We exhibit an exactly solvable example of a SU(2) symmetric Majorana spin liquid phase, in which quenched disorder leads to random-singlet phenomenology. More precisely, we argue that a strong-disorder fixed point controls the low temperature susceptibility $chi(T)$ of an exactly solvable $S=1/2$ model on the decorated honeycomb lattice with quenched bond disorder and/or vacancies, leading to $chi(T) = {mathcal C}/T+ {mathcal D} T^{alpha(T) - 1}$ where $alpha(T) rightarrow 0$ as $T rightarrow 0$. The first term is a Curie tail that represents the emergent response of vacancy-induced spin textures spread over many unit cells: it is an intrinsic feature of the site-diluted system, rather than an extraneous effect arising from isolated free spins. The second term, common to both vacancy and bond disorder (with different $alpha(T)$ in the two cases) is the response of a random singlet phase, familiar from random antiferromagnetic spin chains and the analogous regime in phosphorus-doped silicon (Si:P).

The low-temperature behavior of the magnetic insulator Cs2CuCl4 can be modeled by an anisotropic triangular lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with two different exchange couplings J and J = J/3. We show that in a wide range of magnetic fiel ds the experimentally observed field dependence of the crossover temperature T_c for spin-liquid behavior can be explained within a mean-field theory based on the representation of spin operators in terms of Majorana fermions. We also show that for small magnetic fields the specific heat and the spin susceptibility both exhibit a maximum as a function of temperature at T_c = J/2. In the spin-liquid regime, the Majorana fermions can only propagate along the direction of the strongest bond, in agreement with the dimensional reduction scenario advanced by Balents [Nature (London) 464, 199 (2010)].
Quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an exotic quantum phase of matter whose ground state is quantum-mechanically entangled without any magnetic ordering. A central issue concerns emergent excitations that characterize QSLs, which are hypothetically associat ed with quasiparticle fractionalization and topological order. Here we report highly unusual heat conduction generated by the spin degrees of freedom in a QSL state of the pyrochlore magnet Pr$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$, which hosts spin-ice correlations with strong quantum fluctuations. The thermal conductivity in high temperature regime exhibits a two-gap behavior, which is consistent with the gapped excitations of magnetic ($M$-) and electric monopoles ($E$-particles). At very low temperatures below 200,mK, the thermal conductivity unexpectedly shows a dramatic enhancement, which well exceeds purely phononic conductivity, demonstrating the presence of highly mobile spin excitations. This new type of excitations can be attributed to emergent photons ($ u$-particle), coherent gapless spin excitations in a spin-ice manifold.
The quantum Hall effect (QHE) in two-dimensional (2D) electron gases, which is one of the most striking phenomena in condensed matter physics, involves the topologically protected dissipationless charge current flow along the edges of the sample. Int eger or fractional electrical conductance are measured in units of $e^2/2pihbar$, which is associated with edge currents of electrons or quasiparticles with fractional charges, respectively. Here we discover a novel type of quantization of the Hall effect in an insulating 2D quantum magnet. In $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ with dominant Kitaev interaction on 2D honeycomb lattice, the application of a parallel magnetic field destroys the long-range magnetic order, leading to a field-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL) ground state with massive entanglement of local spins. In the low-temperature regime of the QSL state, we report that the 2D thermal Hall conductance $kappa_{xy}^{2D}$ reaches a quantum plateau as a function of applied magnetic field. $kappa_{xy}^{2D}/T$ attains a quantization value of $(pi/12)(k_B^2/hbar)$, which is exactly half of $kappa_{xy}^{2D}/T$ in the integer QHE. This half-integer thermal Hall conductance observed in a bulk material is a direct signature of topologically protected chiral edge currents of charge neutral Majorana fermions, particles that are their own antiparticles, which possess half degrees of freedom of conventional fermions. These signatures demonstrate the fractionalization of spins into itinerant Majorana fermions and $Z_2$ fluxes predicted in a Kitaev QSL. Above a critical magnetic field, the quantization disappears and $kappa_{xy}^{2D}/T$ goes to zero rapidly, indicating a topological quantum phase transition between the states with and without chiral Majorana edge modes. Emergent Majorana fermions in a quantum magnet are expected to have a major impact on strongly correlated topological quantum matter.
In this letter, we propose a local detection scheme for the Majorana zero mode (MZM) carried by a vison in Kitaevs chiral spin liquid (CSL) using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The STM introduces a single Majorana into the system through hole/c harge injection and the Majorana interacts with the MZM to form a stable composite object. We derive the exact analytical expression of single-hole Greens function in the Mott insulating limit of Kitaevs model and show that the differential conductance has split peaks, as a consequence of resonant tunneling through the vison-hole composite. The peak splitting scales with the binding energy of vison-hole composite, which is comparable to the Majorana gap in CSL, well within the reach of experimental observation.
The exactly-solvable Kitaev model of two-dimensional honeycome magnet leads to a quantum spin liquid (QSL) characterized by Majorana fermions, relevant for fault-tolerant topological quantum computations. In the high-field paramagnetic state of $alpha $-RuCl$_3$, half-integer quantization of thermal Hall conductivity has been reported as a signature of Majorana fermions, but the bulk nature of this state remains elusive. Here, from high-resolution heat capacity measurements under in-plane field rotation, we find strongly angle-dependent low-energy excitations in the bulk of $alpha$-RuCl$_3$. The excitation gap has a sextuple node structure, and the gap amplitude increases with field, exactly as expected for itinerant Majorana fermions in the Kitaev model. Our thermodynamic results are fully linked with the transport quantization properties, providing the first demonstration of the bulk-edge correspondence in a Kitaev QSL.
