The paper presents the Electron Paramagnetic Resonance study of defects in the spin chain o- (DMTTF)2X family using continuous wave and pulsed techniques. The defects in spin chains are strongly correlated and present similar microscopic structure as a molecular magnet. By means of 2D-HYSCORE and DFT calculations we show a strong reduction of hyperfine coupling between the defects and the nuclear spin bath. We assume that the reduction is due to the Heisenberg exchange interaction which screens the effect of the nuclei.

The magnetic Hamiltonian of the Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet SrCuTe$_{2}$O$_{6}$ is studied by inelastic neutron scattering technique on powder and single crystalline samples above and below the magnetic transition temperatures at 8 K and 2 K. The high temperature spectra reveal a characteristic diffuse scattering corresponding to a multi-spinon continuum confirming the dominant quantum spin-chain behavior due to the third neighbour interaction J$_{intra}$ = 4.22 meV (49 K). The low temperature spectra exhibits sharper excitations at energies below 1.25 meV which can be explained by considering a combination of weak antiferromagnetic first nearest neighbour interchain coupling J$_1$ = 0.17 meV (1.9 K) and even weaker ferromagnetic second nearest neighbour J$_2$ = -0.037 meV (-0.4 K) or a weak ferromagnetic J$_2$ = -0.11 meV (-1.3 K) and antiferromagnetic J$_6$ = 0.16 meV (1.85 K) giving rise to the long-range magnetic order and spin-wave excitations at low energies. These results suggest that SrCuTe$_{2}$O$_{6}$ is a highly one-dimensional Heisenberg system with three mutually perpendicular spin-chains coupled by a weak ferromagnetic J$_2$ in addition to the antiferromagnetic J$_1$ or J$_6$ presenting a contrasting scenario from the highly frustrated hyper-hyperkagome lattice (equally strong antiferromagnetic J$_1$ and J$_2$) found in the iso-structural PbCuTe$_{2}$O$_{6}$.
We studied the magnetic properties, in particular dynamics, of the correlated spins associated with natural defects in the organic spin chain compounds ($o$-DMTTF)$_2X$ ($X$ = Br, Cl) by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Both mater ials exhibit spin-Peierls transitions at temperatures around 50 K [P. Foury-Leylekian et al. Phys. Rev. B 84, 195134 (2011)], which allow a separation of the properties of defects inside the chains from the magnetic response of the spin chains. Indeed, continuous wave ESR measurements performed over a wide temperature range evidence the evolution of the spin dynamics from being governed by the spins in the chains at elevated temperatures to a low-temperature regime which is dominated by defects within the spin-dimerized chains. Such defects polarize the antiferromagnetically coupled spins in their vicinity, thereby leading to a finite local alternating magnetization around the defect site which can be described in terms of a soliton, i.e. a spin 1/2 quasiparticle built of many correlated spins, pinned to the defect. In addition, contributions of triplon excitations of the spin-dimerized state to the ESR response below the transition temperature were observed which provides a spectroscopic estimate for the spin-gap of the studied systems. Moreover, details of spin dynamics deep in the spin-Peierls phase were investigated by pulse ESR experiments which revealed Rabi-oscillations as signatures of coherent spin dynamics. From a comparison of the characteristic damping times of the Rabi oscillations with measurements of the spin relaxation times by means of primary-echo decay and CPMG methods it becomes evident that inhomogeneities in local magnetic fields strongly contribute to the soliton decoherence.

Spin nematic phase is a phase of frustrated quantum magnets with a quadrupolar order of electron spins. Since the spin nematic order is usually masked in experimentally accessible quantities, it is important to develop a methodology for detecting the spin nematic order experimentally. In this paper we propose a convenient method for detecting quasi-long-range spin nematic correlations of a quadrupolar Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state of $S=1/2$ frustrated ferromagnetic spin chain compounds, using electron spin resonance (ESR). We focus on linewidth of a so-called paramagnetic resonance peak in ESR absorption spectrum. We show that a characteristic angular dependence of the linewidth on the direction of magnetic field arises in the spin nematic phase. Measurments of the angular dependence give a signature of the quadrupolar Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state. In our method we change only the direction of the magnetic field, keeping the magnitude of the magnetic field and the temperature. Therefore, our method is advantageous for investigating the one-dimensional quadrupolar liquid phase that usually occupies only a narrow region of the phase diagram.

We measured two magnetic modes with finite and discrete energies in an antiferromagnetic ordered phase of a geometrically frustrated magnet MgCr2O4 by single-crystal inelastic neutron scattering, and clarified the spatial spin correlations of the two levels: one is an antiferromagnetic hexamer and the other is an antiferromagnetic heptamer. Since these correlation types are emblematic of quasielastic scattering with geometric frustration, our results indicate instantaneous suppression of lattice distortion in an ordered phase by spin-lattice coupling, probably also supported by orbital and charge. The common features in the two levels, intermolecular independence and discreteness of energy, suggest that the spin molecules are interpreted as quasiparticles (elementary excitations with energy quantum) of highly frustrated spins, in analogy with the Fermi liquid approximation.
ZnCr2O4 undergoes a first order spin-Peierls-like phase transition at 12.5 K from a cubic spin liquid phase to a tetragonal Neel state. Using powder diffraction and single crystal polarized neutron scattering, we determined the complex spin structure of the Neel phase. This phase consisted of several magnetic domains with different characteristic wave vectors. This indicates that the tetragonal phase of ZnCr2O4 is very close to a critical point surrounded by many different Neel states. We have also studied, using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques, the effect of nonmagnetic dilution on magnetic correlations in ZnCr_{2-2x}Ga_{2x}O_4 (x=0.05 and 0.3). For x=0.05, the magnetic correlations do not change qualitatively from those in the pure material, except that the phase transition becomes second order. For x= 0.3, the spin-spin correlations become short range. Interestingly, the spatial correlations of the frozen spins in the x=0.3 material are the same as those of the fluctuating moments in the pure and the weakly diluted materials.
