We provide and analyze a periodic Anderson model for studying magnetism and superconductivity in UTe$_2$, a recently-discovered candidate for a topological spin-triplet superconductor. The 24-band tight-binding model reproduces the band structure obtained from a DFT$+U$ calculation consistent with an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The Coulomb interaction of $f$-electrons enhances Ising ferromagnetic fluctuation along the $a$-axis and stabilizes spin-triplet superconductivity of either $B_{3u}$ or $A_{u}$ symmetry. When effects of pressure are taken into account in hopping integrals, the magnetic fluctuation changes to antiferromagnetic one, and accordingly spin-singlet superconductivity of $A_{g}$ symmetry is stabilized. Based on the results, we propose pressure-temperature and magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams revealing multiple superconducting phases as well as an antiferromagnetic phase. In particular, a mixed-parity superconducting state with spontaneous inversion symmetry breaking is predicted.

Time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) in UTe2 was inferred from observations of a spontaneous Kerr response in the superconducting state after cooling in zero magnetic field, while a finite c-axis magnetic field training was further used to determin e the nature of the non-unitary composite order-parameter of this material. Here we present an extensive study of the magnetic-field-trained Kerr effect, which unveils a unique critical state of pinned ferromagnetic vortices. We show that a remanent Kerr signal that appears following the removal of a training magnetic field, which reflects the response of the TRSB order parameter and the external magnetic field through the paramagnetic susceptibility. This unambiguously demonstrate the importance of the ferromagnetic fluctuations and their intimate relation to the composite order parameter. Focusing the measurement to the center of the sample, we are able to accurately determine the maximum field that is screened by the critical state and the respective critical current. Measurements in the presence of magnetic field show the tendency of the superconductor to produce shielding currents that oppose the increase in vortex-induced magnetization due to the diverging paramagnetic susceptibility.

The recently discovered superconductivity in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$NiO$_2$ provides a new opportunity for studying strongly correlated unconventional superconductivity. The single-hole Ni$^+$ ($3d^9$) configuration in the parent compound NdNiO$_2$ is simil ar to that of Cu$^{2+}$ in cuprates. We suggest that after doping, the intra-orbital spin-singlet and inter-orbital spin-triplet double-hole (doublon) configurations of Ni$^{2+}$ are competing, and we construct a two-band Hubbard model by including both the $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $3d_{xy}$-orbitals. The effective spin-orbital super-exchange model in the undoped case is a variant of the $SU(4)$ Kugel-Khomskii model augmented by symmetry breaking terms. Upon doping, the effective exchange interactions between spin-$frac{1}{2}$ single-holes, spin-1 (triplet) doublons, and singlet doublons are derived. Possible superconducting pairing symmetries are classified in accordance to the $D_{4h}$ crystalline symmetry, and their connections to the superexchange interactions are analyzed.
The discovery of superconductivity in the heavy-fermion paramagnet UTe$_2$ has attracted a lot of attention, particularly due to the reinforcement of superconductivity near pressure- and magnetic-field-induced magnetic quantum phase transitions. A ch allenge is now to characterize the effects of combined pressure and magnetic fields applied along variable directions in this strongly anisotropic paramagnet. Here, we present an investigation of the electrical resistivity of UTe$_2$ under pressure up to 3~GPa and pulsed magnetic fields up to 58~T along the hard magnetic crystallographic directions $mathbf{b}$ and $mathbf{c}$. We construct three-dimensional phase diagrams and show that, near the critical pressure, a field-enhancement of superconductivity coincides with a boost of the effective mass related to the collapse of metamagnetic and critical fields at the boundaries of the correlated paramagnetic regime and magnetically-ordered phase, respectively. Beyond the critical pressure, field-induced transitions precede the destruction of the magnetically-ordered phase, suggesting an antiferromagnetic nature. By bringing new elements about the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity, our work appeals for microscopic theories describing the anisotropic properties of UTe$_2$ under pressure and magnetic field.

We briefly overview the importance of Hubbard and Anderson-lattice models as applied to explanation of high-temperature and heavy-fermion superconductivity. Application of the models during the last two decades provided an explanation of the paired s tates in correlated fermion systems and thus extended essentially their earlier usage to the description of itinerant magnetism, fluctuating valence, and the metal-insulator transition. In second part, we also present some of the new results concerning the unconventional superconductivity and obtained very recently in our group. A comparison with experiment is also discussed, but the main emphasis is put on rationalization of the superconducting properties of those materials within the real-space pairing mechanism based on either kinetic exchange and/or Kondo-type interaction combined with the electron correlation effects.
We theoretically study superconductivity in UTe$_2$, which is a recently-discovered strong candidate for an odd-parity spin-triplet superconductor. Theoretical studies for this compound faced difficulty because first-principles calculations predict a n insulating electronic state, incompatible with superconducting instability. To overcome this problem, we take into account electron correlation effects by a GGA$+U$ method and show the insulator-metal transition by Coulomb interaction. Using Fermi surfaces obtained as a function of $U$, we clarify topological properties of possible superconducting states. Fermi surface formulas for the three-dimensional winding number and three two-dimensional $mathbb{Z}_2$ numbers indicate topological superconductivity at an intermediate $U$ for all the odd-parity pairing symmetry in the $Immm$ space group. Symmetry and topology of superconducting gap node are analyzed and the gap structure of UTe$_2$ is predicted. Topologically protected low-energy excitations are highlighted, and experiments by bulk and surface probes are proposed to link Fermi surfaces and pairing symmetry. Based on the results, we also discuss multiple superconducting phases under magnetic fields, which were implied by recent experiments.
