at linear order. This general result is applied to the computation of the primordial tensor power spectrum generated during inflation as well as to the speed of gravity relevant to dark energy. We also construct a concrete inflationary model in which a temporal vector component $A_0$ contributes to the dynamics of cosmic acceleration besides a scalar field $phi$ through their kinetic mixings. In this model, we show that all the stability conditions of perturbations can be consistently satisfied during inflation and subsequent reheating.
The detection of gravitational waves with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo has enabled novel tests of general relativity, including direct study of the polarization of gravitational waves. While general relativity allows for only two tensor gravitati onal-wave polarizations, general metric theories can additionally predict two vector and two scalar polarizations. The polarization of gravitational waves is encoded in the spectral shape of the stochastic gravitational-wave background, formed by the superposition of cosmological and individually-unresolved astrophysical sources. Using data recorded by Advanced LIGO during its first observing run, we search for a stochastic background of generically-polarized gravitational waves. We find no evidence for a background of any polarization, and place the first direct bounds on the contributions of vector and scalar polarizations to the stochastic background. Under log-uniform priors for the energy in each polarization, we limit the energy-densities of tensor, vector, and scalar modes at 95% credibility to $Omega^T_0 < 5.6 times 10^{-8}$, $Omega^V_0 < 6.4times 10^{-8}$, and $Omega^S_0 < 1.1times 10^{-7}$ at a reference frequency $f_0 = 25$ Hz.

We study the gravitomagnetism in the TeVeS theory. We compute the gravitomagnetic field that a slow-moving mass distribution produces in its Newtonian regime. We report that the consistency between the TeVeS gravitomagnetic field and that predicted b y the Einstein-Hilbert theory leads to a relation between the vector and scalar coupling constants of the theory. We observe that requiring consistency between the near horizon geometry of a black hole in TeVeS and the image of the black hole taken Event Horizon Telescope leads to another relation between the coupling constants of the TeVeS theory and enable us to identify the coupling constants of the theory.
In scalar-vector-tensor (SVT) theories with parity invariance, we perform a gauge-ready formulation of cosmological perturbations on the flat Friedmann-Lema^{i}tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) background by taking into account a matter perfect fluid. We d erive the second-order action of scalar perturbations and resulting linear perturbation equations of motion without fixing any gauge conditions. Depending on physical problems at hand, most convenient gauges can be chosen to study the development of inhomogeneities in the presence of scalar and vector fields coupled to gravity. This versatile framework, which encompasses Horndeski and generalized Proca theories as special cases, is applicable to a wide variety of cosmological phenomena including nonsingular cosmology, inflation, and dark energy. By deriving conditions for the absence of ghost and Laplacian instabilities in several different gauges, we show that, unlike Horndeski theories, it is possible to evade no-go arguments for the absence of stable nonsingular bouncing/genesis solutions in both generalized Proca and SVT theories. We also apply our framework to the case in which scalar and vector fields are responsible for dark energy and find that the separation of observables relevant to the evolution of matter perturbations into tensor, vector, and scalar sectors is transparent in the unitary gauge. Unlike the flat gauge chosen in the literature, this result is convenient to confront SVT theories with observations associated with the cosmic growth history.
