Thermal processes are one of the most common systems in the industry, making its understanding a mandatory skill for control engineers. So, multiple efforts are focused on developing low-cost and portable experimental training rigs recreating the thermal process dynamics and controls, usually limited to SISO or low order 2x2 MIMO systems. This paper presents PHELP, a low-cost, portable, and high order MIMO educational platform for uniformity temperature control training. The platform is composed of an array of 16 Peltier modules as heating elements, with a lower heating and cooling times, resulting in a 16x16 high order MIMO system. A low-cost real-time infrared thermal camera is employed as a temperature feedback sensor instead of a standard thermal sensor, ideal for high order MIMO system sensing and temperature distribution tracking. The control algorithm is developed in Matlab/Simulink and employs an Arduino board in hardware in the loop configuration to apply the control action to each Peltier module in the array. A temperature control experiment is performed, showing that the platform is suitable for teaching and training experiences not only in the classroom but also for engineers in the industry. Furthermore, various abnormal conditions can be introduced so that smart control engineering features can be tested.

At high latitudes, many cities adopt a centralized heating system to improve the energy generation efficiency and to reduce pollution. In multi-tier systems, so-called district heating, there are a few efficient approaches for the flow rate control d uring the heating process. In this paper, we describe the theoretical methods to solve this problem by deep reinforcement learning and propose a cloud-based heating control system for implementation. A real-world case study shows the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed system controlled by humans, and the simulated experiments for deep reinforcement learning show about 1985.01 gigajoules of heat quantity and 42276.45 tons of water are saved per hour compared with manual control.
In this paper, a distributed learning leader-follower consensus protocol based on Gaussian process regression for a class of nonlinear multi-agent systems with unknown dynamics is designed. We propose a distributed learning approach to predict the re sidual dynamics for each agent. The stability of the consensus protocol using the data-driven model of the dynamics is shown via Lyapunov analysis. The followers ultimately synchronize to the leader with guaranteed error bounds by applying the proposed control law with a high probability. The effectiveness and the applicability of the developed protocol are demonstrated by simulation examples.
This paper develops a model-free volt-VAR optimization (VVO) algorithm via multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) in unbalanced distribution systems. This method is novel since we cast the VVO problem in unbalanced distribution networks to a n intelligent deep Q-network (DQN) framework, which avoids solving a specific optimization model directly when facing time-varying operating conditions of the systems. We consider statuses/ratios of switchable capacitors, voltage regulators, and smart inverters installed at distributed generators as the action variables of the DQN agents. A delicately designed reward function guides these agents to interact with the distribution system, in the direction of reinforcing voltage regulation and power loss reduction simultaneously. The forward-backward sweep method for radial three-phase distribution systems provides accurate power flow results within a few iterations to the DQN environment. Finally, the proposed multi-objective MADRL method realizes the dual goals for VVO. We test this algorithm on the unbalanced IEEE 13-bus and 123-bus systems. Numerical simulations validate the excellent performance of this method in voltage regulation and power loss reduction.
In this paper, a concurrent learning framework is developed for source search in an unknown environment using autonomous platforms equipped with onboard sensors. Distinct from the existing solutions that require significant computational power for Ba yesian estimation and path planning, the proposed solution is computationally affordable for onboard processors. A new concept of concurrent learning using multiple parallel estimators is proposed to learn the operational environment and quantify estimation uncertainty. The search agent is empowered with dual capability of exploiting current estimated parameters to track the source and probing the environment to reduce the impacts of uncertainty, namely Concurrent Learning for Exploration and Exploitation (CLEE). In this setting, the control action not only minimises the tracking error between future agents position and estimated source location, but also the uncertainty of predicted estimation. More importantly, the rigorous proven properties such as the convergence of CLEE algorithm are established under mild assumptions on sensor noises, and the impact of noises on the search performance is examined. Simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed CLEE algorithm. Compared with the information-theoretic approach, CLEE not only guarantees convergence, but produces better search performance and consumes much less computational time.
