Space division multiplexing using multi-core fiber (MCF) is a promising solution to cope with the capacity crunch in standard single-mode fiber based optical communication systems. Nevertheless, the achievable capacity of MCF is limited by inter-core crosstalk (IC-XT). Many existing researches treat IC-XT as a static interference, however, recent research shows that IC-XT varies with time, wavelength and baud rate. This inherent stochastic feature requires a comprehensive characterization of the behaviour of MCF to its application in practical transmission systems and the theoretical understanding of IC-XT phenomenon. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the IC-XT behaviour of an 8-core trench-assisted MCF in a temperature-controlled environment, using popular modulation formats. We compare the measured results with the theoretical prediction to validate the analytical IC-XT models previously developed. Moreover, we explore the effects of the measurement configurations on the IC-XT accuracy and present an analysis on the IC-XT step distribution. Our results indicate that a number of transmission parameters have significant influence on the strength and volatility of IC-XT. Moreover, the averaging time of the power meter and the observation time window can affect the value of the observed IC-XT, the degrees of the effects vary with the type of the source signals.

We experimentally demonstrate the impact of inter-core crosstalk in multicore fibers on 56Gbaud PAM-4 signal quality after 2.5-km transmission over a weakly-coupled and uncoupled sevencore fibers, revealing the crosstalk dependence on carrier central wavelength in range of 1540-1560 nm.
We experimentally characterize photon leakage from 112Gbps data channels in both non-trench and trench-assistant 7-core fibers, demonstrating telecom compatibility for QKD co-existing with high-speed data transmission when a proper core/wavelength allocation is carried out.
Trends in photonic quantum information follow closely the technical progress in classical optics and telecommunications. In this regard, advances in multiplexing optical communications channels have also been pursued for the generation of multi-dimen sional quantum states (qudits), since their use is advantageous for several quantum information tasks. One current path leading in this direction is through the use of space-division multiplexing multi-core optical fibers, which provides a new platform for efficiently controlling path-encoded qudit states. Here we report on a parametric down-conversion source of entangled qudits that is fully based on (and therefore compatible with) state-of-the-art multi-core fiber technology. The source design uses modern multi-core fiber beam splitters to prepare the pump laser beam as well as measure the generated entangled state, achieving high spectral brightness while providing a stable architecture. In addition, it can be readily used with any core geometry, which is crucial since widespread standards for multi-core fibers in telecommunications have yet to be established. Our source represents an important step towards the compatibility of quantum communications with the next-generation optical networks.
In this paper, we propose a multi-target image tracking algorithm based on continuously apative mean-shift (Cam-shift) and unscented Kalman filter. We improved the single-lamp tracking algorithm proposed in our previous work to multi-target tracking, and achieved better robustness in the case of occlusion, the real-time performance to complete one positioning and relatively high accuracy by dynamically adjusting the weights of the multi-target motion states. Our previous algorithm is limited to the analysis of tracking error. In this paper, the results of the tracking algorithm are evaluated with the tracking error we defined. Then combined with the double-lamp positioning algorithm, the real position of the terminal is calculated and evaluated with the positioning error we defined. Experiments show that the defined tracking error is 0.61cm and the defined positioning error for 3-D positioning is 3.29cm with the average processing time of 91.63ms per frame. Even if nearly half of the LED area is occluded, the tracking error remains at 5.25cm. All of this shows that the proposed visible light positioning (VLP) method can track multiple targets for positioning at the same time with good robustness, real-time performance and accuracy. In addition, the definition and analysis of tracking errors and positioning errors indicates the direction for future efforts to reduce errors.
We study a multiple-input single-output (MISO) communication system assisted by a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). A base station (BS) having multiple antennas is assumed to be communicating to a single-antenna user equipment (UE), with the help of a RIS. We assume that the system operates in an environment with line-of-sight (LoS) between the BS and RIS, whereas the RIS-UE link experiences Rayleigh fading. We present a closed form expression for the optimal active and passive beamforming vectors at the BS and RIS respectively. Then, by characterizing the statistical properties of the received SNR at the UE, we apply them to derive analytical approximations for different system performance measures, including the outage probability, average achievable rate and average symbol error probability (SEP). Our results, in general, demonstrate that the gain due to RIS can be substantial, and can be significantly greater than the gains reaped by using multiple BS antennas.
